  • Todd Bodine Scores Truck Win at Rainy Monster Mile

    [media-credit id=62 align=”alignright” width=”223″][/media-credit]In spite of Kevin Harvick having by far the dominant race truck, Todd Bodine, in his No. 11 Red Horse Racing Toyota, stole the win away thanks to rain calling an early end to the Lucas Oil 200.

    This was Bodine’s 22nd victory in 196 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races, but his first victory this year. It was also his first win at the Monster mile.

    “Man, finally,” Bodine said. “It’s pretty special. Dover has always been high on my list as one of my favorite tracks. To be able to come back and get a win in Trucks, it kind of puts in perspective what I’ve needed to do here.”

    “To be able to do it with a brand new team and get the team the Monster trophy, it means a lot.”

    “We didn’t have the best Tundra today but Rick (Gay Jr. crew chief) made a great call,” Bodine said. “You don’t like to win them this way but I’ve lost them this way so I’m going to take it.”

    “I took a gamble today and it paid off,” Gay said simply.

    Parker Kligerman, behind the wheel of the No. 29 Cooper Standard Ram, finished 2nd in the rain-shortened event. This was his first top-10 finish in two races at the Monster Mile and his third top-10 finish in 2012.

    “We had a really fast race truck and were biding our time until halfway,” Kligerman said. “We got a little front end damage and the guys did a great job repairing it.”

    “I was angry and I drove like my hair was on fire,” Kligerman continued. “We drove up to sixth and knew the rain was coming so we just were at the right place at the right time.”

    Kevin Harvick, pole sitter and driver of the No. 2 Tide Chevrolet, did all he could to preserve a good finish, coming out third when the race was called. It was his second top-10 finish in two races at Dover.

    “We had a great truck all weekend and just got beat by the weather there,” Harvick said. “All in all the guys did a great job of controlling all the things that can and that’s all you can do.”

    “I still thought we had a chance,” Harvick continued. “They threw the caution before it even started raining so we wasted 25 laps between two cautions waiting around to see if it was going to rain.”

    “It was just one of those deals.”

    Harvick was unbeatable when he was out front in clean air. But the driver of the No. 2 Tide Chevrolet had more difficulty in the midst of traffic.

    “We just got tight,” Harvick said. “So when we got in traffic, it didn’t handle near  as well.”

    “It would take a little longer in traffic because it would get so tight off the corner.”

    Nelson Piquet, Jr. had a great run in his No. 30 Qualcomm Chevrolet, finishing in the fourth position.

    “At the end with the rain coming and going, we stayed out and it worked out,” Piquet Jr. said. “We ended up with a top five and that was very important for us.”

    Cale Gale, who finished fifth in the No. 33 Rheem Chevrolet, was the highest finishing rookie in the race.

    “Obviously we qualified good today,” Gale said. “We got involved in a little incident at the start of the race that got us behind.”

    “We made adjustments to the truck and the last portion of the race, it was a lot better,” Gale continued. “We were praying for a little bit of rain there at the end.”

    “We are happy,” Gale said. “We finally got a result that we are proud of.”

    Ty Dillon, who finished sixth in his No. 3 Bass Pro Shops/Allstate Chevrolet, had a very special evening in addition to the top-ten finish.

    Dillon broke Ricky Hendrick’s record of five straight top-10 finishes by a rookie in the opening five races and now is the sole owner of that record, with six straight top-10 rookie finishes in the first five races.

    “That’s very special,” Dillon said. “I’m very happy for my team.”

    “Now we need to consistently make those top-fives,” Dillon continued. “We had a fast track today but a little bit to the free side.”

    “Track position meant a lot and we played our hand right there at the end.”

  • Kyle Busch Spanks Truck Field at New Hampshire

    Kyle Busch, driving the No. 18 Toyota/Traxxas Toyota, spanked the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series with a dominant win in the 16th annual running of the F. W. Webb 175 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

    [media-credit id=62 align=”alignright” width=”230″][/media-credit]This was Busch’s 30th career win in 99 Truck races and he now ranks second on the all-time series wins list. Busch also achieved another record, leading 165 laps, the most ever in a 175 lap Truck race at New Hampshire.

    This was Busch’s 104th national series win. And with that domination, Busch also scored a perfect driving rating of 150.

    “We just had a great truck,” Busch said in the understatement of the race. “We worked hard and I want to say ‘hi’ to my wife who is working at home in Charlotte.”

    “It was fun for us but probably not for others.”

    Busch not only dominated the field but he also started from the pole, his 12th in 99 the Truck Series competition. Rowdy Busch was so dominant that only six trucks finished on the lead lap.

    “These guys on this Kyle Busch Motorsports team did a great job,” Busch said. “We unloaded a little bit off but we just had to get the feel where I liked it.”

    “I felt really good with it,” Busch continued. “To be able to qualify first and set sail on our own agenda really meant a lot.”

    Eric Phillips, Busch’s crew chief, agreed wholeheartedly with his driver.

    “Like Kyle said, we were off a little bit so we tried something different,” Phillips said. “We made steady progress through both practices and then the truck was pretty good the rest of the weekend.”

    Busch acknowledged that he has had other dominating performances, such as leading every lap at Phoenix in the Nationwide race earlier in the year.

    “I never thought of that actually,” Busch said. “I think I led 190 or 192 laps of a Nationwide race here too one time.”

    “So, that’s cool,” Busch said. “Certainly Phoenix and Loudon, when I can hit it right, I can hit it right. I’m really, really good.”

    Young Austin Dillon, in the No. 3 Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing, ran second for most of the race to Busch. And that is exactly where he finished.

    This was Dillon’s second top-10 finish in three races at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. He also now leads the point standings by just two over James Buescher.

    “We were in there every lap,” Dillon said. “We even got to lead a lap which was good for our points deal.”

    “Championship has been on our mind all year,” Dillon said. “I feel like we’ve had a great truck to beat each and every week.”

    “We’re finally stringing some finishes together.”

    Kevin Harvick, behind the wheel of the No.2 JEGS Chevrolet, came in third. Although his fifth top-10 finish in six races at New Hampshire, Harvick was frustrated with the racing.

    “It was like a parade,” Harvick said. “It was a terrible race with everybody following each other around.”

    “I got stuck behind the 88 there and lost half a track,” Harvick lamented. “It was just really hard to pass.” Track position was king.”

    Ron Hornaday, Jr., driving the No. 33 Cooked Perfect Meatballs Chevrolet, finished fourth and Johnny Sauter, in the No. 13 SafeAuto/Carrier Chevrolet, rounded out the top five.

    Miguel Paludo, behind the wheel of the No. 7 Stemco Duroline Toyota, was the top-finishing Sunoco rookie. Paludo started from the 15th position and ended the race in the 10th spot.

    “It was a good day for us,” Paludo said. “The two tires in the end was a better call for us. I’m proud of our guys and I’m proud to be in the top ten in a race like this.”

    Joey Coulter, driving the No. 22 RCR Graphics Center Chevrolet , was probably the most frustrated driver on the ‘Magic Mile.’ Coulter qualified third, was moving his way up through the pack, and even led a lap in the race.

    Unfortunately, Coulter was penalized twice for being too fast on pit road and finished his race in the 11th position.

    Matt Crafton, James Buescher, Todd Bodine, Timothy Peters and rookie Miguel Paludo rounded out the top ten finishers, sixth through tenth respectively, in the F. W. Webb 175.

    Todd Bodine Looks For First Martinsville Speedway Clock and Third Championship

    [media-credit name=”Barry Albert” align=”alignright” width=”266″][/media-credit]Last year was the dream season for Todd Bodine as he won the championship, despite all the talk of lack of sponsorship.

    This year so far, it hasn’t been all roses as the year started off with a crash at Daytona, resulting in a 23rd place finish. Though following a third place finish at Darlington, Bodine now sits seventh in points and looks to keep climbing as he heads to one of his favourite tracks – Martinsville Speedway. 

    Bodine took some time to answer some questions about the season, his career and more earlier this week.

    Ashley McCubbin: What are some of your thoughts on the season?

    Todd Bodine: Well, our performance has been really good; we’ve run well every race, just had some bad luck to start the year, but with the performance being good, we just got to keep doing what we’ve been doing.

    AM: What are some of your thoughts going into Martinsville?

    TB: Well, I really like Martinsville. I grew up going there watching my brothers race, always run well there, and never been able to get it all done and get one of those clocks so hopefully we can get there and have a good truck and do our thing right to get one of those trucks.

    AM: Last year with winning the championship, there was a lot of talk about the lack of sponsorship. How is the Sponsorship Situation as of this point for this year?

    TB: Not a whole better. We’ve got Tire Kingdom and Valvoline for a few races and Georgia Boot came on for one race, but other than that, we’re still searching for sponsors. It’s pretty bad when the champion of the series can’t get a sponsor when he runs up front every week, but we’re working. We got a lot of things cooking, a lot of things in the fire.

    AM: What championship means the most?

    TB: Well, they both mean a lot. To get the first one, it was a relief to finally get it done. It’s the first championship our family has ever had. And the second one was validation for the first one. We didn’t luck in to the first one and we came back and we’re able to do it again as a team to prove we were worthy of it the first time.

    AM: What are some of your thoughts on the competition level in the series?

    TB: The competition level is better than it’s ever been from when the series was born till now. It’s obviously the most competition we’ve ever had. We’ve got more really good quality race teams with good quality drivers and it makes for good racing every week.

    AM: Speaking of the quality of drivers, what are some of your thoughts on the Cup drivers coming in and running the series?

    TB: Well, whenever you can race against that type of competition, it just makes you a better driver. That’s the way I’ve always looked at it, even when I was one of the young kids racing Mark Martin and Dale Sr and Harry Gant and all of those guys. The better the driver, competitor you race against, the better driver it makes you so I feel the same way today.

    AM: How’d you get associated with Germain Racing?

    TB: Mike Hilman Sr. He’s been a friend of mine for 25 years and he went over there to run the program and get it going and he brought me in there as a driver.

    AM: With Germain Racing expanding this year, what are some of your thoughts on your teammates?

    TB: Well, we’ve got a great group of guys and the guys working on the trucks to put them together, but I’m fortunate to have three great teammates and they’re all difference. Brendan (Gaughan)’s been around a little while and has run well in the trucks before. Justin (Lofton), it’s only his second year in the Truck Series and he’s a really good kid, lots of talent, and we’re hoping we can bring him along to become a company driver. And Max Papis, a lot of experience in different forms of racing and first year in Trucks so he’s learning and been a great guy. We’ve got an incredible group of people at Germain Racing.

    AM: What was it like growing up in a racing family?

    TB: Well, that’s all I’ve ever done and that’s all I’ve ever known. Our father owned a race track for 25 years. If I knew another way of life or another lifestyle, I could give you a good answer, but I don’t know any other lifestyle, this is all I have ever done. To me, this is normal and you know, I grew up watching my brothers run races and run upfront so that’s where you’re supposed to be and what you’re supposed to do.

    AM: Talking about your brothers, were there any sibling rivalries with getting opportunities?

    TB: No, not at all. We’re so far in difference in age that we never had that sibling rivalry ever. It never had a chance to materialize. The first time we had a chance to compete against each other was in the Cup Series. At that point, we had already got through that and after all of that, it was about beating each other on track.

    AM: What track haven’t you won at that would mean the most for you to win at?

    TB: Martinsville, definitely. I grew up racing at Martinsville and racing at Martinsville and changing tires on pit road and I’ve been going there since I was eight years old to watch my brothers race and I’ve seen them win a lot of races there. To me, that’s like a second home so to win there would be incredible. Another is Walkin’s Glen, my home track. I never got to win a race there. I ran really well and came close to winning, but never got it done. I would like to see the Truck Series to go back there and have another opportunity to win. That’s our home track and that’s the area we were brought up in so those two places are especially special to me.

    AM: Talking about Martinsville, what would be your favorite Martinsville memory?

    TB: There’s so many good memories and a few bad ones, like when Richie Evans got killed. It’s so much apart of the history of our family; it’s hard to name one. I think Geoff’s got 16 wins there and Brett has four or five. That’s a lot of good times, a lot of great memories. It’s hard to pinpoint just one.

    AM: What is your first racing memory that you can recall?

    TB: As a kid, I remember little bits and pieces of everything from watching my brothers race. The first time I ever drove a racecar was at my dad’s track on a Wednesday afternoon when I was 13 years old. Some guys had a car there, practicing, and let me drive it and that was the first time I ever drove a racecar.

    AM: What is some advice that you’d have for people trying to get into racing?

    TB: Well, you got to live it and sleep it. It’s got to be everything you want and you got to be willing to sacrifice to get it. Racing is a tough business and it’s a long hard road, so there’s no easy way to get there. You got to work hard and not let the disappointments get you down.

    AM: What are some of your hobbies away from the track?

    TB: Well, I don’t have a lot of hobbies. Racing is pretty much it. I’m actually trying to build a hotrod, and that’s about it.

    Kyle Busch Becomes Poster Boy For ‘Have At It Boys’ With Display of Emotion

    When Robin Pemberton uttered those four words last year in January, a lot of people were curious as to how the drivers would react. Most thought it would equal some emotions being shown, but at the end of the year, it went beyond just a little bit of emotion.

    [media-credit name=”Barry Albert” align=”alignleft” width=”300″][/media-credit]It was easily seen that Kyle Busch would be the poster boy for it, via some of his antics in the past. These antics have some fans not liking Busch for who he is.

    A simple poll of the fans easily shows that one of the drivers that seems to be on everybody’s list is Kyle Busch. In asking a group of fans as to why, you quickly get the sense it has to do with attitude and actions like the above.

    “He just gives off this vibe that he is better then everybody else and it’s all about him,” Evan Towle said. “Sort of like a young Tony Stewart used to be. Tony used to get on my nerves when he first started in NASCAR, but now he has matured and I like him.”

    “I tend to agree with a lot of the way Kyle Busch acts,” Kyle Sedan said. “Sometimes it’s rather annoying.”

    “Arrogant attitude, expects respect on the track but doesn’t give it back, whines about others when he is doing the same thing, fake,” one fan commented.

    “His attitude,” Cathy Gamble Costigan simply puts it.

    If you take his attitude out of the equation, then a lot of people seem to have respect for him.

    “I am, personally, a Tony Stewart fan, but for Kyle, love him or hate him, he is a damn good driver,” Mike Hearty said. “Race wins don’t lie.”

    “I do really like his support/involvement and commitment to short-track racing.” Sedan added.

    A lot of people have been debating that he needs to change, which has come with mixed reactions.

    Towle says, “We don’t need him, as the sport is doing fine without his babyish acts.”

    In some ways, there are certain things that Busch has to become better at, such as some of the things that we saw this past weekend.

    However overall, the sport needs somebody like Busch. His actions do spruce things up and add something different to the sport, and are needed to invoke discussion and rivalry. If everybody was the same cut, wouldn’t it get boring after a while?

    As Mike Hearty and Kyle Sedan both say, it adds to the sport.

    “I personally love Kyle’s attitude myself,” Hearty said. “NASCAR is entertainment and Kyle entertains in any way he can. Each sport needs a standout person the fans can have a choice to love or hate and he is the one. I do believe, though, when he matures more, his attitude will die down. I think he is young, a star and living in the moment right now.”

    “People either ‘love him’ or ‘love to hate him’,” Sedan says. “So he most definitely adds to the sport, and it is good for it.”

    This year was no exception as he added his own version of “Have at it Boys” to each of the divisions.

    Sprint Cup Series All-Star Race with Denny Hamlin

    After teammate Denny Hamlin took the air off the back of Busch’s car during the Sprint All-Star Race, Busch wasn’t too pleased at all as he called Hamlin out on it.

    “Somebody better keep me from Denny Hamlin after this race!” Busch yelled on the radio. “I had this race won. It was won.”

    Busch then drove the car to the garage area, parking directly in front of Hamlin’s hauler. He went inside and waited till Hamlin got there, where they had a discussion with car owner Joe Gibbs in the middle.

    “Kyle had a run to the outside and with me moving up and getting real tight, it then took some air away from the front of his car and he slid up into the wall. It’s tough for me,” Hamlin told Speed. “We talked about it and basically Kyle was just frustrated; he felt like he had a really good car. Me, I just came from the back with no practice and got back to the front where we needed to be and I felt like if I gave up the lead right there then I was going to give up the win.

    “I don’t think Kyle would do anything different if he was in my situation. It’s just when you’re the leader, my feeling is that you’ve got the whole race track. If a guy is to the outside. then that’s when you need to hold your line.”

    Nationwide Series Food City 250 Bristol Race with Brad Keselowski

    As the Nationwide race was getting closer to ending, Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski were battling hard for the lead. After contact from Keselowski caused Busch to hit the wall, Busch drove back up to Keselowski’s bumper, spinning him.

    “I raced him, raced him, raced him, I don’t know, 12-15 laps? I thought I had him cleared up the back and I moved up in front of him and instead of him doing an [Dale] Earnhardt crossover, he decided to just run into the back of me and put me in the fence,” Busch said.

    “That’s Brad Keselowski. So I went down into the next corner and I dumped him. He does it to everybody else, why can’t I do it to him?”

    Busch won the race while Keselowski ended up 14th.

    “He did a good job, almost cleared me and took it for granted that I would lift to let him in line and I didn’t,” Keselowski said. “That’s his right. We’re going to go to work on beating him next week, and the week after and every other week.”

    In his victory celebration, he changed it up by mocking somebody crying like a baby instead of his bow to go along with the reaction of the fans.

    Truck Series Built Ford Tough 225 at Kentucky and Championship Battle with Todd Bodine

    Early in the race, it was set in stone that it would come down to a battle between Todd Bodine and Kyle Busch. On lap 82 while battling for the lead, Busch took the air off of Bodine’s truck causing him to spin. Though this ended up helping Bodine as with the unscheduled pit stop and resulting strategy, he came out as the winner while Busch finished seventh.

    “Our misfortune turned out to be a fortune,” Bodine said in victory lane. “I’d like to thank Kyle Busch for driving dirty, sucking me down and getting me spun out. That (stop) gave me enough gas. He doesn’t cut anybody a break. He drives that way in every division in every race.”

    Upon hearing the comments, Busch interrupted Bodine’s victory celebration to display his displeasure.

    “He (Busch) doesn’t have to drive like that to win; but he does,” Bodine said. “NASCAR won’t do anything about it. He was mad because I called him out on it.”

    This confrontation at Kentucky promoted a long, hard battle for the Owner’s Championship between Germain Racing (Todd Bodine’s team) and Kyle Busch Motorsports.

    Martinsville was no exception to their battle as they fought hard side-by-side, and at one point, Bodine was accused of trying to fool Busch on a restart.

    “If they think I was trying to do a slow restart to fool Kyle Busch, they are wrong,” Bodine said on the radio at that time. “I just didn’t get a good restart. Message delivered—I’ll work on it.”

    In the end, it was KBM coming out on top.

    The Complete Texas Weekend

    On Friday, Kyle Busch won the Camping World Truck Series race to take over the owner’s points championship standings for Kyle Busch Motorsports.

    On Saturday, Busch finished second to Carl Edwards in the Nationwide Series race, though was unhappy about it as he thought Edwards jumped the start.

    “Does it f—- matter?” Busch said afterwards. “Race is over, guy’s in Victory Lane.”

    On Sunday, Busch stirred up controversy again, following repairs that he had to make on pit road after a wreck.

    Under caution, Busch sped off pit road to try to beat the pace car and stay on the lead lap. He caught up, but NASCAR penalized him one lap for speeding.

    Busch then went on a rant on the radio against NASCAR and showed the officials the middle finger on pit road, which incurred a penalty of two laps for driver misconduct.

    “I’m the only one who will stand up to ’em, and they’re gonna show me how far I can stand up,” Busch said on the radio after the penalty. He then added that it was freedom of speech, going against the constitutional rights of everybody.

    NASCAR penalized Busch $25,000 and putting him on probation until December 31st for “actions dentimental to the sport of stock car racing”.

    Busch released the following statement following the announcement…

    “I accept NASCAR’s penalty and realize what I did during Sunday’s race at Texas was inappropriate.

    “Even in my relatively short time here in NASCAR, it’s pretty obvious to everyone that I wear my emotions on my sleeve. Sometimes that passion has allowed me to find that little something extra I needed to win, and other times it’s made me cross the line. Sunday at Texas was one of those days.

     “I lost my cool, plain and simple. It’s not acceptable, and I know that. I apologize to NASCAR, its fans, all the partners who support Joe Gibbs Racing, and all the people who work so hard to give me a race car that’s capable of winning races every week. All of those people deserve better from me, and I owe it to them to keep my emotions in check.”

     

    Busch had other key incidents this year, including an argument with Jeff Burton. Though with them all, he just kept being himself and holding his part in the “Have at it Boys” policy.

    During the next couple of weeks, I will reflect upon these incidents as we look back at what all broke loose in 2010.
