    Joey Logano crowned third Cup Series championship at Phoenix

    Two years after elevating his racing status to a new level by winning his second NASCAR Cup Series championship, Joey Logano elevated his status to another level and in an elite category of three-time champions in NASCAR’s premier series by claiming a dominant victory in the 2024 finale at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday, November 10.

    The two-time Cup Series champion from Middletown, Connecticut, led twice for 107 of 312-scheduled laps in a finale where he started on the front row alongside Martin Truex Jr. and grabbed the lead for the first time amid an early restart on Lap 10. Logano would claim the first stage victory before he dropped to fifth place in the running order after enduring a slow pit service from his No. 22 Team Penske Ford team during the stage break. Nonetheless, Logano spent the remainder of the finale racing towards the front while battling amongst his Championship 4 contenders William Byron, Tyler Reddick and teammate Ryan Blaney.

    Then during the finale’s final restart period with 54 laps remaining, Logano, who restarted in fifth place, gained two spots for a full lap before he made a bold three-wide pass beneath Byron and Christopher Bell to assume the lead in both the race and the championship battle. Despite having teammate Ryan Blaney inching up on him through every turn and straightaway while cutting away his advantage, Logano had enough horsepower to fend off Blaney to win the 2024 finale and claim his third Cup Series championship in seven seasons in the process.

    With on-track qualifying that determined the starting lineup on Saturday, November 9, Martin Truex Jr. notched his 25th and final Cup Series pole position as a full-time competitor with a pole-winning lap at 134.741 mph in 26.718 seconds. Joining him on the front row was Championship 4 contender Joey Logano, who clocked in his best qualifying lap at 134.690 mph in 26.728 seconds. Logano’s three Championship 4 rivals that included William Byron, Tyler Reddick and Ryan Blaney qualified eighth, 10th and 17th, respectively.

    Prior to the event, Jeb Burton, who was driving the No. 50 Team AmeriVet Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 entry, dropped to the rear of the field due to multiple inspection failures and was also forced to serve a stop-and-go penalty at the event’s start.

    When the green flag waved and the finale commenced, Martin Truex Jr. muscled his No. 19 Bass Pro Shops Toyota Camry XSE ahead with the lead through the frontstretch’s dogleg while Joey Logano and Ross Chastain dueled for second place in front of Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, Christopher Bell, Ty Gibbs and William Byron. Logano would fend off Chastain for the runner-up spot through the first two turns while Byron and Tyler Reddick were in the midst of a seven-car battle for fourth place through the backstretch. Amid the early battles within the field, Truex led the first lap.

    Shortly after, the finale’s first caution period flew when Ty Gibbs, who was racing in seventh place through Turns 3 and 4, went up the racetrack and scrubbed the frontstretch’s outside wall. Despite dropping to 12th place, Gibbs initially kept his No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota Camry XSE running straight before he broke loose through the dogleg and veered dead right into the frontstretch’s outside wall again, which knocked him out of contention amid the hard wreck.

    Following an extensive caution period, the finale restarted under green on the ninth lap. At the start, Truex and Logano dueled for the lead through the frontstretch’s dogleg and in front of the field that fanned out. Logano then started to gain the edge from the outside lane and he emerged slightly ahead through the backstretch before he cleared Truex entering Turn 3. As Logano led the 10th lap mark, a four-wide action for seventh place occurred between Kyle Larson, Tyler Reddick, Austin Cindric and Denny Hamlin while Ross Chastain retained third place ahead of Christopher Bell, Chase Elliott and William Byron. Reddick would prevail in the four-wide action for seventh place, which he assumed, while Hamlin was still dueling against Larson and Cindric for eighth place in front of rookie Carson Hocevar and Ryan Blaney.

    Through the first 20-scheduled laps, Logano was leading by more than a second over Truex while Bell, Byron and Elliott followed suit in the top five. Behind, Reddick retained sixth place ahead of Cindric while Blaney was up to eighth place ahead of Larson and Chastain. Logano would continue to lead the finale by more than a second over Truex by the Lap 30 mark while his title rivals Byron, Reddick and Blaney trailed from fourth, sixth and seventh, respectively, on the track.

    At the Lap 45 mark, Logano’s early advantage decreased to less than half a second over Truex, though the former was able to stabilize the lead while third-place Bell trailed by more than a second. By then, Byron retained fourth place and he trailed the lead by three seconds while Reddick was being challenged by Blaney for sixth place. Reddick would continue to fend off Blaney for sixth place on the track while Logano retained the lead over Truex by Lap 50.

    When the first stage period concluded on Lap 60, Logano, who is pursuing his third Cup Series championship, captured his third Cup stage victory of the 2024 season. Truex followed suit in second ahead of Bell, Byron and Elliott while Blaney, Redick, Hamlin, Larson and Cindric were scored in the top 10.

    Under the stage break, the lead lap field led by Logano pitted for a first round of service. Following the pit stops, Elliott exited pit road first and assumed the lead as he was followed by Bell, Byron, Blaney, Logano, Hamlin, Truex, Reddick, Larson and Chris Buescher. Amid the pit stops, Logano endured a slow pit service, which cost him four spots on pit road. In addition, Corey LaJoie was penalized for speeding on pit road.

    Not long after, the finale was placed in a red flag period for nearly six minutes after the Toyota Camry XSE pace car made a late left-hand swerve from the track to the pit road’s entrance and got sideways, which resulted in the pace car hitting the sand barrels while the leader Elliott barely avoided the pace car.

    Following the repairs made towards the pit road entrance, the second stage period started on Lap 71 as Elliott and Bell occupied the front row. At the start, the field fanned out through the frontstretch’s dogleg as Bell outdueled Elliott through the first two turns to muscle his No. 20 DeWalt/Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry XSE ahead through the backstretch. Bell proceeded to lead the next lap ahead of Elliott while title rivals Blaney and Byron dueled for third place in front of Logano, Hamlin, Truex and Reddick. By Lap 75, three of the four Championship 4 contenders that included Blaney, Byron and Logano were racing from third to fifth, respectively, on the track and Reddick was battling Larson for eighth place while Bell continued to lead.

    By Lap 85, Bell stabilized his advantage to eight-tenths of a second over Elliott’s No. 9 NAPA Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 while Blaney had third place to his possession over Byron. Behind, Logano trailed in fifth place and Reddick was mired in 10th place while Bell proceeded to stretch his lead to a second on Lap 90.

    Just past the Lap 100 mark, Bell continued to lead by more than a second over Elliott while third-place Blaney, who was leading the championship battle, trailed the race lead by two seconds. Behind Blaney was Byron, who was mired in between Blaney and Logano while Reddick continued to trail in 10th place.

    Fifteen laps later, a cycle of green flag pit stops commenced as Hamlin pitted his No. 11 FedEx Toyota Camry XSE. By then, Daniel Suarez had pitted while Noah Gragson, Justin Haley, rookie Zane Smith, Chase Briscoe, Kyle Busch, Corey LaJoie, Elliott, Byron and Logano would all pit behind Hamlin. Reddick and teammate Bubba Wallace would pit under green by Lap 117 as more names including Cindric, Chastain, John Hunter Nemechek, Austin Dillon and Blaney all followed suit.

    Towards the Lap 120 mark and with more names pitting, the top-six competitors led by Larson and including Hocevar, Alex Bowman, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Todd Gilliland and Daniel Hemric have yet to pit while Bell trailed by more than 25 seconds. As select names from the list, including Hocevar, Larson and Bowman, pitted, Bell cycled back into the lead on Lap 127. By then, he had Blaney trailing him by less than a second while Byron and Logano were mired within the top-eight mark.

    Nearing the Lap 140 mark, Bell extended his lead to more than two seconds over Blaney while third-place Byron trailed by nearly four seconds. Meanwhile, Logano, who trailed the lead by more than five seconds in fourth place on the track, received teammate Austin Cindric’s jackman due to his regular jackman feeling unwell and was taken to the infield care center. As Reddick continued to be mired as the lowest Championship 4 contender on the track in 10th place, Bell stabilized his lead to more than two seconds by Lap 140.

    At the Lap 150 mark, Bell retained the lead by within two seconds over Blaney. Behind, Byron retained third place as he trailed the lead by more than four seconds while fourth-place Logano followed suit as he started to challenge Byron for third place. Logano would then duel and overtake Byron’s No. 24 AXALTA Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 by Lap 152 while Bell’s lead decreased to more than a second over Blaney.

    By Lap 160, Blaney started to reel in on Bell, who was navigating through lapped traffic, for the lead as he trailed by within half a second. Then after tracking Bell over the next 17 laps, Blaney used the outside lane entering the frontstretch to duel with Bell for the lead. They remained dead even for the following lap before Blaney muscled his No. 12 Menards Ford Mustang Dark Horse ahead through the frontstretch as he assumed the lead in both the race and the championship battle. With Blaney fending off Bell, Logano started to close in from third place.

    Starting from Lap 180, Bell challenged Blaney for the lead through every corner and straightaway as they started to catch lapped traffic. Despite gaining the advantage through the turns from the inside lane, Bell would get fended off by Blaney as Logano joined the battle.

    When the second stage period concluded on Lap 185, Blaney, who made a daring three-wide pass in between the lapped competitors of Briscoe and LaJoie, fended off Bell and Logano to capture his fifth Cup stage victory of the 2024 season. Byron and Hamlin followed suit in the top five while Buescher, Larson, Elliott, Truex and Reddick were scored in the top 10.

    During the stage break, the lead lap field led by Blaney returned to pit road for another round of pit service. Following the pit stops, Bell exited pit road first and was followed by Blaney, Byron, Logano, Buescher, Larson, Elliott, Truex, Reddick and Hamlin.

    With 118 laps remaining, the final stage period commenced as Bell and Blaney occupied the front row. At the start, the field fanned out through the frontstretch’s dogleg as Bell cleared both Blaney and Logano to retain the lead through the first two turns. Behind, Reddick, who restarted in 10th place, used the outside lane to muscle his No. 45 Tame the Beast Toyota Camry XSE up alongside Buescher for sixth place. Then through the backstretch, Reddick made slight contact with Buescher as Buescher nearly turned Elliott, but all three kept their cars running straight as Reddick gained the sixth-place spot. He then overtook Larson for the following lap. By then, all four Championship 4 contenders were racing second through fifth, respectively, on the track as Bell retained the lead.

    With 110 laps remaining, Bell stretched his advantage to more than a second over Logano, who dueled and overtook teammate Blaney for the spot and the championship battle, while Byron and Reddick continued to follow suit in the top five on the track. Bell would stabilize his lead to seven-tenths of a second over Logano with 100 laps remaining while Blaney, Byron and Reddick continued to trail Logano in the title battle.

    Down to the final 85 laps of the finale, Bell continued to lead by more than a second over Logano, who had teammate Blaney pressuring him for the top spot in the championship battle. Behind, Byron trailed by three seconds while Reddick, who was overtaken by Larson, trailed in sixth place by more than seven seconds.

    Then with 78 laps remaining, a late cycle of green flag pit stops commenced as both Bell and Logano pitted their respective entries. A bevy of names including Bowman, Blaney, Reddick, Bubba Wallace, Buescher, Truex, Hocevar, Hamlin, Gragson, Harrison Burton, Suarez, Josh Berry, Zane Smith, Cindric, Chastain all pitted during the ensuing laps while Byron, who opted to remain on the track and stretch his fuel tank as far as possible, was leading.

    Then with 65 laps remaining, Byron pitted his No. 24 AXALTA Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 from the lead under green as teammates Larson and Elliott remained on the track and cycled to first and second, respectively. Not long after Byron exited pit road following his completed pit service, the caution flew with 63 laps remaining when Zane Smith spun and wrecked backward against the Turn 1 outside wall.

    During the caution period, some including Larson, Elliott, Bell, Blaney, Logano and Reddick pitted while Byron remained on the track as he inherited the lead.

    As the finale restarted under green with 54 laps remaining, Byron retained a narrow advantage over teammate Larson through the frontstretch’s dogleg before Bell gained a run through the first two turns and dueled beneath Byron through the backstretch. Both Byron and Bell would continue to duel through Turns 3 and 4 before Logano made it a three-wide battle for the lead through the frontstretch. Logano then used the frontstretch’s dogleg to motor his No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford Mustang Dark Horse into the lead entering Turn 1 while Larson challenged both teammate Byron and Bell for the runner-up spot. Byron would prevail in the three-car battle as he claimed the runner-up spot ahead of Bell while Blaney and Larson dueled for third place. Larson, Bell and Blaney then went three wide against one another for third place before Larson prevailed while Logano retained the lead with 50 laps remaining.

    With 40 laps remaining, Logano retained the lead in both the finale and the championship battle by one-and-a-half seconds over Byron while third-place Larson trailed by more than two seconds. Behind, Blaney occupied fourth place ahead of Bell and Reddick while Wallace, Elliott, Buescher and Gragson were in the top 10. Over the next 10 laps, Blaney would move up to third place on the track, where he trailed the lead by nearly three seconds, and Reddick would retain sixth place, where he trailed the lead by six-and-a-half seconds, while Logano continued to lead by less than two seconds over Byron with 30 laps remaining.

    Then with 23 laps remaining, Blaney, who was the fastest competitor on the track, dueled and overtook Byron for the runner-up spot, where he just managed to muscle his No. 12 Menards Ford Mustang Dark Horse ahead of Byron during the following lap. By then, teammate Logano continued to lead the championship battle by more than two seconds and he would retain the two-second advantage over a hard-charging Blaney with 20 laps remaining.

    Down to the final 15 laps of the finale, Logano’s advantage decreased to nine-tenths of a second over Blaney, who continued to shave off Logano’s lead through every corner and straightaway while Logano was trying to navigate his way through lapped traffic. By then, Byron trailed the lead by more than two seconds while Reddick trailed by eight seconds in sixth place on the track.

    Five laps later, Logano continued to lead by seven-tenths of a second over teammate Blaney, who had his Team Penske teammate within sight and reach, while third-place Byron trailed by four seconds. Over the next two laps, Blaney cut the deficit from Logano to half a second and three-tenths of a second before he got to Logano’s rear bumper through the backstretch with seven laps remaining.

    Then with six laps remaining, Blaney tried to make his move beneath teammate Logano through the first two turns, but Logano stood on the gas and retained the lead by within a tenth of a second through the backstretch. He then tried to make a move to the outside lane entering Turn 3, but Logano used the inside lane to retain the lead. For the following lap, Blaney lost a little ground to Logano as the latter led by two-tenths of a second. Logano’s advantage then slightly grew to three-tenths of a second over the next lap as teammate Blaney, who kept Logano within sight, was trying to regain his momentum to get close to Logano’s rear bumper.

    When the white flag waved and the final lap started, Logano, who was mired behind lapped traffic, remained as the leader by two-tenths of a second over teammate Blaney. Then as Blaney tried to gain a run to Logano through the frontstretch, he over-drove the first turn and nearly hit the outside wall. This allowed Logano to muscle ahead by nearly half a second through the backstretch. Blaney then stood on the gas and tried to get a run to Logano’s right rear, but it was not enough as Logano managed to cycle back ahead entering the frontstretch and claim the checkered flag by three-tenths of a second over Blaney to win both the finale and his third Cup Series championship.

    With his third championship in seven seasons, Logano became the 10th competitor overall to reach three titles in NASCAR’s premier series and the first to claim a third Cup championship since Tony Stewart achieved his in 2011. The championship was the fifth overall for Team Penske, the organization’s third in a row in recent seasons, and the third for veteran crew chief Paul Wolfe.

    By winning the finale, Logano notched his fourth Cup Series victory of the 2024 season, his third at Phoenix and the 36th of his career. The 2024 season marks the 10th time in 11 seasons that the current Playoff-elimination format featured the championship-winning competitor win the finale as Logano had previously accomplished both the finale victory and the title during the 2018 and 2022 seasons.

    “I love the Playoffs,” Logano said on the frontstretch on NBC. “I love it, man. What a race. What a Team Penske battle there at the end. [I] Had a good restart and was able to get in front of [Blaney]. He had a lot of long-run speed there. That was all I had there to hold him off. Man, three [championships]. That’s really special to get to [three titles]. What a team to fight through today. We threw a little bit of adversity throughout the race. [Crew chief] Paul Wolfe, I mean, what a crew chief do I have. I got the best team. I don’t know if I’m the best driver, but I got the best team. Together, we’re very well-rounded and can show up when it matters the most. We get a mentally tough team that can make things happen when it matters.”

    “[Spotter] Coleman Pressley, he was telling me where [Blaney] was,” Logano added. “He’s up there [in the spotter stands] telling me [the] best lanes to run and it’s a balance of putting dirty air on [Blaney] and running the fastest laps for my Ford. We just got a little too tight there at the end and I couldn’t really wrap the bottom as good as I wanted to. A one-two [finish] for Team Penske, three championships in a row since this Next Gen car. [I] Couldn’t be more proud of everyone at the shop that’s built these things. The race [for the championship] started in Vegas for us and the amount of work and effort that went into building this race car right here, the amount of time. I mean, I don’t think anyone works harder than us. We were up at six this morning going over stuff, but the guys just want it bad and I’m glad we delivered. It was looking iffy there for a minute, but that late-race restart [with 54 laps remaining] was really the difference maker. Gosh, I’m so proud of the team.”

    As Logano celebrated with his No. 22 Team Penske Ford team on the championship stage, teammate Blaney, Byron and Reddick were left disappointed on pit road as the trio fell short of achieving their championships.

    By finishing in second place both on the track and in the final standings, Blaney, who made his second consecutive appearance in the Championship 4 round, fell one spot short of becoming the first repeat champion since Jimmie Johnson won five consecutive titles from 2006-10. Nonetheless, Blaney, who capped off the season with three victories, extended his congratulations to teammate Logano for delivering another Cup Series championship to team owner Roger Penske.

    “Yeah, [I’m] just worn out,” Blaney said. “[I] Just couldn’t quite get there. I tried really hard to do so. Just [the last] restart didn’t really work out. [Logano] just got too far away from me and it took me a while to pass a couple guys. [I] Just could never get by Joey and just ran out of time, but congrats to him. Congrats to the No. 22 team and Pennzoil and Ford. They put together a great Playoffs and we’re happy. If we’re going to race somebody, I’m happy it was [Logano] for the championship and happy to be one, two for [owner] Roger [Penske]. Three in a row for Roger. Super amazing. On my side, I hate it for Menards,…everybody who really puts a lot of effort into our program. Just super fast. Just didn’t quite have enough there at the end. At least, a Penske car won it, but yeah, heck of a battle. [I] Hope the fans enjoyed it and yeah, hopefully, we come back even stronger next year.”

    William Byron, who also made his second consecutive Championship 4 appearance, capped off his seventh full-time campaign in NASCAR’s premier series highlighted with three victories and the 2024 Daytona 500 victory in third place both on the track and in the final standings. Tyler Reddick, who made his first Championship 4 appearance and notched a total of three victories and the 2024 Cup Series Regular Season Championship, could only climb his way up as high to sixth place in the final running order, which left him strapped in fourth place in the final standings.

    “We just needed a little bit more,” Byron said. “I felt like we gave it all we had and that’s something to be proud of. We just didn’t have enough to go fight with the Penske guys. [Crew chief] Rudy [Fugle] made a great call. I was really proud of that. That was cool to give us a shot at the front row and ultimately, it netted out better. Just not quite enough, but so proud of this team. It’s been a great year. To make the Championship 4 and win the [Daytona] 500 is awesome. I know what we need to work on and we’ll go at it next year.”

    “I think we definitely got our [Tame the] Beast Camry better throughout the day,” Reddick added. “[Blaney, Byron, and Logano] were able to pull away over time. It was a good year for us and everyone at 23XI [Racing]. To get to the Championship 4 and have a shot at [the title] was nice. We got to get a little bit better here at Phoenix. Obviously, we’re definitely motivated to do that knowing [the] championship’s sited here. Good year for us. Proud of the effort. It’s a lot to do. All the preparation, all the work that goes into this. It takes everybody. We were close. We were just not quite good enough, unfortunately.”

    Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell, both of whom were eliminated from the Playoffs a week ago at Martinsville Speedway, finished in the top five on the track at Phoenix. Bubba Wallace, Reddick’s teammate at 23XI Racing, settled in seventh place while Chase Elliott, Chris Buescher and Daniel Suarez completed the top 10 in the final running order.

    Notably, Martin Truex Jr. finished 17th in his 693rd and final start as a full-time Cup Series competitor while Carson Hocevar claimed the 2024 Rookie-of-the-Year title by finishing 18th. Chris Buescher, who ended up in ninth place at Phoenix, emerged as the highest non-Playoff contender in the standings in 17th place over Bubba Wallace, Ross Chastain and Kyle Busch, the latter of whom concluded a Cup Series season winless for the first time in his career.

    In addition, Stewart-Haas Racing capped off its 16-year journey in the Cup Series with all four of its competitors (Josh Berry, Chase Briscoe, Noah Gragson and Ryan Preece) finishing the finale, Harrison Burton finished 16th in his final event with Wood Brothers Racing, Daniel Hemric finished 23rd in his final event with Kaulig Racing and Michael McDowell ended up 31st in his final event with Front Row Motorsports.

    There were 16 lead changes for nine different leaders. The finale featured four cautions for 53 laps. In addition, 19 of 40 starters finished on the lead lap.

    The NASCAR Cup Series teams and competitors enter an off-season period before returning to action at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on February 2, 2025, for the annual Busch Light Clash. This event will be followed by the 67th annual running of the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway which is scheduled to occur on February 16, 2025, and will officially commence a new season of competition.

    Team Penske reveals 2022 Cup Series crew chief lineup

    Team Penske took to social media to reveal its crew chief lineup for the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season, featuring a new member to the roster.

    Jonathan Hassler, a former race engineer, will be serving as a full-time crew chief for Ryan Blaney and the No. 12 Ford Mustang team next season. Hassler currently serves as crew chief for the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford Mustang team driven by Matt DiBenedetto. In 15 races this season, Hassler, who replaced veteran Greg Erwin in June, has guided DiBenedetto and the Wood Brothers’ No. 21 team to one top-five result and five top-10 results.

    Hassler is set to replace Todd Gordon, the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series championship-winning crew chief who is set to retire following the 2021 season. Currently, Gordon has won three races with Blaney and the No. 12 team.

    Veteran Jeremy Bullins will be remaining as crew chief for Team Penske’s No. 2 Ford Mustang team set to be piloted by Austin Cindric, who will enter the 2022 season as a full-time Cup Series rookie candidate following four full-time seasons in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Cindric, the 2020 Xfinity champion who is currently in pursuit to defend his series title, is set to replace Brad Keselowski, the 2012 NASCAR Cup Series champion who is set to join Roush Fenway Racing as a driver and part-owner.

    Paul Wolfe, the 2012 NASCAR Cup Series championship-winning crew chief, will also retain his role as crew chief for Team Penske’s No. 22 Ford Mustang team and driver Joey Logano. Wolfe and Logano are currently in their second full-time season together, where they amassed four victories, 20 top-five results, 35 top-10 results and a third-place result in the 2020 Cup Series final standings.

    All three of Penske’s Cup operations are competing in the Round of 12 in the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs that is set to continue at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, October 3, at 2 p.m. ET on NBC.

    The 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season is scheduled to commence at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for The Clash on February 6 followed by the 64th annual running of the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on February 20.

    Let it be known that I hate restrictor plate racing.

    Between the XFINITY and Cup races, it was pile up after pile up. If you’re a fan, you might as well save the money, go to the County Fair and go see the demolition derby.

    If I am a car owner, I would really think hard about even entering my car into a race at Daytona and Talladega. You might as well consider that car a known loss and be surprised if the car survives. The investment for four restrictor plate races isn’t worth it.

    It was great to see Roger Penske in victory lane celebrating the 100th victory for Team Penske. The Captain has been the center of Indy Car racing for years and in the past 20 plus years, has been a force in NASCAR. He has his team poised to be in contention for years to come with younger drivers like Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano driving the Penske cars and Ryan Blaney driving for the Wood Brothers. The three drivers are lined up with three crew chiefs in Paul Wolfe, Todd Gordon and Jeremy Bullins which will add to team chemistry and continuity.

    Tony Stewart made it into the top-30 in points even though he wrecked out of Daytona. Look for Stewart to go hard for another win to solidify his spot in the Chase. I have the feeling Smoke will be a big factor at Indy. He was part of the tire test and would love to get his 50th Cup win at home.

    Kudos to Ryan Newman who called out NASCAR in the drivers meeting. I can see a fine coming, but his comments were on target. With the way the XFINITY race ended on Friday night, Newman calling into question how NASCAR officiated the race was on the money.

    Right now, there have been 11 winners in the Cup series. The five who are in on points right now are Chase Elliott, Austin Dillon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Ryan Newman and Ryan Blaney. After Richmond, unless someone like A.J. Allmendinger grabs a win at The Glen, the only driver in this group I don’t see in the Chase is Austin Dillon. The Slugger Labbe-led team hasn’t been consistent lately and I could see them dropping out of the Chase race and their spot taken by Jamie McMurray on points or Kyle Larson with a win.

    Kentucky will be interesting to see if it is a follow the leader like most re-paves turn out to be.

    Surprising and Not Surprising: Kobalt 400

    From the Team Penske pole repeat to the Most Interesting Man’s command to start the engines, here is what was surprising and not surprising from the 17th annual Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

    Surprising:  Boy, is he ever back…in so many surprising ways. With his crew chief Paul Wolfe back on top of the pit box after being out one race for the birth of his baby, driver Brad Keselowski sailed on past the out-of-gas Dale Earnhardt Jr. to make his way right back to Victory Lane.

    The driver of the No. 2 Miller Lite Ford also went back to back for the race weekend, becoming the first driver to sweep both the Nationwide and Cup races at Las Vegas in the same weekend since 2000 when Jeff Burton did it.

    Finally, Keselowski himself noted after crossing the finish line that he was back in the Chase, having scored the first win for Team Penske of the young 2014 season. He is also back in the point standings, just one point shy of the top spot.

    Not Surprising:  Dale Earnhardt, Jr. joined fellow competitor Martin Truex Jr. in trying to look on the bright side of life after finishes that did not quite live up to their expectations.

    “We knew we were a lap short,” Junior said after finishing second on fumes. “We tried to save as much as we could.”

    “We took a gamble and didn’t win the race, but it still worked in our favor to run second,” the driver of the No. 88 Mountain Dew Kickstart Chevrolet continued. “It sucks to lose like that, but we can’t let that be a negative. The only way to be productive is to be positive.”

    “We have got to look at the positives in today and keep working toward our goal of winning some more races.”

    “We were better than 14th, no question about that,” Martin Truex Jr. said. “We ran in the top-10 for most of the race but lost track position at the end.”

    “On the bright side this was our best performance as a team, much better than last week at Phoenix,” the driver of the No. 78 Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Chevrolet said. “We had good pit stops all day and I really like the gains we made this weekend.”

    Adding to their bright sides was the fact that Martin Truex Jr. made his 300th career start and Dale Jr. became only the second driver, next to the King, to begin a race year with three top-2 finishes in a row.

    Surprising:  Danica Patrick was the best of the Stewart Haas crew, finishing 21st.  Teammates Kurt Busch finished 26; Tony Stewart 33rd and Kevin Harvick 41st with a wheel hub issue putting him 30 laps down.

    “Obviously you always want more, but I’m happy with it, especially after what we’ve gone through the last two weeks,” Patrick said. “It’s a good day and gives us something to build on going to Bristol.”

    Driver and team owner summed up the surprisingly poor overall team performance with three words, “Something wasn’t right.” In fact, Stewart asked that his car at least not be touched after the race so it could return to North Carolina for diagnosis of its troubles.

    Not Surprising:  With a sense of urgency, given his wife was due with their first child at any minute, Paul Menard drove right up to the third spot in his No. 27 Quaker State/Menards Chevrolet. And not surprisingly given his record there, this ended up as Menard’s third top-10 finish in eight races in SinCity.

    “It’s big for sure,” Menard said. “This Quaker State/Menards Chevy was hauling ass on long runs. Had a lot of those today and it kind of played in our favor.”

    “And now I want to get home as soon as possible.”

    Surprising:  For the first time back on the race track since announcing his departure from full-time racing and his soon-to-be broadcast career and for his first time behind the wheel of a Toyota Camry, Jeff Burton had a surprisingly good run.

    In fact, the driver of the No. 66 Let’s Go Places Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing brought it home top-20, finishing in the 17th spot.

    “That was a lot of fun,” Burton said. “That was a good day for the No. 66 guys.  Chad (Walter, crew chief) and the guys were a pleasure to work with this weekend.”

    Not Surprising:  While Carl Edwards was pleased with his top-5 finish in his No. 99 Aflac Ford, he could not help but mourn the passing of William Clay Ford, Sr., the grandson of Henry Ford.

    “We’re all thinking of the Ford family,” Edwards said. “For Brad in a Ford to win both of those races (Nationwide and Cup), I think it says a lot.”

    NASCAR echoed Edwards’ sentiments with Brian France, NASCAR Chairman and CEO, issuing these words, “He will be remembered as a man of style, for both the automobiles he built and the life he led. He was a giant….who forever will be missed.”

    Surprising:  With the new Chase system focusing on race wins, it was surprising to hear at least one driver talk about a good points day after the Kobalt 400.

    “It was a good effort for the team and it was a good points day,” Ryan Newman said after finishing seventh in his No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet. “If we keep running like that, we’ll put it in the top five and if we do that we’ll win.”

    Not Surprising:   That Austin Dillon is just good so it was not surprising that he not only had a good finish in 16th, the highest finishing rookie, but as a result, he now sits as the highest rookie in the point standings. In fact, Austin Dillon is 13th in the point standings, ahead of the likes of Kevin Harvick, Kasey Kahne, Clint Bowyer, Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch.

    Surprising:  While Kyle Busch is usually a favorite with the kids due to the M&Ms candy on his car, he felt more like a kid’s toy, in this case a yoyo, after a grueling day in his home town.

    “We had a really up and down day with our M&M’s Peanut Camry,” Busch said. “We started off getting blocked in the pits and had to come from the back.”

    “The car was too loose on the first run and we tightened it up and it was really fast for a while,” Busch continued. “But, we kept adjusting on it to try and help the tight in the center of the corner and it was just getting looser and looser, especially on the last run.  Just disappointing when we looked like we had a good car earlier in the race.”

    Not Surprising:  With three top-ten finishes to his name, Jeff Gordon is one happy camper so far this season. And to finish top-ten at Las Vegas, admittedly one of his struggles tracks, he was almost giddy.

    “I knew today was going to be one of the most challenging races that we were going to have, possibly all year long,” Gordon said. “And so, I feel like this team did an incredible job. I think we were much better than ninth, but at the same time, this I think is one of my worst tracks right now.”

    “We’re off to a fantastic start. We’re very motivated by that. We’re excited.”

    Surprising and Not Surprising: The Profit on CNBC 500

    With the first knock out qualifying of the season and special guests like AJ Foyt celebrating the 50th anniversary of Phoenix International Speedway, here is what else was surprising and not surprising from The Profit on CNBC 500 presented by Small Business Fueling America.

    Surprising:  While Kevin Harvick may be known as the ‘Closer’ and ‘Freaky Fast’, he can now add a surprising new moniker, that of ‘Leader’.

    Harvick led more than 200 laps for the fourth time in the Cup Series, as well as leading a race-high 224 laps.

    The driver of the No. 4 Jimmy Johns Chevrolet also took the lead from six-time champ Jimmie Johnson as the winningest driver at Phoenix International Raceway with five victories.

    Finally, Harvick became the leader of the pack at Stewart-Haas Racing, grabbing the team’s first win, as well as his first win with his new team.

    “This just solidifies so many things and so many decisions,” Harvick said after the race. “What a race car.”

    Not Surprising:  With PIR being a one-miler, it was not surprising that there was at least one short-track temper tantrum. And this time, that honor went to Danica Patrick, who was more than annoyed with Justin Allgaier.

    “That damn 51 was driving like a complete jack**s out there,” Patrick said. “I’m not at all surprised we wrecked.”

    Patrick went on to spin out again as a result of the damage inflicted in the incident with Allgaier’s car, finishing 36th.  Since she also crashed out in the Daytona 500, she now sits 41st in owner points for the 2014 season, potentially endangering her chances in making races if she continues on that path.

    Surprising:  In spite of significant and integral parts of their team missing, with Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s spotter TJ Majors out for medical reasons and Brad Keselowski’s crew chief Paul Wolfe out for the birth of his child, both drivers did their missing compadres proud.

    Dale Junior finished second in his No. 88 National Guard Chevrolet and Brad Keselowski finished right behind him in third in his No. 2 Alliance Truck Parts Ford. This was Earnhardt Jr.’s 11th top-10 finish and Keselowski’s fourth top-10 finish at Phoenix International Raceway.

    “Yeah we had a great car,” Junior said. “We leaned on our teammates and got the car a lot better.  Steve (Letarte) and those guys just keep getting better and better.  These cars I’m driving I think are the best in the garage.”

    “That was everything we could do to get up there and get third,’ Keselowski said. “We did the best we could and that was really all we had.”

    Both drivers texted and tweeted their respective missing team members before and after the race, keeping them as connected as possible, as well as celebrating their good finishes together.

    Not Surprising:  With Team Penske being stout in qualifying it was no surprise that Joey Logano also had a good finish in his No. 22 Shell Pennzoil Ford, taking the checkered flag in the fourth spot. In addition, Logano also had the quote of the race day.

    “It was fun out there,” Logano said. “I had a really good Shell Pennzoil Ford but that 4 car was just so fast.”

    “I was joking on the radio that on the back bumper of that car it says freaky fast and they weren’t lying when they put that on there.”

    Surprising:  Kasey Kahne, who had surprisingly been the lone Hendrick Motorsports struggler, fought off an ill handling car to catch up to his teammates, finishing 11th.

    “The guys battled hard today,” Kahne tweeted after the race. “11th was good for us after all that. On to Vegas!”

    HMS drivers Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson also had good runs, finishing fifth and sixth respectively.

    Not Surprising:  Phoenix International Raceway, which requires some finesse and experience, was not quite so kind to the rookies in the field. In fact, the highest finishing rookie was Kyle Larson in the 20th position.

    Austin Dillon finished 24th; Cole Whitt 27th; Justin Allgaier 30th; Michael Annett 34th; Ryan Truex 35th; Alex Bowman 41st and Parker Kligerman 42nd.

    Surprising:  Casey Mears, behind the wheel of the No. 13 Geico Chevrolet had another surprisingly good run finishing top-15. Mears had a great run in the Daytona 500, taking the checkered flag in the tenth spot.

    So, after leaving Phoenix, albeit only the second race of the season, Mears now sits 11th in the point standings, having one of his best starts to the year.

    Not Surprising:   Kurt Busch, who had been a student at the University of Arizona, returned to the state to learn one tough lesson at PIR, blowing an engine to finish 39th in the No. 41 Haas Automation Chevrolet.

    “That was another disappointing finish for the No. 41 team,” Busch said. “We had a good Haas Automation Chevrolet early on and ran in the top-10 for more than 200 laps but we dropped a cylinder late in the race and couldn’t do anything to fix it.”

    “We learned some things today,” Busch continued. “The school of hard knocks happens out on the road and in life.”

    Surprising:  While Kurt Busch was fighting his own engine demons, Brian Vickers was facing some surprising challenges of his own, turning his No. 55 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota into a nightmare.

    “The second run we were trying to make an adjustment and the left rear jack screw broke so we didn’t get our adjustment,” Vickers said. “I think we even went the wrong way and that killed us — we lost track position and went a lap down.”

    Vickers soldiered on to finish the race in the 25th position.

    Not Surprising:  Ryan Newman served as leader of the Richard Childress Racing team, finishing seventh in his No. 31 Quicken Loans Chevrolet.

    “The guys did a good job in the pits,” Newman said. “We caught a good break with the debris caution but that happens. I’m sure we’ll get the opposite at some point this year, too.”

    The next event on the Sprint Cup schedule is the Kobalt 400 on Sunday, March 9th at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The race starts at 3 p.m. EDT, with live coverage provided by FOX beginning with its prerace show at 2 p.m.

    Matty’s Picks 2013 – Race 31 Bank of America 500 – Charlotte Motor Speedway – October 12, 2013

    The drivers of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series do not have to travel much further than their back yards to get to the track this week. A hometown race this week, and the only night race of the 2013 Chase for The Sprint Cup for the vast majority of teams this week. There have been 109 races at Charlotte Motor Speedway, everyone knows the history that has been made at the track, so I’ll spare the history for some statistics this week.

    Jimmie Johnson leads the series with the most Chase race wins at Charlotte Motor Speedway with three, but none since his last win at Charlotte in October of 2009. The deepest in the field any eventual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion has finished at the Chase race at Charlotte Motor Speedway was 25th all the way back in 2005 when Tony Stewart won his second NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship, his first with the Chase setup. All but one of the nine Chase races at Charlotte have been won by Chase drivers, and the second starting position has produced more race winners than any other starting position with 17 eventual race winners starting outside the front row. So with these stats so far, we’ve not eliminated any potential race winners.

    The one statistic very important to this week’s picks comes in the form of a particular manufacturer’s recent struggles at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Just one Ford driver (who is driving a Toyota now) has won a race at Charlotte in the last 22 Charlotte races, and that was Matt Kenseth in the 2011 Bank of America 500. So one driver in 11 years has been able to put Ford in Victory Lane, which is something to look at this week if you’re making fantasy picks.

    The only night race of the 2013 Chase for the Sprint Cup, so enjoy not swapping back and forth between your NFL game and NASCAR this week…

    Kansas Recap

    Not a great week for me last week at Kansas Speedway as I went with the points leader, Matt Kenseth as my winner pick because he was undefeated on the low-banked intermediate tracks this season. He had won at Las Vegas in March, Kansas in April, Kentucky in June, and Chicago in September to open the 2013 Chase. Kenseth’s streak would end last week at Kansas has he was rather quiet for the majority of the race….but extended his streak of 5 straight races where he has led a lap. Kenseth finished 11th, his first finish outside the top 10 in over a month.

    My Dark Horse was exactly that, a shot in the dark especially this season. The dark horse aspect was erased when Brad Keselowski qualified fourth and got to the front for 52 laps last week in Kansas. Crew Chief Paul Wolfe’s gamble with fuel would not pan out as the Miller Lite Ford ran out of fuel on lap 224, the gamble cost Keselowski two laps to the leader which he was able to make up one, but would finish 17th when the checkered flag flew.

    Charlotte Picks

    Winner Pick
    There are many folks looking at the No.18 team this week, for one he has won two races on the high banked intermediate tracks this season, in dominating fashion at Texas in April and most recently at Atlanta on Labor Day weekend. The second reason why Rowdy Busch is circled on may fantasy rosters this week is the thought that he is due for a win at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Cup Series. Rewind to Memorial Day weekend this season…Kyle Busch was leading the Coca-Cola 600, in the middle of lap traffic when Fox Sports’ SkyCam over the frontstretch at Charlotte Motor Speedway came crashing to the race surface immediately in front of the No.18 car. The impact of the SkyCam resulted in radiator issues and an engine failure for Kyle who was positioned for his first ever Charlotte career win.

    The loop statistics are great for a guy who has never won a race…he’s in the top three in all but one of the loop categories. The only one he is not inside the top three is Green Flag Passes, but Kyle has also qualified well over the years in North Carolina with a couple poles in the points races and an average start of 11.5. The practice sessions today and his win in the NASCAR Nationwide Series on Friday at Charlotte have added to my case for Kyle Busch on Saturday night. I am seeing a win out of this team on Saturday night and them jumping back into the Championship picture when we head to Talladega next week.

    Dark Horse Pick
    Martin Truex Jr. is going to be my longer play this week and here is why…Before Kansas last week and the race at Chicagoland to open the Chase, you had to go back all the way to Las Vegas back in March of 2012 for Truex’s last finish outside the top 15 on any of these intermediate track races. The stretch of 15-straight top 15 finishes is enhanced by the fact that he had two finishes outside the top 10 in the same stretch, both of which coming in the 2012 season.

    Keep in mind Truex led 142 laps and finished 2nd at Texas back in April, also a 1.5-mile night race. Truex qualified 17th on Thursday, but went out for his qualifying run relatively early to some of the other drivers with similar practice speeds. On Friday, Truex was 3rd fastest in the first practice session and 5th in Happy Hour Friday evening, adding to the consistency we’ve seen all season from Truex on these intermediate tracks. He would like nothing more than to win one of these Chase races, so I’m throwing out the couple poor finishes in a row at Chicago and Kansas and going with Truex as a solid longer play this week.

    Surprising and Not Surprising: FedEx 400 Benefiting Autism Speaks

    With the temperatures soaring and the ‘monster’ on the prowl, here is what was surprising and not surprising from the 44th annual FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks at Dover International Speedway.

    Surprising:  With even the drivers predicting that the ‘usual suspects’ would run well at Dover, there was a most surprising and surprised driver in Victory Lane instead.

    “If somebody would have told me it was going to be this way, I would have told them they were crazy,” race winner Tony Stewart declared in Victory Lane. “This was not a car that could win the race.”

    Stewart had not won a race at the Monster Mile since 2000 and has struggled for the most part at the track. This was not only Smoke’s first win of the season but, also surprisingly, his first top-10 finish in 2013.

    “Our guys at the shop have been digging, “ the driver of the No. 14 Code 3 Associates/Mobil 1 Chevrolet said of his team. “That is what carries you to days like today at the end of the day.”

    Not Surprising:  Restart gamesmanship, which has been discussed all season long this year, played a major factor as well at the Monster Mile. This time the games played out between then race leader Juan Pablo Montoya and Jimmie Johnson, the latter of whom was undoubtedly the strongest car on the track.

    Late in the race, NASCAR deemed that Johnson jumped the restart and black flagged him, forcing him to serve a pass through penalty. Johnson ended the race in the 17th position while Montoya finished second after the late pass on the high side by race winner Stewart.

    “Jimmie (Johnson) was laying off about nearly a car length from me, and I knew he was trying to jump the restart,” the driver of the No. 42 Energizer Chevrolet said. “When we got to the line, I think he wanted to time it and he timed it too well.”

    “He wanted to get the jump on me and he just jumped it too much,” Montoya continued. “I would have tried to have done the same.”

    “It’s one of those deals that when you time it too good, it actually hurts you.”

    Johnson of course had a different take on the restart gamesmanship, blaming Montoya instead.

    “I was at half throttle,” Johnson said. “At some point you have to go.”

    “I’m waiting for Montoya and he never comes,” Johnson continued. “Chad (Knaus, crew chief) told me to take off and not worry about it.”

    “Not a good way to lose the race,” Johnson said. “We had the strongest car.”

    Surprising:  Jeff Gordon, this week driving the No. 24 AARP Credit Cards from Chase Chevrolet, was surprisingly the best finisher amongst the Hendrick Motorsports group.

    Gordon finished third, while teammates Dale Earnhardt, Jr. finished tenth, Jimmie Johnson finished 17th and Kasey Kahne took the checkered flag in 23rd after spinning out on lap 318.

    “Yeah it was a fantastic finish for us,” Gordon said. “We battled hard all day long.”

    “Today was a great race for us, just because we were sitting there 12th, 13th, 14th, and we stayed out and all of a sudden, here we are third.”

    “So that’s a great lesson for us to learn when we go to other tracks as well.”

    This was Gordon’s 23rd top-10 finish in 41 races at Dover International Speedway. The third place finish was also critical to Gordon, who jumped from fifteenth to eleventh in the point standings.

    Not Surprising:  Another parts failure played a role in Kyle Busch’s failure to score the finish that he wanted. In spite of that, however, he did end the race in the top—five, finishing fourth.

    “We must have broken a right front bump stop or something,” Busch said. “Just past halfway, that’s when it took a dump on us.”

    “I hate it,” Busch continued. “It’s unfortunate we weren’t able to capitalize on getting a win.”

    Surprising:  Kyle Busch was not the only Toyota driver to experience mechanical failures as both Matt Kenseth and Martin Truex Jr. surprisingly suffered blown engines.

    “Something let go in the motor,” Truex Jr. said. “Just dropped a cylinder and started smoking all at once.”

    “We were one or two adjustments away there from having something for them,” the driver of the No. 56 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota said. “Damn, I wish we could have made it to the end.”

    “Something broke in our engine too,” Kenseth said. “Pretty disappointing.”

    “Something went wrong with a part,” the driver of the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota said. “There’s nothing I can do about it.”

    Not Surprising:   Michael Waltrip Racing, with the exception of Martin Truex, Jr., showcased their survival skills at the Monster Mile , with Clint Bowyer and Mark Martin finishing sixth and ninth respectively.

    “We got a pretty decent finish but we just didn’t run very good all weekend long,” Bowyer said. “Definitely need to go back and do our homework and figure some things out for our 5-Hour Energy Toyota.”

    “It was a really great effort by our team,” Martin said. “Our Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota had more potential at the end than we were able to show.”

    “We’re making progress.”

    Surprising:  Denny Hamlin, who described himself as being on a mission to win and who snagged the coveted pole position, had a surprisingly bad day at Dover.

    On lap 378, Hamlin blew a tire and hit the wall, bringing out the seventh caution of the day. The driver of the No. 11 FedEx Freight/Autism Speaks Toyota finished 34th and fell to 26th in the point standings.

    Not Surprising:  With the temperature being so high, it was no surprise that tempers ran a little hot as well. Ryan Newman, manhandling his No. 39 Haas Automation Chevrolet without power steering, had his own temper flare-up while trying to pass David Gilliland, behind the wheel of the No. 38 Long John Silver’s Ford.

    And when the two drivers touched, they both went spinning and crashing hard.

    “We just got wrecked,” Gilliland said. “It is a shame.”

    “Unfortunately someone lost their patience a little bit,” Gilliland continued. “It is too bad but that is just the way it goes I guess.”

    Newman declined comment after the incident.

    Surprising:  Brad Keselowski was the highest finishing Ford, bringing his Blue Deuce to the checkered flag in the fifth position. He also had his crew chief Paul Wolfe back atop the war wagon after serving his penalties and suspension.

    “We drove hard all day, we just didn’t have the speed needed to go win the race,” Keselowski said. “ But we had the speed we needed to have a solid day.”

    “The guys did a great job executing today,” Keselowski said. “We wanted to win too so we will keep working to find a little more speed and get up there.”

    Unfortunately, Keselowski’s good run was marred by NASCAR’s announcement that his car did not pass post-race inspection as its front was too low. Penalties were just announced and include a fine of $25,000 for crew chief Wolfe and the continuation of his probation until year-end.

    The team has also been docked six driver points and six car owner points.

    Not Surprising:  Joey Logano, who won the Nationwide race the day before, exceeded his own expectations, battling back from a flat tire and using the lucky dog position to finally finish the race in the seventh position.

    “We fought all day basically trying to get a lucky dog after that flat tire,” Logano said. “We would get one back and then go down two and then get one back.”

    “This weekend I thought we were going to finish about 15 laps down,” Logano continued. “We weren’t any good in practice and Todd (Gordon, crew chief) and all the guys did a good job making it better for me.”

    “By the end it was a top-five car and we just ran out of time,” Logano said. “ I feel like that we could have finished in the top-five but considering where we were, we will take that all day.”

    Tony Stewart Outsmoked Juan Pablo Montoya for Monster Mile Win

    Tony Stewart defied all odds, coming from a 22nd starting position at the Monster Mile, to battle Juan Pablo Montoya to win the 44th Annual FedEx benefiting Autism Speaks race. This was Smoke’s first victory of the season and only his third top-10 finish in 2013.

    “This was not a car that could have won the race,” Stewart said. “Just great pit strategy at the end.”

    “Steve Addington (crew chief) made a great call there that last caution and gave us the opportunity to race for it up there.”

    “Just really proud of the Code 3 Associates Chevy,” Stewart continued. “Code 3 has done such an awesome job of getting everybody in Oklahoma back on their feet.”

    “I couldn’t think of a better wayto celebrate their work.”

    Stewart acknowledged that this has been a tough season, however, the win will certainly prove that the team is headed in the right direction, thanks to their perseverance.

    “Our guys at our shop have been digging,” Smoke said. “None of these guys get down.”

    “That is what carries you to days like today at the end of the day.”

    Juan Pablo Montoya, finishing second in the No. 42 Energizer Chevrolet for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, benefitted from a black flag of the strongest car in the race when NASCAR ruled on lap 381 that Jimmie Johnson jumped the restart. The penalty sent Johnson through the pits for a pass through penalty and Montoya to the race lead.

    Montoya, however, could not hold off Tony Stewart and had to settle for the runner up race finish instead. And he admitted that it was a struggle in spite of testing earlier at the Monster Mile.

    “Our car was OK,” Juan Pablo said in the media center after the race. “We came here and did a test before the race.”

    “It was a lot cooler, so when we unloaded we had to do quite a bit of work on the car,” Montoya continued. “We struggled with loose all day.”

    “We were really, really loose and the longer we would run, the looser we would get,” Montoya said. “It was a bit of a hit and miss.”

    “On one of the runs under green, we decided to make a couple changes on the car and it just came to life,” Montoya continued. “It came to life at the right time.”

    “It was a shame to lose but I just couldn’t hold Tony off.”

    While Juan Pablo Montoya thought that Johnson was trying to time the restart just right, he admitted that he would have done the exact same thing given the circumstances.

    “Jimmie was letting off and I knew he was trying to jump the start,” Montoya said. “And I backed up a little bit for him and when we got to the line, he wanted to time it and he timed it too well.”

    “He wanted to get the jump on me and he just jumped it too much,” JPM continued. “I would have tried to do the same thing.”

    Runner up Montoya also traded paint with Kurt Busch, in the No. 78 Furniture Row/Sealy Chevrolet, who finished 12th.

    “It’s weird, I got to his bumper – I don’t think I touched him, got him loose, got into turn three and he gave me a tap and I’m like, I don’t think I hit you,” Montoya said. “But it’s OK.”

    “It’s racing hard.”

    Montoya also credited his good finish to the growing chemistry with his crew chief Chris Heroy. But that relationship has been a struggle as they found ways to work together to get the car to Montoya’s liking.

    “When we started, we sucked and it was hard,” Montoya said. “He had a certain mentality as to how the car should be set up.”

    “He didn’t get that if he set it up that way, I couldn’t drive it,” Montoya continued. “You have to give me something that I can drive and be comfortable.”

    “It took a little time but now we’re clicking real well,” Montoya said. “And we’ve been getting good results every week.”

    Although the car was a handful, Montoya was pleased with the race finish and acknowledged that it bodes well for their continuing success.

    “It was a hell of a finish,” Montoya said. “It’s been awhile since we finished this good.”

    “We’ve had near misses but I think the wins are coming.”Montoya continued. “I’ve said this before, you’ve got to get top-5s and top-10s to be able to add wins.”

    “Today we gave ourselves a good chance but the car was a little too much of a handful there at the end,” Montoya said. “We tried.”

    This was Montoya’s third top-10 finish in 13 races at Dover and his third top-10 finish of the season.

    Jeff Gordon, driving the No. 24 AARP Credit Cards from Chase Chevrolet, finished a strong third, ahead of all of his other Hendrick Motorsports teammates. This was Gordon’s 23rd top-10 finish at Dover.

    “Yeah it was a fantastic finish for us,” Gordon said. “We battled hard all day long, hovering 13th, 14th, I think we got to maybe 10th at one time.”

    “I knew that clean air was making a huge difference,” Gordon continued. “So, we were fortunate there where we only had a few laps on the tires and we decided to stay out.”

    Gordon acknowledged that this run was exactly what he was hoping for to turn his season around.

    “It’s certainly a great feeling,” Gordon said. “We just have to fight.”

    “We fought hard today, very hard and this is a tough place,” Gordon continued. “It was not an easy race but this team never gave up.”

    Gordon jumped  four spots in the point standings, from 15th to 11th, now within  striking distance of Chase contention.

    Kyle Busch, driving the No. 18 M&M’s Toyota Camry, finished in the fourth position, in spite of yet again some sort of parts failure.

    “We must have broken a right front bump stop or something,” Busch said. “Just another parts failure for us.”

    “It’s unfortunate we weren’t able to capitalize on getting a win today,” Busch continued. “I felt like we had something for the 48 but it didn’t come down to having to race the 48.”

    “Just seems to be our two years continuing today.”

    Brad Keselowski in the Blue Deuce, with his crew chief Paul Wolfe back at his side, finished in the fifth position. But the reigning champ was most complimentary of past champ Stewart after the race.

    “We drove hard all day but didn’t have the speed to win the race,” Keselowski said. “It’s good to see Tony win.”

    “That was a good race,” Keselowski said. “I was having fun watching him.”

    After the race, however, NASCAR reported that Keselowski’s No. 2 was found to be too low in the front in post-race inspection, with potential penalties to be announced later in the week.

    Certainly, one of the most dramatic moments of the race was the black flag of Jimmie Johnson, who had worked his way through the pack and looked to be the car to beat. Understandably, Johnson  saw the restart just a bit differently fromJuan Pablo Montoya.

    “No, I was half throttle,” Johnson said of the restart. “At some point you have to go.”

    “I’m waiting for him and he never comes,” Johnson said of Montoya. “Chad (Knaus, crew chief) told me to take off and not worry about it.”

    “Not a good way to lose the race,” Johnson lamented. “We had the strongest car.”

    There were also several engine issues in the race as well, including Matt Kenseth and Martin Truex Jr., both with Toyota engines.

    “Something let go in the motor,” Truex said. “Just dropped a cylinder and started smoking all at once.”

    “Same thing happened to the 20 it looked like,” Truex continued. “Pretty disappointing.”

    Truex Jr. finished 38th while Kenseth finished 40th.

    “Something broke in the engine,” Kenseth said, sounding eerily similar to Truex’s report. “You have to finish these things.”

    “Man, it’s disappointing.”

    The other dramatic moment in the race occurred between Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 Haas Automation Chevrolet, and David Gilliland, driver of the No. 38 Long John Silver’s Ford, who traded paint and then wrecked each other.

    “We just got wrecked,” Gilliland said. “It is a shame.”

    “We had a fast race car and a great run going and unfortunately someone lost their patience a little bit and we got wrecked.”

    “It is too bad but that is just the way it goes I guess.”

    Ryan Newman declined to comment after the incident.

    Clint Bowyer, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. rounded out the top ten finishers in the FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks at Dover International Speedway.

    The Monster Mile is up next this season, and if Sunday’s race is anything like the previous twelve races this season, we’re in for a show. Sunday’s FedEx 400 Benefiting Autism Speaks also marks the midway point of the regular season for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and just one year ago, nine of the top-10 drivers in the points standings leaving this June race at The Monster Mile ended up in the field of twelve in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

    On the horizon this week at Dover, five-time champ Jimmie Johnson looks to unseat legends Bobby Allison and Richard Petty at the top of the all-time win list at Dover International Speedway. He is the defending race winner and scored his seventh win at the Monster Mile in Delaware’s capital city.

    Sunday also marks the return of key personnel from the Penske camp at a time when defending series champ, Brad Kesolowski needs them the most.

    Last Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 marked Bad Brad’s first DNF since the 2012 Daytona 500, and sitting tenth in points with not a win to his name yet in 2013, this team needs to get moving to punch their ticket to the big dance at the end of the year. Crew chief Paul Wolfe and other members of Penske Racing will make their return to the pit box this weekend, following their suspension stemming from the April 13th race at Texas. It’s been only two points races since Wolfe was ousted by NASCAR, but in those two races, Kesolowski finished 32nd at Darlington and 36th last week at Charlotte. There couldn’t be a better time for Wolfe’s return and Brad has done his part so far this weekend for a solid finish, qualifying the Blue Deuce in 8th for tomorrow’s FedEx 400 Benefiting Autism Speaks.

    I was off last week and with nothing to recap, we’ll roll on to my pick’s for Dover.

    Winner Pick
    Had I written this column on Wednesday, it would have been tough to pass up Jimmie Johnson’s immaculate record at The Monster Mile, but it’s Saturday and Johnson hasn’t won a race at Dover after starting outside the top-10 since completing the season-sweep at Dover in the fall race in 2002. Jimmie is not my pick this week.

    There is no other driver hotter than Matt Kenseth right now, and as a two-time Dover winner, there is nothing to shake a stick at about this team this weekend. He’s notched eight top-5 finishes in eight of his last ten starts at The Monster Mile, his win in 2011 included in that number. Considering the top four starting spots for tomorrow’s FedEx 400 Benefiting Autism Speaks are Toyotas, I think I’ve gone with the right manufacturer for the win tomorrow. Kenseth is also racing for Joe Gibbs Racing in today’s NASCAR Nationwide Series’ 5-Hour Energy 200, gaining valuable seat time at a track as difficult as any to master. This guy is hot and he’s returning to a place he likes and has won before.

    Dark Horse Pick

    I’m not sure if a guy with “Concrete Carl” as one of his many nicknames can be considered a Dark Horse, but he’s flown under the radar all season, despite sitting second in points. The current odds show Carl at 12 to 1, but I think those are fantastic odds given the fact he boasts the series’ best average finish (8.3) at Dover. He has been one of the best on these surfaces between the NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Sprint Cup series, and in the fall, Edwards finished fifth despite the horrific 2012 season he was having. Concrete Carl is a contender this week and he will roll off 18th tomorrow at The Monster Mile.

    Penske Crew Chiefs Paul Wolfe and Todd Gordon Back on Track

    Both Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano have their crew chiefs back, Paul Wolfe and Todd Gordon respectively. And all impacted by the Penske suspension could not be happier to be back on track.

    “For me, personally it was tough,” Wolfe, crew chief of the No. 2 Miller Lite for Penske Racing said. “It was tougher to deal with then what I thought it would be.”

    The three week suspension was also tough for Todd Gordon, crew chief for the No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford.

    “It was difficult,” Gordon said. “It was tough to sit there and not see it.”

    “There was definitely a disconnect,” Gordon continued. “That is why NASCAR implements the penalties they do, to make sure there is a penalty to it.”

    Both crew chiefs described the biggest challenge as being unable to use their sensory input to help the cars and drivers, in addition to all the other data collected.

    “I am a hands on kind of guy and for me to be able to watch the car in practice and see how it runs around other cars is important for me,” Wolfe said. “Visually, to see that and to make decisions on what changes to make is important.”

    “It obviously was not the same.”

    Gordon echoed Wolfe’s sentiments, describing how important physically being at the track really is for a crew chief.

    “I would say the biggest thing is being able to actually touch it, feel it, smell it and see it,” Gordon said. “All the sensory stuff you don’t get from pictures and radios as you are listening to scanners and things like that.”

    “You can’t see the splitter and how hard you are wearing on it and what the wear pattern looks like,” Gordon continued. “You can’t see tires.”

    “There is so much of that information that I have lost the last three weeks that it will be good to be back and get that info.”

    The Penske teams, however, have had very different experiences at track without their crew chiefs. The Blue Deuce has struggled without crew chief Wolfe while Logano and company have done quite well even with Gordon away from the top of the box.

    “Absolutely, it has been hard to watch the team struggle,” Wolfe said. “We have lost a lot of points over the last month and it started a little earlier than before I was gone.”

    “We had some issues at Richmond with some engine issues and lost points there,” Wolfe continued. “At Darlington, we felt like we had a competitive car but we had issues there with a loose wheel and getting caught up in a wreck.”

    Gordon, on the other hand, has witnessed his team perform well in spite of the suspension.

    “I think it is just a testament that everybody here steps up when they need to,” Gordon said. “It has gone well.”

    “We had good plans going into the race weekends and we implemented them well.”

    The two crew chiefs also got to play armchair quarterbacks and reflect on what they would have been differently if they had been at the track and in charge.

    “I can’t say there was anything I would have done different,” Wolfe said. “Obviously I guided a lot of the changes and what we did.”

    “Maybe I would have made different decision if I was there than what I did from being afar,” Wolfe continued. “Overall, it wasn’t like these guys went on their own agenda and did things that we wouldn’t have done.”

    “It was guided by me.”

    “Obviously you are still connected,” Gordon said. “You are still involved with how the race call goes and everything else.”

    “There were a couple things that I look back and say I wish I had more information quicker and could have piped in more to what was going on,” Gordon continued. “The guys we brought in did well and I would say for what we had I think guys did a phenomenal job.”

    The two crew chiefs also agreed that their drivers not only did a good job surviving the penalty period but are both in good places in spite of it all.

    “Brad and I spoke for awhile last night and he seems to be strong and in a good place right now,” Keselowski’s crew chief Wolfe said. “Obviously he seemed a little frustrated last weekend with that car and rightfully so.”

    “But he is in a good spot and is motivated.”

    “I think the greatest thing is Joey’s ability to stay focused, get involved, and stay working,” Logano’s crew chief Gordon said. “He hasn’t gotten frustrated with situations and has always continued to give good feedback and give good effort.”

    “It is easy to give up when things are frustrating but I think Joey’s mental endurance has been spot on.”

    While both crew chiefs accepted being in the penalty box and away from the track, they are especially grateful that the penalties were reduced.

    “I think we had a fair appeal process,” Wolfe said. “Our penalties were reduced some and we feel good about that.”

    “I don’t think they were necessarily picking on us,” Wolfe continued. “They just happened to find where we were working and didn’t agree with it.”

    Needless to say, Wolfe and Gordon are most looking forward to putting the whole penalty situation behind them, taking whatever lessons learned from the penalty, and moving on to some tough racing at the Monster Mile.

    “We are putting it in the rear-view mirror and taking it as a learning experience,” Wolfe said. “It isn’t a situation you want to be in but me personally, and I think as a company in general, we learned from that and we are looking forward.”

    “I definitely that this will make us stronger,” Gordon said. “I think it has allowed some people to see the different jobs of what has to happen.”

    “Everybody stepped up and it allowed everyone to be a little stronger player in the program,” Gordon continued. “It will be a good thing for us in the long run.”

    “You have to take bad situations and find the good in them.”
