  • Kyle Busch Outduels Teammate Matt Kenseth for 75th XFINITY Win

Kyle Busch Outduels Teammate Matt Kenseth for 75th XFINITY Win

    By Reid Spencer
    NASCAR Wire Service

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Overcoming obstacles in the XFINITY Series is commonplace for Kyle Busch.

In Saturday’s Kansas Lottery 300 at Kansas Speedway, Busch brushed aside a pit road speeding penalty, a hole in the nose of his No. 54 Toyota, a pit stop that dropped him to seventh for the penultimate restart, an unwelcome green-white-checkered-flag restart and a teammate who had the fastest car for much of the afternoon.

The end result was Busch’s 75th XFINITY Series victory, extending his own record. Busch won for the third time at Kansas and for the fifth time in 20 starts this season.

The race also saw Chris Buescher add one point to his series lead over Chase Elliott. Though both drivers had issues — Elliott a wreck during qualifying that sent him to a backup car and the back of the field; and Buescher a pit road speeding penalty — Buescher won a drag race to the stripe to come home sixth to Elliott’s seventh and leads the standings by 27 points over the defending champion.

But the final 43 laps of the event were vintage Kyle Busch. Restarting seventh on Lap 157 after the seventh caution of the afternoon, Busch surged into second place in a single lap. For the next 28 circuits, he harried teammate and eventual runner-up Matt Kenseth before clearing his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate through Turn 4 on Lap 185.

Busch survived a green-white-checkered after Joey Gase’s engine blew and oiled the 1.5-mile track with five laps left. Picking the outside lane, Busch cleared Kenseth entering the first turn and pulled away to win by .607 seconds.

“I wasn’t sure we had enough for that 20 car (Kenseth) today, but there at the end of the race, the track was cooling down and certainly getting freer and it looked like Kenseth just was too loose,” Busch said. “And I was able to really get the gas down and drive real hard and had a good car to stick through the corner.

“This Monster Energy Camry was awesome, (crew chief) Chris Gayle and the guys did a fantastic job for me in getting me a really good piece there at the end to be able to battle with Matt, and it’s cool to end up in Victory Lane any day… I wasn’t sure how I was going to get the pass done, but fortunately, finally there I was able to do it.”

Kenseth suffered a loose-handling condition late in the race and couldn’t keep Busch behind him.

“It’s frustrating to get beat again,” said Kenseth, who has finished second in each of his last four XFINITY Series starts. “We were out front in Chicago and had the better car, but second is the (next) best place to finish, I guess.

“Kind of aggravating when you get beat, but we were too free at the end. I didn’t give Wheels (crew chief Mike Wheeler) good enough information on the tires. I did everything I could to hold off Kyle except for wrecking. Just couldn’t do it.”

Joey Logano finished third, followed by fourth-place Ty Dillon and fifth-place Regan Smith.

Busch would like nothing better than to duplicate his victory in Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Kansas (2:15 p.m. ET on NBC). After a 20th-place finish last Sunday at Charlotte in the first race of the Chase’s Contender Round, Busch could earn a spot in the Eliminator 8 Round with the ninth XFINITY/Sprint Cup weekend sweep of his career (including his three-series sweep at Bristol in 2010).

  • Atlanta Motor Speedway introduces “Perfect Race Weather Guarantee”

Atlanta Motor Speedway introduces “Perfect Race Weather Guarantee”

The 2016 schedule still hasn’t been released, but one track has both announced it’s date and a full “credit” for inclement weather.

Tuesday morning, Atlanta Motor Speedway announced that the NASCAR traveling circus of the Camping World Truck, XFINITY and Sprint Cup Series will return on the weekend of Feb. 26-28, 2016 following the 58th Daytona 500. The track has reduced the price of tickets by 15 percent, the cheapest being $39 and most expensive being $99.

The most notable announcement was the “Perfect Race Weather Guarantee.” It doesn’t mean that track General Manager Ed Clark acquired Destro’s Weather Dominator and will crank the temperature up to 100 (that’s for you G.I. Joe fanatics), but it will give fans options if they can’t make the race. Here’s an excerpt from the press release.

“The all-new policy offers fans options in the event that inclement weather prevents them from attending the race. If the daytime high temperature in Hampton, Georgia on Saturday or Sunday of race weekend fails to reach at least 50 degrees as observed by the National Weather Service, or if weather issues postpone the day’s activities to a different day and fans are unable to attend on the rescheduled date, fans who do not enter the admission gates on the day the event is held will receive an account credit for the full price of their tickets. Credits can be applied to any future AMS event or events in 2016 or the 2017 NASCAR Weekend.”

In other words, if the weather doesn’t go higher than penguin house or if mother nature decides to rain on us and you can’t make the race, you can use that credit for a free ticket to the 2017 NASCAR race weekend at Atlanta.

In addition, Atlanta Motor Speedway is offering three different ticket packages for the 2016 race weekend. Their “Good” ticket package, starting at $79, includes general admission seating for Sprint Cup Series qualifying on Friday, tickets to the XFINITY and Truck doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 for the Sprint Cup Series. Next is the “Better” package at $139. This package is comprised of everything included in the “Good” package plus a weekend FanVision rental and a pre-race pit pass for Sunday’s Cup race. The “Best” package at $179 includes everything in the “Good” and “Better” packages and $25 off any purchase greater than $50 at the AMS souvenir shop.

For tickets to the February NASCAR weekend of events at Atlanta Motor Speedway next season, call (877) 9-AMS-TIX or visit www.atlantamotorspeedway.com.

  • Dillon on Fire in Charlotte

    Dillon on Fire in Charlotte

CONCORD, NC – Austin Dillon was on fire at Charlotte Motor Speedway; at one point, literally. Dillon qualified his No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet on the pole for Friday’s Drive for the Cure 300 by edging fellow cup driver Kasey Kahne with a speed of 183.524 mph. During pre-race activities, one of the fireworks that were set off, misfired and landed on Dillon and his car, burning his fire suit. Dillon laughed it off and went on to win the race, which capped a sweep of both XFINITY races at Charlotte this year.

“I was actually praying, and the fireworks hit me in the back,” Dillon said. “I didn’t know if it was a sign from God or what. But it got me going right there with a firework in the butt.”

After the race, Dillon thanked his team and dedicated the victory to two friends who are fighting breast cancer.

“It’s pretty cool to say we’ve swept both races at our home track,” Dillon said. “We didn’t start the race very strong. I told Danny (Stockman, crew chief) we were really tight and needed to make some adjustments. He made great calls and took big swings at it. Those guys made this Rheem Chevrolet fast. We pulled away there at the end, it was great.

“This is a special win for us not only as a team but me personally. I know two people close to me that are battling breast cancer and this win is for them. It’s an honor to be able to bring home this trophy for them. I hope it brings a few smiles when they’re having a rough day.”

Kyle Busch appeared to have the car to beat, leading a race-high 102 laps. He also took the all-time lead in the XFINITY series at Charlotte with 1,288 laps led, breaking the previous record held by Mark Martin with 1,257.

However, he lost several spots during a lap 147 restart. As he tried to work his way back to the front, he and Kahne got into a battle for third place that saw both cars touch a number of times. Busch eventually got the spot, but Kahne drove deep into Turn 3 and got into Busch which sent him into the outside wall. Both cars were damaged in the incident, but Busch clearly got the worst of it. He pulled his car off the track, finishing 31st and left without commenting.

When asked about the incident, Kahne said, “Kyle got mad because he got into it with his teammate (Jones) off Turn 2 on the start. “That shuffled him back to where I was,” Kahne continued, “and I’m racing to try to get by him. He started beating on me down the back and on the front, and I overdrove Turn 3 and got into him.”

Erik Jones was a distant second, followed by Brad Keselowski, Daniel Suarez and Regan Smith. Series leader Chris Buescher finished seventh and extended his lead in the series to 26 points over Chase Elliott who finished ninth.

The NASCAR XFINITY Series travels to Kansas Speedway next Saturday for the Kansas Lottery 300.

  • JR Motorsports adds OneMain Financial, Elliott Sadler with 2016 Partnership

JR Motorsports adds OneMain Financial, Elliott Sadler with 2016 Partnership

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 2, 2015) – JR Motorsports announced today a key component of the company’s future with the addition of OneMain Financial and driver Elliott Sadler to its NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) program for 2016.  Sadler will compete full-time for JRM next season and pilot the OneMain Financial Chevrolet Camaro in pursuit of the NXS championship.

In addition to its season-long primary placement, OneMain Financial will also receive associate branding on all JRM team cars for the full season.  Crew chief duties and car number for the OneMain Financial Chevrolet Camaro are still being determined.

“We are very pleased to welcome OneMain Financial and Elliott into the JR Motorsports family,” said Kelley Earnhardt Miller, co-owner and general manager of JRM.  “Elliott has raced a few times for us in the past, and now together with OneMain Financial, we’re thrilled to put together a championship-caliber team for him in 2016.  Off-track, JRM is looking forward to developing a mutually beneficial partnership with OneMain Financial and one that will help further their brand.”

OneMain Financial has been helping people realize their financial goals and dreams since 1912. The company is a well-established sponsor in NXS competition and embarks on its 13th year in the sport and sixth year partnering with Sadler.

“We are delighted to continue our commitment to racing as one of the longest running primary sponsors in the NASCAR XFINITY Series,” said Mary McDowell, OneMain Financial CEO.  “To say we are excited about partnering with JR Motorsports in 2016 is an understatement. Not only will Elliott Sadler continue to represent our brand while driving for us again, but JRM has a number of unique platforms and assets which will prove valuable to our employees, customers and brand.”

A veteran racer from Emporia, Va., Sadler has 14 victories to his credit across NASCAR’s top-three series.  Sadler has been an NXS regular since 2011, twice producing runner-up finishes in the championship point standings (2011-12).  Along with 10 victories at the NXS level, he holds 66 top-five and 144 top-10 finishes with 16 poles.

“It’s an honor to be in the position to represent JR Motorsports and OneMain Financial on and off the track next season,” Sadler said.  “I’ve known Kelley and Dale Jr. a long time, and I respect their passion and desire to win in this business. I’m proud to partner with OneMain Financial and continue our longstanding relationship.”

Although 2016 marks Sadler’s debut as a full-time JRM driver, he’s certainly familiar with competing under the company’s banner.  In 2010, Sadler made four starts for JRM in NXS competition, earning a best finish of seventh at Michigan International Speedway.

  • Blaney Soars to Second Kentucky Win in XFINITY Series Overtime Showdown

Blaney Soars to Second Kentucky Win in XFINITY Series Overtime Showdown

    Sept. 26, 2015
    By Chris Knight

SPARTA, Ky. – Ryan Blaney would not be denied Saturday night at Kentucky Speedway.

In fact, Blaney may owe a pushing Regan Smith dinner after a green-white-checkered restart proved to be the saving grace for the driver of the No. 22 Discount Tire Ford Mustang, who won his second NASCAR XFINITY Series win of the season in Saturday night’s VisitMyrtleBeach.com 300.

Blaney appeared to be heading towards Victory Lane, but an attack from Ty Dillon on a restart with eight laps to go sent him from first to third.

Then, a caution waved with four laps remaining and reset the field into overtime.

“We were just even with the 3 (Dillon), and the 7 (Smith) gave us a good push [on the final restart],” said Blaney who captured his fourth career XFINITY Series win. “Luckily we were able to get a good [push] and just get a little bit of position on the 3 to kind of use up the race track and get in front of him. I knew once we were clear we had a really good shot at it.

“A great Discount Tire Ford Mustang. We were great all night. It was just a matter getting up the front. Clean air was so important.”

As for the next-to-last restart, which saw Blaney’s winning chances temporarily fall, momentum worked against him.

“Kentucky is such a great race track because you can see three or four wide racing in the first corner and as the leader you have to protect and I didn’t know where the 7 (Smith) was going, he kind of faked me out going to the top and that was able to open up the middle and it just lost all of our momentum.”

For Dillon, he was frustrated with his runner-up performance.

“First of all, I am disappointed for second, and that’s a good thing,” said Dillon. “I’m proud to be sitting here saying that. Earlier this year, we didn’t have that opportunity to say that very often. Man, it hurts when you’ve got a big lead with four to go – I don’t even know what the caution was for – but, that’s a stinger.”

Just before halfway Brennan Poole spun in Turn 1 collecting Harrison Rhodes and spewing liquid from Poole’s car putting the field under the red flag for cleanup.

The race was halted for 18 minutes and 27 seconds, with the field returning to idle conditions with the race resuming with 95 laps remaining.

Brandon Jones grabbed the lead on a busy restart and held it through the next caution. With rain in the area, Jones stayed out, while others pitted.

When racing resumed, Jones controlled the field for 16 laps until Blaney made the pass to retake the lead on Lap 128 and through green flag pit stops, set the tone for the finish of the final stand-alone race of the season.

Chris Buescher, who finished seventh, now leads Dillon by 19 points in the standings with six races remaining. Chase Elliott, who finished fourth, is third, 25 points out.
