  • Bowman, Busch Quickest In Dover XFINITY Practices

Bowman, Busch Quickest In Dover XFINITY Practices

The two XFINITY practices on Friday in preparation for Saturday’s race at Dover International Speedway fought against the weather and although one session ended up going off without any issues, the second session was cut short due to rain.

Session one featured Kyle Busch putting down a lap at 157.729 mph, the fastest of the session by a wide margin. Busch was over three-tenths of a second faster than teammate Erik Jones in second. Busch enters this weekend looking for his ninth win of the XFINITY Series season and the 16th of the season for Joe Gibbs Racing. Jones enters this weekend three points out of the advancing field in the XFINITY Series Chase and needs to have a good run on Saturday to continue racing for a championship.

Alex Bowman was third fastest followed by Austin Dillon who was fourth. Joey Logano looks to bring the Team Penske No. 22 Ford to victory lane for the first time this season and started the weekend off by running fifth in practice.

In the second practice session, Bowman was the fastest on the board when rain came roughly halfway through the session. Bowman has had quite an adventure since the last time he raced at Dover; this spring he ran his first NASCAR race of the year and opened some eyes by finishing third. Since then, he’s had great runs for JR Motorsports in the XFINITY Series and has had some good runs subbing for Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the Sprint Cup Series.

Busch was second in this session and Logano followed close behind in third. Points leader Elliott Sadler was fourth and Justin Allgaier was fifth.

Outside of rain in the second session, there were no major incidents during either session.

  • Erik Jones Wins at Chicagoland, Enters NASCAR XFINITY Series Chase as Top Seed

Erik Jones Wins at Chicagoland, Enters NASCAR XFINITY Series Chase as Top Seed

    By Reid Spencer/NASCAR Wire Service

JOLIET, Ill. – Kyle Busch opened the door, and that was all the invitation Erik Jones needed.

When Busch, the polesitter for Saturday’s The Drive for Safety 300 at Chicagoland Speedway, spun with a tire down while leading on Lap 182 of 200, Jones took full advantage of his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate’s misfortune.

The driver of the No. 20 JGR Toyota restarted sixth on Lap 187 after Busch brought out the eighth caution of the afternoon and quickly closed the gap on Elliott Sadler, who restarted second and grabbed the lead from JR Motorsports teammate Clint Bowyer, who had stayed out on old tires.

Jones caught and passed Sadler on Lap 192. Race runner-up Kyle Larson followed four laps later but couldn’t catch Jones before the finish. In the final four laps, Jones moved up the track to take Larson’s preferred racing line and crossed the finish line .392 seconds ahead of Larson, who brushed the outside wall on the final lap while trying to close in on the race winner.

“It was tough,” said Jones, who won for the second time at the 1.5-mile track and the fourth time in his rookie year. “I knew we were in a good spot on tires, but we pretty far back – think we restarted sixth there.

“I didn’t know if my Hisense Camry was going to have enough time to get back up to the front, but we had a really good restart and got clear to third and then just had to go chase Elliott down. It was a matter of time before we got around him. What an awesome day!”

With four victories this season, Jones enters the inaugural NASCAR XFINITY Series Chase as the No. 1 seed heading to the Chase opener next Saturday at Kentucky Speedway.

“It’s a lot of momentum,” Jones said. “I wish this was our first round right here. We’ll go into Kentucky definitely with a full head of steam and are due for another win there. Our mile-and-a-half program is great – it’s been great all year.

“To finally get a first mile-and-a-half win of the year – just looking forward to getting to Kentucky next weekend and try to chase down another one.”

Saturday’s event finalized the 12-driver Chase field, as Blake Koch and Ryan Sieg clinched the final two spots with finishes of 15th and 12th, respectively.

The full Chase field, in order of seeding, consists of Erik Jones, Sadler, Daniel Suarez, Ty Dillon, Justin Allgaier, Darrell Wallace Jr., Brendan Gaughan, Brennan Poole, Ryan Sieg, Ryan Reed, Brandon Jones, Blake Koch.

Sadler finished third on Saturday, followed by Suarez and Allgaier.

Larson recovered from a pit road speeding penalty to record his eighth top-five finish in 12 starts this year.

“I knew I could get the top (lane) going, but I knew when I got the top going, Erik would move up just when I got to him,” Larson said. “He did, and I tried to carry a lot of throttle off of (Turn) 2 and maybe get a run on him, but I got into the wall.”

Busch led 154 laps and recovered from his spin to finish 13th. All told, 11 different drivers led at least one lap, including the top eight drivers in the finishing order.

  • NASCAR Introduces Rules Updates for Chase

NASCAR Introduces Rules Updates for Chase

    By Kenny Bruce | NASCAR.com

NASCAR introduced rules updates for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup playoffs on Wednesday, giving competition officials the power to issue more stringent rulings on technical infractions involving post-race laser inspections and lug nuts.

The developments were announced just days before the series visits Chicagoland Speedway for Sunday’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 (2:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, MRN, SiriusXM), the opening event in the 10-race Chase playoffs.

Similar clarifications, where applicable, will also be in place for the inaugural Chase events in NASCAR’s XFINITY Series and Camping World Truck Series, which get underway in two weeks, at Kentucky and New Hampshire, respectively.

The updates allow NASCAR officials to strip race-winning teams of the benefits associated with a Chase victory, which include the automatic advancement into the next elimination round and any tiebreaker implications, should those teams fail the post-race lug-nut check or the post-race Laser Inspection Station (LIS) platform.

Previously, lug-nut infractions have resulted in a one-race suspension and a fine for the crew chief while LIS failures have carried a point deduction in the drivers’ and owners’ championship points, in addition to the crew chief fine.

Going into the Chase, post-race failure of the LIS platform now will be deemed a P4 level penalty if a vehicle’s rear toe measurements exceed the allowed measurements on both sides.

In the Sprint Cup Series, the first violation would result in an encumbered finishing position, the loss of 35 championship driver and owner points, as well as a three-race suspension and $65,000 fine for the crew chief.

In the XFINITY Series, the penalties would be the same, but the crew chief fine would be $20,000.

The LIS platform is not a part of the NCWTS inspection process.

The penalties will be the same as those for an LIS infraction if a vehicle is found to have 17 or fewer lug nuts in place following the completion of the event (in Sprint Cup, XFINITY or Camping World Truck).

“The changes are made to assure that we have a level playing field and make sure that there’s not a carrot out there for the team to have excessive violations when it comes to lug nuts and the LIS post-race measurements,” Scott Miller, NASCAR senior vice president of competition, told NASCAR.com. “As we worked with those penalties during the season we realized we probably needed to have a little bit more in place as Chase time rolled around.

“The Chase obviously changes a lot of scenarios for both NASCAR and the teams; it’s ramped up the intensity and there is a lot of scrutiny, as there is every week on everything (involving) technical infractions. This is really just a matter of us putting something in place so that should something happen, we have a means to effectively deal with it.”

Miller noted that the “encumbered finish” is already a part of the NASCAR rule book. “This just adds a little bit of definition to how we will use it moving forward,” he said.

NASCAR officials cracked down on lug nut penalties with new rules this spring, making sure the wheel is securely fastened on all five studs at a pit-road checkpoint after the race. At least five teams have been found in violation during post-race inspection, including those of drivers Kevin Harvick (Stewart-Haas Racing) and Kyle Busch (Joe Gibbs Racing).

The LIS platform has been used to measure cars’ chassis with precision since the start of the 2013 season. The majority of failures this year have centered on rear toe alignment.

Six Sprint Cup Series drivers and teams have been penalized this year for failing the LIS portion of the post-race inspection process — Kasey Kahne, Hendrick Motorsports No. 5 Chevrolet (Dover); Matt Kenseth, Joe Gibbs Racing No. 20 Toyota (New Hampshire), Brad Keselowski, Team Penske No. 2 Ford (Michigan),Kyle Larson, Chip Ganassi Racing No. 42 Chevrolet (Darlington), Ryan Newman, Richard Childress Racing No. 31 Chevrolet (Darlington) and Martin Truex Jr., Furniture Row Racing No. 78 Toyota (Richmond).

Miller said he expects the rules to remain in place for the 2017 season as well.

LIS failures during pre-race inspection result in written warnings, with the potential for lost track time after a team’s fourth violation.

Should an infraction involving post-race LIS or lug nut inspection occur during the championship race at Homestead for any of the three series, the finish of the team found to be in violation would not count toward the determination of the series champion, or for any other positions that might be determined via tiebreakers.

Busch is the defending Sprint Cup Series champion while Harvick was the first to win a title under the current Chase format, which debuted in 2014.

These latest changes were made in collaboration with industry partners. “It should be no surprise to anybody where we landed,” Miller said.

“As we convened with some of the team principals and competition guys, it became pretty obvious that we needed to do something like this.”

  • XFINITY Race From Richmond Becomes Kyle Busch Show

XFINITY Race From Richmond Becomes Kyle Busch Show

After qualifying 7th and not showing much speed in the weekend’s lone practice session, Kyle Busch was unstoppable after taking the lead during the first caution and won the 36th annual Virginia529 College Savings 250 at Richmond International Raceway.

Busch dominated, leading 197 laps. But Busch didn’t show a lot of speed until a lap 50 caution, where J.J. Yeley spun out Justin Marks on the frontstetch. Busch had a fast pit stop and took the lead, and outside of surrendering it to Erik Jones for two laps during green flag pit stops led the rest of the way.

It’s the 2015 Sprint Cup champion’s 84th career XFINITY Series victory and his eighth of the year. Busch has now won 167 national touring series races, 33 away from Richard Petty’s 200 mark. It is also Joe Gibbs Racing’s 13th win this season.

Jones finished second while Brad Keselowski took third place. It matches Keselowski’s best finish of the season (It’s his third, third place finish) while Jones got his 12th top five of the season. Elliott Sadler, the points leader, finished fourth in front of his hometown crowd while Justin Allgaier rounded out the top five.

Austin Dillon ended the night seventh after starting on the pole and leading the first 51 laps. Alex Bowman started second but fell to ninth by the finish while Ryan Reed clinched a berth in the first XFINITY Series Chase by finishing 11th.

There are four drivers who can still make the XFINITY Series Chase on points with one race remaining, with only two spots available. Blake Koch (11th) has a 23 point cushion while Ryan Sieg is close behind with a 20 point parachute. Dakoda Armstrong sits as the first driver out of the Chase while Jeremy Clements is 29 points back. If Armstrong, Clements, Ross Chastain, Ryan Preece, Ray Black Jr., BJ MCLeod, or Joey Gase can eke out a shocking victory, they will make the Chase while Koch’s advantage shrinks to just three over Sieg.

In addition to the lap 50 caution, there was another caution for debris at lap 165 for Brandon Brown’s team after an uncontrolled tire got out of the pit box.

Qualifying happened a couple of hours before the start of the race, and there was only one incident of note. Chris Cockrum, driving the No. 25 Chevrolet for Rick Ware Racing, leaked oil around the racetrack for a lap without realizing it, then outright blew the motor going into Turn one. It caused a somewhat lengthy red flag period in the session, and the No. 25 team essentially withdrew. Austin Theriault’s team, who DNQ’d, threw a No. 25 on the car and ended up starting the race instead.

  • Ryan Reed’s Passion to Win Equaled by his Passion for Diabetes Awareness

Ryan Reed’s Passion to Win Equaled by his Passion for Diabetes Awareness

DARLINGTON, S.C. — After a top-15 finish at Darlington Raceway, Reed is only two races away from cementing his place in the inaugural XFINITY Series Chase for the Championship. He’s cautious but optimistic about his chances, saying, “We’re not in it for sure yet but mathematically, we have a cushion. I feel pretty confident on making the Chase.”

Reed began the Darlington race in the 15th position, crossing the finish line in 13th place in the No. 16 Lilly Diabetes/American Diabetes Association Ford, after he went a lap down due to a caution that came out while he was on pit road.

Reed’s No. 16 Mustang featured a throwback paint scheme reminiscent of the red, white and blue Matador No. 16 that was driven by Bobby Allison in 1975. Allison, who captured five wins at Darlington during his career, also served as an honorary crew member for the team.

NASCAR artist Sam Bass, who was diagnosed with diabetes more than 20 years ago, helped design the paint scheme and was featured on the car as part of the “Drive to Stop Diabetes” program.

“It’s really cool, number one, to be able to drive the same car that Bobby drove. It’s a pretty amazing opportunity. But then also Sam Bass helped redesign it and he’s an artist in NASCAR and he also has type 1 diabetes like myself. So it’s pretty cool to be able to tie Sam into it and have that passion. Sam and I are pretty good friends so it’s been a really cool way to definitely honor the throwback weekend and also tie it into so many things that mean something to me.”

Ryan went on to credit Sam Bass with the original idea that was embraced by the team as well as their sponsors.

The choice to honor Bobby Allison was an easy one.

“I don’t know anyone in NASCAR that’s not a Bobby Allison fan,” Reed said. “He’s such a pioneer of the sport and helped shape it into what it is today. And for me, being able to come out here and make a living driving race cars, Bobby helped make that a reality for everyone that’s in the sport today. In that regard, I have a lot of respect for Bobby.”

Reed and Allison had the opportunity to talk about Darlington when the paint scheme was unveiled. They discussed how tricky the track was and how it could easily “bite you.” Allison obviously made a lasting impression.

“What a cool guy and amazing stories he has, a lot of history there,” Reed told me.

In his third full season in the XFINITY Series, Reed has proven his talent in a race car, with year-end rankings of ninth in 2014 and 10th in 2015. What may be more impressive is his determination to persevere under less than favorable conditions.

When Reed was 17 years old, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and told he could never race again. Devastated, but unwilling to give up his dream, he went looking for answers.

He found them with the help of Dr. Anne Peters who was based in Reed’s home state of California.

“Peters was the person who gave me hope that with hard work I could continue to chase my dream of being a professional race car driver. She put me on a strict diet and exercise regiment, which has allowed me to achieve the success I have had to date.”

In 2013, he was signed as a development driver for Roush Fenway Racing in the XFINITY Series and began a partnership with the Drive to Stop Diabetes program which is presented by Lilly Diabetes in collaboration with the American Diabetes Association. Reed’s commitment as an ambassador for diabetes awareness remains unwavering.

“Diabetes is tough,” Reed admits, “no one wants diabetes but once you have it, if you accept it and change your lifestyle, listen to your doctors and take it on head first, there are some things that can come from it that are good as far as lifestyle changes and realizing it doesn’t have to dictate your life. You can go out there and live a very fulfilling life and do the things you love to do despite having it.”

The XFINITY Series travels to Richmond International Raceway this weekend for the 25th race of the regular season. Reed is currently 10th in the driver standings.
