    World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series Returns to Arizona for First Time Since 2009

    TUCSON, Ariz. – Jan. 8, 2012 – It’s been a long wait for sprint car fans in Arizona.

    The last time the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series competed in the Grand Canyon State was March 2009, when Chad Kemenah dominated the feature to claim the final checkered flag at famed Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix.

    The World of Outlaws STP Sprint Cars are set to return to Arizona for the Wildcat Shootout on Saturday, March 9, at Tucson International Raceway, which last hosted an STP Sprint Car event in 2007.

    “Usually it’s really, really neat because the fans don’t get to see us very often,” Kemenah said. “It’s neat for us because you have a little more even playing field.”

    Paul McMahan and reigning series champion Donny Schatz each won a race at Tucson International Raceway in 2006. Steve Kinser, a 20-time World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series champion, earned the victory in March of 2007.

    Elko Speedway to cover pavement for unique dirt event on Friday, May 10

    ELKO, Minn. – Nov. 27, 2012 – For the first time since a successful two-year stint at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2000-01, the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Cars will compete on a pavement track temporarily covered in dirt in 2013.

    Elko Speedway, a 3/8-mile pavement track located approximately a half hour south of Minneapolis, will host its first-ever World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series event on Friday, May 10.

    Sammy Swindell, who won twice on the dirt-caked Bristol Motor Speedway, touted the job of covering Bristol Motor Speedway as a success. He also added that it levels the playing field for all competitors.

    “You don’t know what you’re going to be up against until you get there,” Swindell said.

    While it will be the first World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series event at Elko Speedway, it’s far from the first race on dirt at the semi-banked oval. Track owner Tom Ryan said Elko Speedway is covered in dirt each fall to end the season and begin the ensuing season. A variety of events are held on the dirt before it is pealed for the pavement season.

    “We do it all the time,” Ryan said. “It’s not so much a new thing for us to have dirt on our track, but to have the World of Outlaws is certainly huge.

    “We’ve had nothing but success on dirt. It really, truly is a progressive banking. For sprint cars, there are three full grooves all around the track. They can run low. They can run high. They can run a diamond pattern. We see it all.”

    The Champion is Crowned; Blaney Dominates Final Night

There were 81 races yet to be run. A summer yet to come filled with thrills spills and challenges. Tonight was the furthest thing from anyone’s mind. But the night had come. Was it possible that 81 races had come and gone so quickly? The night was at hand and the champions were crowned. The competitors all seemed to breathe a heavy sigh of relief. The fans a heavy sigh of regret. The 2012 World of Outlaws season had drawn to a close.

    The second night of the World Finals was just as exciting as the first. There was a wild desperation in the air. There were matters to be settled. Changes to be announced, for instance the new tire for 2013 would be Hoosier despite the continued rumors to the contrary. Joey Saldana would be in the legendary 71M ride, which was made famous by Outlaws legend Doug Wolfgang, would again take the track in 2013. Daryn Pittman would take over the 9 for Kasey Kahne Racing. And the new logo would take on a bright and more colorful look with the red white and blue STP colors gracing the wings of every car next year.

    Qualifying was Thursday night. The quick time was set by David Gravel, in his colorful tribute to Breast Cancer. The beautiful black pink and silver car proclaimed the dedication “Beyond Boobs” and made a strong statement to remind all of us that there were battles fiercer than those about to take place on the race track going on around the world. Gravel’s time was a lightning fast 13.026 seconds around the 5/8ths mile track. He was followed by Dale Blaney, Lucas Wolfe, Brian Brown, and Stevie Smith.

    The first of 5 heat races would find Friday night’s winner picking up where he left off. Sammy Swindell jumped out to an early lead and ran away with the race. He would be followed to the line by David Gravel, Greg Hodnett and Brook Tatnell all transferring to the A Main.

    The second heat race would also be a runaway show with Dale Blaney leading by 2.5 seconds at one point before being slowed by a caution flag on lap 4 when Shane Stewart hit a tire marker. The field would not get a lap in before Danny Holtgraver would hit the same tire marker and destroy the front end of his car. Holtgraver took the car to the trailer and retired from the heat. The cautions merely slowed the inevitable as Blaney took the win over Cody Darrah, Daryn Pittman and Tim Shaffer.

    The third heat race was an incredible race with Lucas Wolfe and Jac Haudenschild exchanging slide jobs and maneuvering one another for 3rd and 4th place all the while Lance Dewease and Craig Dollansky were checking out on the field.  In the end Haudenschild would claim third over the much younger Lucas Wolfe but it would be a hard race all the way to the line.

    The fourth heat race would bring with it some drama. Bobby Howard was thought to have changed Right Rear Tires from qualifying on Thursday. Outlaws rules say that you must run the heat on the right rear you qualified on or you are disqualified from the heat. In the end the identifier mark was found on the tire and the start of the heat was called back after a half lap to allow Howard to join the field in his 10th place starting spot. The drama had little effect on the reigning champion, Donny Schatz who came back strong after a disappointing night on Friday,  and won the heat with a hard charging Kraig Kinser on his back bumper. Also transferring to the A Main were Paul McMahan and Kerry Madsen, who prevailed in a hard fought battle with Sam Hafertepe Jr for the final transfer spot.

    The fifth and final heat race of the season displayed a glimpse of the future with Jason Johnson in the Roush Stenhouse Ford taking the win over Stevie Smith, Ed Lynch Jr. and Dean Jacobs. The Ford power plant was the only one in the World Finals and it was the second race card for the 410 built by legendary engine builder Doug Yates.

    The C Main presented an unusual situation and one that you won’t often see. Scheduled to start in the 5th spot was The King of the Outlaws, Steve Kinser. Kinser however, choose to take a provisional into the A Main and scratched from the C. The C was a race of desperation. Jimmy Seger would end up upside down on lap 7 but would exit the car uninjured. Caleb Helms and Danny Mumaw would fight hard to the checkers for the final transfer spot into the B with the position going to Caleb Helms at the line. Jack Sodeman Jr. would win the race.

    The Dash was a mix of experience and challenge. With names like Swindell, Gravel, Dollansky, Schatz, and Blaney the talent pool was deep. But the track had required work and water. The new track surface was a mystery to the drivers in the Dash. That mystery would take its toll on one of the legends of the sport, Sammy Swindell, when on the first lap he got into the greasy unworked part of the track and flipped the car violently. Swindell would retire from the dash and go to work to get the car ready for the A Main. The dash would see Stevie Smith dominate over Lucas Wolfe and Dale Blaney, with very strong performances coming from Donny Schatz, Kraig Kinser, Daryn Pittman and Craig Dollansky.

    The B Main would transfer the final 6 qualifying cars to the A Main. The race was a hard fought battle between Joey Saldana who would win on the final lap over Brian Brown, Jason Sides and Brian Sebetto.

    This was the final night of the season, which meant that everyone who didn’t make the field who had a provisional could now use it without fear of needing it worse on another night. Chad Kemenah, Bill Rose, and Steve Kinser all three did so to bring the A Main field to 27 cars.

    The new surface had been run by the Modifieds, and the Late Models and had developed a hole in turn 1 right in the center groove. Although the hole didn’t bother the heavier cars, it was an obstacle that the Sprint Cars would avoid if at all possible. The track had turned dusty and dry and very slick after the track work, a condition that would play well into the hands of some and not so well in the hands of others.

    There were questions, would Swindell make it back out for the A? Would the hole figure into the end result of the race? With Donny Schatz showing a much stronger performance after experimenting with engine and chassis the night before would he claim the final race of his 5th championship season?

    When the cars pushed off the 1 of Sammy Swindell was in its 12th starting spot. But the car was hurt badly. Repairs had been made as best as they could be but the Big Tree Stands number one had frame damage on the front of the car. In reality probably only 5 or 6 drivers on the circuit would have even attempted the final night of the World Finals with a frame damaged car. Sammy Swindell was one of those drivers. How severely it would affect the car no one would know until the green flag dropped.

    The A Main was a barn burner, with Dale Blaney picking up from the night before when he cut a tire and lost the race with 5 laps to go. Sammy Swindell would pull off the track after 3 laps with a car that simply was not drivable. Donny Schatz was making progress through the field when he tangled wheels with Greg Hodnett and spun to the top of the track. Unable to avoid the dead in the water STP #15, Jac Haudenschild clipped the front wing and spun. Cody Darrah would hit the nose of the 15 full tilt and flip down the banking to the middle of the track. Haudenschild would make repairs and return, Schatz was done for the night as was Cody Darrah. The race would resume but not for long, Craig Dollansky would lose a left rear tire and hit the wall in 3 collecting Stevie Smith and Kerry Madsen in the melee. All drivers were unhurt. The double checkers would wave over Dale Blaney and Paul McMahan who would make it a close battle all the way to the line. Jason Johnson would bring his Ford home third.  McMahan would be the races hard charger coming from 22nd starting spot to finish 2nd.

    Beyond the cheers and the thrills of victory there was weariness. The drivers were tired. The teams were tired. The officials were tired. Nothing illustrated that more than the exchange between Johnson and McMahan who disagreed on an on track incident but after a few words decided to let it be. Or the pushing of a winged sprint car into the infield by an Outlaws official on a 4 wheeler with a bump draft to safety and then leaving it in the infield grass for a push track to take it back to the pits following the race. The fans were tired but were already feeling the longing for just one more race.

    The crowning of the champion and the presentation of the trophy brought a long season to an end. A season full of changes, lessons learned, victories hard fought, and tragedies. The Sprint Car racing community had lost 5 of its heroes in the span of 9 months. But the lasting lesson would remain that of perseverance. Never quit. Never give up. No matter how long the odds or short the resource, follow your heart, believe in yourself and your team mates and carry on. It is perhaps the greatest gift that our heroes can give us at the end of the year because that lesson alone will carry us through the winter and bring us to Volusia in February where we will begin the circle over again.

    Swindell Still Winning in Night Two of World Finals

    [media-credit name=”Chris Dolack/World of Outlaws” align=”alignright” width=”200″][/media-credit]In the shadow of the big track at Charlotte stands one of the fastest and most challenging dirt tracks in our country. It is known simply as the dirt track at Charlotte. Its big sister across the street watches over her protectively but in truth she is very capable of taking care of herself. Tonight she showed the very best that fact without hesitation.

    The second night of the World Finals at Charlotte went off without a hitch but with a few surprises. The qualifying held on Thursday for the Friday and Saturday race cards foreshadowed tonight’s results.

    Thursday’s qualifying was a long day at the track. With qualifying for 3 major classes of racing, Super Dirt Modifieds, World of Outlaws Late Models, World of Outlaws Sprint Cars, it was a painfully long and sometimes confusing day. The field of 50 sprint cars mixed in with 70 late models and 50 modifieds took almost 5 hours to qualify. The Sprints often run with an accompanying class but never anything like this. This was 3 headline acts all competing for the fans and the spotlight.

    Friday nights qualifying was eventful for several reasons. One Donny Schatz clinched the World of Outlaws Sprint Car championship when he made the first qualifying lap in the Tony Stewart Racing STP Number 15. But his qualifying time would be dismal and a disappointment when Schatz ended up 25th fast with what was rumored to be a Chevy Performance R&D power plant.

    Fast time would go to Daryn Pittman who made his Outlaws debut in the Kasey Kahne Racing Ollie’s Bargain Outlet number 49. Pittman’s time of 13.047 seconds would top the charts ahead of Shane Stewart, Kraig Kinser, Sammy Swindell and Craig Dollansky. The top 5 cars were separated by 6 hundredths of a second. “Obviously with 50 cars the first goal is to go out there and get in the invert,” Pittman said after his third quick time of the season. “There’s 50 really good sprint cars and probably 30 of the best in the country, so you just start with a small goal of making sure you’re in the invert so you’ve got a chance to win and you try to improve from there.”

    The 5 heat races would be run on Friday night. And with 3 classes running it was a very exciting night of racing for those in attendance.

    The first heat race would run into havoc on the first lap when Ryan Smith, Eric Riggins and David Gravel would tangle in 4. Riggins would be done for the night. Gravel would make repairs and return. The heat would be won by Australian legend Brook Tatnell who held off a hard charging Joey Saldana. Pittman would come in 3rd and Kerry Madsen would come in 4th to transfer to the A Main. Gravel would rally back to finish 6th.

    The second heat was a fast paced race that would again find trouble early when Shane Stewart, Dean Jacobs and Brian Sebetto would tangle. Jacobs would end up on his roof and out for the evening. No drivers were injured. The race would be won by PA Posse member Lance Dewease over Brian Brown, Paul McMahan and Jason Sides.

    Heat number 3 would be free of incident with Dale Blaney leading the way over Sam Hafertepe Jr and Danny Holtgraver, and Kraig Kinser. Blaney previewed the strength of his car briefly in the heat but would show his hand later as to just how strong the car was.

    Heat 4 was a power house show of talents and speed. Won by Sammy Swindell, the race was a display of skills by Swindell and Haudenschild. Although Haudenschild would fade late in the heat to 6th, he was a strong presence throughout the race. Transferring to the A along with Swindell, were Ed Lynch Jr, Lucas Wolfe and Greg Wilson.

    Heat Race number 5 would bring the surprise of the evening, or maybe not so much of a surprise judging from the qualifying the night before. The race would be a fast and rough show that would be dominated by Jason Johnson in his Roush Stenhouse Ford. He would be chased to the line by Craig Dollansky, Terry McCarl and Steve Kinser. Failing to make the A was the new World of Outlaws Champion Donny Schatz. It seemed that Schatz struggled to maintain speed until late in the race when he climbed to 6th.

    The C Main was a race of desperation. The C would be won by Jack Sodeman Jr. with Danny Mumaw, Warren Johnson, Bill Rose, and Kory Crabtree the top 5. Sodeman and Mumaw would transfer to the B Main.

    The B Main would be the Wild Child show, with Jac Haudenschild putting on a clinic in how to make a Sprint Car fly. Haudenschild would lead every lap and come home ahead of Brian Sebetto, Stevie Smith and Greg Hodnett who would all transfer to the A Main. Champion, Donny Schatz would again come home 6th. Out of provisionals, the champ would watch the race from the pits. Taking a provisional to get in were Cody Darrah and Chad Kemenah.

    The A Main was perhaps one of the best features of the entire season. With 8 lead changes and three wide action all through the pack. Dale Blaney would jump out to an early lead but would have to hold off a charging Sammy Swindell and a hard driving determined Brian Brown. Blaney was able to hold off both until he cut down a tire with 6 laps to go. Brown would inherit the lead and would hold off Sammy Swindell until the next to the last lap when Swindell would make a charge on the high side out of four to take the lead at the line. Swindell would never look back. Brown would then have his hands full with a very strong Kraig Kinser. Swindell would win by a corner over Brown, Kraig Kinser, Paul McMahan, and Jason Johnson. Swindell who said he had a good strong car and had to exercise patience until the fuel load burned off quipped, “They only pay for the last lap, so I just wanted to lead that one.”

    With the night coming to an end, it was time to start getting ready for Saturday night and the final night of the World Finals. Qualifying is already in the books. The lineups are already set. All that is left is to run the final race of the year. The Outlaws champion Donny Schatz is sitting much better for Saturday than he was for tonight. There is a different quick time holder. But still there and still determined is the old guard. Sammy Swindell did not come to go home with only one win. Jac Haudenschild will not be happy with 8th. And the King of the Outlaws has never been an also ran and he will not be settling in to the role now.

    As the tail lights wind out of the speedway and the voices continue their excited chatter as they exit. The track has grown quiet. It’s time to give her a drink of water and put her to bed for the night. The wind is chilly and the stars are bright. From a distance you can almost see her snuggle up to her big sister and say “Did you see what I did tonight?”

    March Doubleheader Headlines Outlaws in Vegas, Baby!

    LAS VEGAS – Oct. 30, 2012 – Whether slots, blackjack or sprint cars is an interest, the trio will be combined next March when the World of Outlaws STP Series returns to Las Vegas for the Outlaws in Vegas, Baby!

    The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will host a doubleheader on Wednesday and Thursday, March 6-7, marking the fifth consecutive season and 16 th year since 1996 that a World of Outlaws event will be contested on the half mile.

    The event will lead into the NASCAR weekend at the famed facility, which has featured a different winner in the last five races. Donny Schatz, who is on pace to record his fifth World of Outlaws championship this season, has recorded a series-leading six victories at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

    Tim Kaeding claimed a thriller in the only race this season with Jason Sides charging from 10th to second and Steve Kinser from 14th to third. Chad Kemenah placed fourth and Brian Brown rallied from 21st to round out the top five.

Two make up dates for the World of Outlaws in a single day. The Iron Man A Main postponed by rain in August was first up and then the Spring Classic make up from earlier in the year were both set to be run on the same day. It is important to note that while the weather man was predicting thunderstorms for the area the rain stayed away this time. But the fans did not. The anticipation was high. The points race would for the most part be determined in these two races. If Dollansky was going to make up ground he had two races and one night to do it. If Schatz was going to stumble it would be now.

    The Iron Man make up ran first. With a few scratches and alternates added, the 24 car field took the green for the longest feature of the season for the outlaws on one of the toughest tracks in country. 55 laps on the high banks of the third mile oval was a true test of the desire and the equipment of the Outlaws.

    To win the Iron Man you had to know how to manage tires, engines, fuel, and the track. You had to know when to go. You had to know when to let someone go. You had to be one with the car and one with the race without over driving or using up what you had. That is a task that is a tall hill for any driver regardless of the skill level or experience level.

    The Iron Man was a wild race and a precursor of what would come. The race would have 7 cautions and reds. None more frightening than leader Kerry Madsen’s violent roll that nearly destroyed the car when he got tangled in lap traffic. Also in a scarey crash was The King of the Outlaws Steve Kinser. Although Kinser’s car would be repaired and he would return to the track the crowd would hold their breath until his lumbering frame climbed up out of the car. Sammy Swindell would be bitten by a shredded Goodyear that would send him on his lid as well. Although all drivers were uninjured the chaos would reign all the way to the final lap.

    The race would end with a Green White Checkered finish that would see Craig Dollansky become the first to win back to back Iron Man races. “It’s a long race,” Dollansky said after his ninth World of Outlaws win of the season. “Tonight was an intense race, but it was great to get a win.”

    Dollansky’s win failed to help him much in the points as second place went to points leader Donny Schatz. Schatz had to make the A main and finish in the top half of the field to for all practical purposes seal his 5th championship.

    Jason Sides was third, Cody Darrah fourth, and Kraig Kinser would come home 5th.

    After clearing the grandstands, and reopening the gates again it was time for the Spring Classic. Yes the SPRING classic. OK so it was October, but it was a sprint car race and the fans were there in force to see it. This would be a full card. The points situation was heavy thing. This was one of two races remaining. Donny Schatz was out of provisionals and he didn’t quite have enough points to cover both if he missed the show.

    With 32 cars signed in for the Spring Classic, qualifying would again be at a premium. With the track having already hosted the 55 lap Iron Man it was an open track with high cushion and a run in surface allowing for a lot of speed for the Outlaws.

    Quick Time would be set by former Rookie of the Year Cody Darrah with a lap of 10.494 seconds or 114.237 mph. Second would go to Black Jack Brian Brown, third, Craig Dollansky, fourth Sammy Swindell and fifth Joey Saldana. The third place qualifying spot would gain Dollansky another point on Schatz who qualified 9th.

    The 4 heat races would be an eclectic mix of Outlaws and locals that would transfer the top 5 to the A and the top 2 to the Dash. The first heat would be captured by The King of the Outlaws, Steve Kinser, Kinser would be followed closely by Donny Schatz and Joey Saldana. Also transferring were Cody Darrah and Jordan Goldesberry.

    The 2nd heat would see Chad Kemenah chased to the checkers by Kerry Madsen and a hard charging Brian Brown. Also transferring would be Kraig Kinser and Mike Hess.

    The 3rd heat was won by Jason Sides who held off a hard charging Lucas Wolfe. Also transferring would be Craig Dollansky and Brad Loyet in his Outlaws debut as well as Dustin Selvage.

    The 4th and final heat was won by Greg Wilson who held off a determined Sammy Swindell. Also transferring were Bill Balog, Paul May and Ben Wagoner.

    The Last Chance Showdown was run next in change of the normal pattern for the Outlaws. The 12 car field had one scratch before the green flag when Paul Neinhiser retired from competition. With Bill Rose on the pole and only 4 to transfer the race was a hard fought affair that would find Bill Rose, Jim Moughan, Jimmy Bridgeman and A.J. Bruns moving into the A Main.

    The Dash inversion was a 4. Which put Jason Sides on the pole with Sammy Swindell to his outside and Brian Brown behind him. If Jason wasn’t hearing the theme for Jaws in his head he probably should have. But as fate would have it Brown would be penalized for jumping the start and Sammy Swindell would get a bad start at the green. Sides would pull out to a lead that he would never relinquish. Donny Schatz would climb from a 5th place starting place to finish 2nd. Brian Brown came back up to 3rd and Lucas Wolfe would come home 4th.

    The A Main would be a dynamic 40 lap affair that would be a test of determination and will between Lucas Wolfe and Jason Sides in the early going with Sides coming out on top. Kasey Kahne Racing driver, Cody Darrah would break a brake rotor and throw pieces of it all over the track causing too much damage for Darrah to continue. Sammy Swindell would experience mechanical issues that would send him to the infield and ultimately 12 laps down before his return to the racing surface. The second Kasey Kahne racing entry would go up in a ball of flame on the back stretch just past halfway. Saldana was uninjured but his night was over. The length of the race with the yellows and reds began to bite drivers late in the going with Steve Kinser being the first to coast to the infield out of gas. It would bring out a caution and set up a Green White Checkered finish. On the restart a spin brought out yet another caution pushing the race to beyond it’s 40 lap distance as the Outlaws rules state that the race must end with 2 consecutive green flag laps. The final Green White Checker would take the race to 41 laps. Jason Sides would outlast Donny Schatz, Brian Brown, Kerry Madsen and Kraig Kinser. However several cars coasted across the line out of gas.

    The win was an emotional one for Jason Sides, “I had Mark Hardee riding with me,” Sides said. “It wasn’t his time to go, but the cancer got him and we hate that. He’ll be with us a lot in our hearts and everything, so hopefully we’ll get us a couple more wins with him riding with us.”

    It was Sides’ first World of Outlaws feature win since July 2 of last season and extended his streak of at least one Outlaws victory in the each of the past four years.

    The KSE Hard Charger Award went to Brad Loyet in his first Outlaws run. Loyet came from 20th to 8th.

    It was a long night. It was an exciting night. It was a night that happened because of the hard work and dedication of the employees at Ken Schraders I-55 Speedway in Pevely, Missouri. It happened because of the hard work of the team of the World of Outlaws. It happened because of the teams and drivers of the greatest Sprint Car Series in the world.

    The points race is all but over. All Donny Schatz must do to lock up his 5th World of Outlaws title is attempt to qualify for the World Nationals in Charlotte. But Donny Schatz is a champion. Just attempting to qualify will never be enough. Donny Schatz is there to win. He is there to race as hard as his equipment will allow him and win the race.

    Craig Dollansky has given Donny Schatz a hard run staying right there and pushing him hard. Schatz could not lift or coast not even a single race because if he did Dollansky was right there to claim the prize.

We share his hurt and his loss and we send our prayers and our thoughts not only to Jason Sides and his family but to the family and friends of his fallen comrade Mark Hardee.     Steve Kinser Notches Win 574 At Rolling Wheels Raceway

Those are the best descriptions for Rolling Wheels Raceway Saturday night. But cold has never been a deterrent for the Outlaws or their fans. Cold or not when the gates opened at 5PM New York time the crowds began to pour in. With hot laps on the track and not many empty seats seen there was still a line of traffic to get onto the raceway’s grounds. The grandstands were packed. The track was packed and the drivers were rested and ready after almost a week off. It was time to race. And nothing would warm the crowd and the drivers like the mighty wings of the Outlaws on the track.

    The evening saw a 28 car field for the 5/8 mile semi banked dirt clay oval track in Elbridge, N.Y.. Qualifying draw would spread the touring Outlaws throughout the order with Sammy Swindell going out last. The track record of 15.952 seconds was set 8 years ago by Craig Dollansky. Though the field would get no where near that record tonight, it was still a very fast field with Quick Time going to Daryn Pittman with a lap of 17.027 seconds or 132.143 mph. Dollansky would time 2nd and Schatz would time 3rd. Allowing Dollansky to pick up a point on Schatz in the very beginning of the night. The remainder of the top 5 were Joey Saldana and local driver Shawn Donath.

    The first heat of the night would set the tone for the evening. A fast paced no holds barred 8 lap shootout that saw a return of The King, Steve Kinser to the Dash. The race would be won by Kerry Madsen, with Kinser coming home second, Saldana third, Quick Time holder Daryn Pittman in 4th and Justin Barger in 5th and an old friend from the Canada Glenn Styres rounding out the transferring cars. Not making the cut would be last years rookie of the year Cody Darrah. Darrah who had a uncharacteristically bad evening would struggle all evening.

    The second heat would see ASCOC Champion, David Gravel take the checkers over Lucas Wolfe, Shawn Donath, Sammy Swindell, Craig Dollansky and Bill Rose. Sammy Swindell would literally hold class for the young drivers in the field when he climbed from 8th to 4th in a single lap. Although Swindell could advance no further, he gave notice that a poor qualifying lap was not going to hold the Big Game Tree Stands number 1 back. He served notice in a very convincing manner that he was there to win, and starting from the back only meant he would have to work a little harder at it.

    The third heat would qualify the final 6 into the A Main. Chad Kemenah, Kraig Kinser, Donny Schatz, Paul McMahan, Jessica Zemken, and Jamie Collard would all advance into the feature. Kemenah, Kinser and Schatz would advance to the Dash.

    The Dash was a hard fought battle between the top 4 cars. But it offered a glimpse of what was to come later in the evening with the A Main. The dash was won by Chad Kemenah with Steve Kinser coming home second, Donny Schatz third and Kerry Madsen 4th. There was a bit of foreboding there when Dollansky crossed the stripe in 7th after having Magneto trouble in both the dash and his heat race. Was Dollansky snake bit? Only time would tell.

    The Last Chance Showdown would transfer the final 6 cars into the A Main. Looking at the line up one would be tempted to pick Cody Darrah from the outside front row as a sure thing. But making that choice would have been a mistake. Long time modified champ Frank Cozze was starting on the pole. Cozze had won his first Sprint Car race earlier in the year in upstate New York. Frank was determined to make a run for his second tonight. Cozze jumped out into the lead on lap one and never looked backed winning the last chance showdown by a 1.8 second margin over Cody Darrah, Bobby Breen, Joe Smith, Daniel Mazy and Mike Stelter.

    The field for the A Main was set and even with the deep chill in the air the anticipation was palpable. Steve Kinser had the most wins of any driver at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park having won 11 out of 34 races could he send the monkey on his back, packing back to the zoo and win number 12? Donny Schatz was lurking back in the third spot, Schatz had been on a terror for 12 weeks, would he take win number 12 on the season? Madsen had run hard all night and was showing the same kind of patience and skills that had made him a contender and winner all season, would he make it number 6 on the year? And far from least sitting back in 21st starting spot was the crafty veteran and 4 time champion Sammy Swindell. Swindell had already shown he could move up very quickly through a field would he find a way to the front tonight?

    The 25 lap feature was a hard fought and determined race. Chad Kemenah lead 16 laps and at one time had pulled away from 2nd place Steve Kinser by almost 3 seconds. But then came the traffic, and no one works traffic better than the King of the Outlaws and on lap 17 Steve Kinser took the lead and worked the traffic like a maestro conducting the 5th symphony of Beethoven. Where ever he found them he passed them pulling out to a straight a way lead on Kemenah and Schatz in less than a lap. His teammate Donny Schatz wasn’t done yet and he split lapped traffic on the bottom to take second from Kemenah with 4 laps to go. But the King was long gone. Schatz could close but he was too far back to catch Steve Kinser. Afterward, Schatz would be asked if he had had more time could he have caught him? Schatz replied, “No way he was hooked up. We finished 2nd. We came to win but we finished 2nd.” Chad Kemenah would come home 3rd. And in post race comments said that he had no regrets. Oh and that crafty veteran Sammy Swindell he would be the Hard Charger of the race climbing from 21st to 8th.

    There was not a single position that was not hard fought for on the track in the A Main. Every driver, every team ran hard and showed the skills and guts that it takes to take on the might wings of the Outlaws. The winner on the night? Well Steve Kinser took home the trophy and the check and he notched win number 574 for his career. But the real winners were the fans in the stands and at home following with help from Johnny Gibson and the WoO team. The World of Outlaws raced hard. They raced wide open. They took chances. They didn’t points race not even Schatz and Dollansky points raced. They raced for the checkers. They reminded us what the real point of the sport is. To cross the line first. If you cross the line first enough times you come home with the most points at the end and you take home the big prize. But you do that with the grace, courage, skills and determination of a champion.

    Oh yeah the points race. Donny Schatz increased his point lead over Craig Dollansky by 9 points going into the final 4 races of the year. That means he has a 168 point lead over Dollansky. Is it insurmountable? No. But Schatz would have to miss at least 2 features for Dollansky to get the championship if Dollansky won both of them. Mathematically it’s possible but it is not very probable. Still however, things happen fast and stranger things have happened. So we go into the next race saying Schatz is close to sealing the championship but he doesn’t have it yet. Will Dollansky find a way? Will Schatz stumble and fall? Will lady luck remain true to her chosen champion thus far Schatz? Or will she jump ship and give Dollansky a hand up to the deck? We have 4 more races to find out.

    Schatz Makes History At Willams Grove

If that is true then Donny Schatz is hitting high tide at the perfect time of the year, the end. But Donny Schatz has more than that in common with history. He now holds a place in it. Tonight the World of Outlaws points leader became the only 5 time winner of the Open Nationals at Willams Grove. Not even teammate Steve Kinser or the wily Sammy Swindell have been able to win it 5 times. Although, Schatz stated, “You will never equal a Steve Kinser or Sammy maybe this is a record that I can capture.” And capture it he did in a spray of oil and plume of smoke, Schatz held off PA Posse member Brian Leppo to take the win.

    The night started out with a much faster track than the Outlaws had yesterday evening. Hot lap times were running in the low 16 second bracket with only .526 seconds separating the fastest time from the 20th fastest time. With 54 cars signed in qualifying would be more important than normal. The dash all by itself would start half of the starting field of the A Main.

    Qualifying would show a steady hold on the speed of the track. Unlike the previous night where the track slowed dramatically making it a huge disadvantage to have a high qualifying draw. As a matter of fact quick time on the night would be set by the very last car to go out. Paul McMahan turned a lap of 16.366 seconds to take the Quick Time honor from his team mate Brian Leppo. McMahan who won the A Main in the Night Before the Open on Friday was one of the few drivers in the field who could honestly claim he was neither Outlaw or Posse. If not one or the other what was he? “I’m just a kid from California making a living,” he said. The remainder of the top 5 were Sammy Swindell, Lucas Wolfe and Danny Lasoski.

    The 54 car field would require 5 heat races. The first heat would be won by Friday nights quick time holder, Stevie Smith. Smith held off a hard charging Craig Dollansky, Greg Hodnett and Danny Deitrich. In a radical change of fortune the winner of the night before’s A Main would have to run the B main Paul McMahan would miss the dash finishing 5th in the heat.

    The second heat was all Posse. Well except for Bill Rose who started 5th and finished 9th. And the Posse showed their colors and their skills. With Lance Dewease and Brian Leppo setting the pace for Chad Layton and Cory Haas.

    The third heat would be a driving clinic put on by Jac Haudenschild and he didn’t even win. As a matter of fact he didn’t even transfer to the A main. But Jac Haudenschild who started 9th put on a show of skills and intestinal fortitude that was a sight to behold. Haudenschild drove from 9th to 6th on a track that was difficult to pass on to say the least. Track position was everything at The Grove unless you were Jac Haudenschild. Known as the Wild Child, Haudenschild drove above the cushion and on the very bottom passing cars where they weren’t. Unfortunately he needed a caution to get the last two positions to transfer to the A Main that caution would never come. The heat was won by Sam Hafertepe who held off Dale Blaney, Daryn Pittman and Sammy Swindell.

    The fourth heat was all Kasey Kahne Racing. With Cody Darrah taking the win over teammate Joey Saldana, Jason Sides and Lucas Wolfe. This heat race would illustrate how quickly fortunes can change in a sprint car race. Brian Montieth who held the final transfer spot all the way to the final corner would clip the wall and finish 9th all in the span of a corner.

    The 5th heat race was a barn burner affair that brought David Gravel home in the first spot with points leader Donny Schatz coming in a very close 2nd followed by Ryan Taylor and Danny Lasoski who had his hands full with a hard charging Kerry Madsen.

    Perhaps the most surprising of races was the C main. Surprising because of the names that were in it. Fred Rahmer, Danny Holtgraver, Jac Haudenschild, Kyle Larson, and 20 time World of Outlaws champion, Steve Kinser. Kinser would struggle to a 6th place spot and miss the B main by 4 spots. The B would be won by Jac Haudenschild who passed 5 cars in 2 corners before taking the lead and holding off Tim Shaffer.

    The Dash would be a very fast paced affair that saw Donny Schatz start on the pole after an inversion of 8 was drawn. Schatz never lead a lap in the dash as Cody Darrah jumped out to the lead off turn 1 and never looked back. But Schatz stayed strong in second to start on the outside of the front row.

    The B Main would transfer 4 to the A. Those 4 would be the top two starting rows of Paul McMahan, Brian Montieth, Don Kreitz Jr., and Alan Krimes. The rest of the field would going to the trailer. Well with the exception of 2 Willams Grove provisional holders and 2 World of Outlaws provisional holders. Going into the A on Outlaws provisionals were Steve Kinser and Kraig Kinser. Going in on Willams Grove provisionals were Brent Marks and Doug Esh.

    The A main would be snake bitten from the drop of the green all 6 of them. In fact the field was under red with a car upside down before a lap was ever posted to the board. Danny Lasoski jumped the start and was penalized a row. Pole sitter Cody Darrah jumped the start and was penalized a row. When the race finally did get under way Craig Dollansky was the pole sitter. Starting right next to his rival in the points Donny Schatz. Dollansky got an early run and took the lead out of two on the first lap. He lead despite numerous charges by Schatz until on the 24th lap a lapped car spun right in front of him leaving him no where to go and collected the leader. The misfortune for Dollansky was a nightmare but for 2nd place running Donny Schatz it was a stroke of luck. Schatz would lead for the remainder of the A Main even though on the final two laps his car was smoking out of the corners. In victory lane the oil on the side panels was evident the checkers had fallen just in time to beat Schatz’s rapidly expiring engine. Brian Leppo would come home 2nd and Cody Darrah 3rd.

    The victory was more than a victory for Schatz. It was history making. With that win Donny Schatz became the first driver to ever win 5 Open Nationals in his career. Something that at the beginning of the year no one would have believed possible. But like the tides change and ebb so does lady luck and so does the drive of a champion. Schatz never had any intention of becoming an also ran. He never had any plans to give up the chase. He and his Tony Stewart Racing STP team dug a little deeper. Worked a little harder. Searched a little further until finally things came together and when they did, Schatz went on a terror, logging 11 top 5 finishes in a row and 9 top 3 finishes. Schatz took the point lead and has never looked back.

    Tonight Donny Schatz stretched that points lead out yet again and now leads Craig Dollansky by 158 points going into the last 5 races of the year. But it’s not over not by a long shot. Things happen quickly in Sprint Car racing. Almost as quickly as the weather changes. With no provisionals remaining at his disposal Schatz must race his way into every one of those 5 remaining races. With 150 points awarded to the winner of the A Main every night and 75 to any driver who does not advance to the A. Schatz’s lead could evaporate in one bad night. Schatz knows this and he is not slowing down. Dollansky knows it too. It’s why his team repaired the car in the A and put him back out on the track to finish 16th. Every point counts. Nothing is a given. Nothing can be taken for granted. Nothing can be overlooked. This is a game for the championship. Schatz’s 5th and Dollansky’s 1st. And both know without a doubt that the tide can turn. Dollansky is betting it will and that he will be close enough to capitalize when it does. Schatz is betting it won’t turn soon enough if it turns at all.  Who is right? We have 5 more races to run to find out.

    Joey Saldana Released by Kasey Kahne Racing

    On Monday, Joey Saldana was released from his driving duties with the No. 9 Great Clips / Sage  Fruit / ASE sprint car for Kasey Kahne Racing, but will complete the remaining races on the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series 2012 schedule in the car.

    “While I’m disappointed to have been released by Kasey after seven seasons with the team, I’m thankful to Kasey and my crew guys for all their effort,” said Joey. “We  have won a lot of races together.”

    While driving for  Kasey Kahne Racing, Joey has accomplished 77 total wins (70 of them being World  of Outlaws wins) and has finished second twice, third twice, and fourth twice in the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship points.  He currently sits fourth in points with seven races remaining.

    “I want to thank  all my fans for their support through the years and in the upcoming  off-season,” Joey remarked.  “I am hopeful to be back out on the World of Outlaws tour next year competing for a championship.”  No plans are in place with any team at this time.

    World of Outlaws Take Part in NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week XLI

    The series will compete at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park on Saturday, Oct. 6

    ELBRIDGE, N.Y. – Sept. 25, 2012 – The largest track is also one of the final facilities that the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series will compete on this season.

    The Outlaws head to Rolling Wheels Raceway Park as part of the NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week XLI on Saturday, Oct. 6. The 5/8-mile oval signifies five races to go.

    “I always enjoy going there,” Kerry Madsen said. “It’s kind of a unique track, so I’m looking forward to a good run.”

    The World of Outlaws competed at the big track once this season, when Paul McMahan claimed his only Outlaws win of the season on May 16.

    Craig Dollansky finished second with Chad Kemenah rounding out the podium.

    “Rolling Wheels always seems to be pretty repeatable as far as the racing surface and stuff,” Kemenah said. “The last few times we’ve been there we’ve had some really good races and we were fortunate the last time to come out with a podium, so hopefully we can go back there, get qualifying good and run up front.”
