Jeremy Clements Teams Up with Delaware Office of Highway Safety at Dover

Jeremy Clements Racing and the Delaware Office of Highway Safety (OHS) are teaming up at Dover International Speedway in the Hisense 200 Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, to remind fans to Drive Sober and Arrive Alive. The OHS is challenging fans to make smart choices and plan ahead when deciding how to get home after a party or happy hour.

Jeremy’s No. 51 Chevrolet Camaro SS Team Clements “Drive Sober” car theme and  message will be promoting alternative ways of getting home besides driving after drinking, such as taking a taxi, Uber, Lyft, calling a sober friend or taking public transit. Jeremy has two career Top 10s in 10 career starts at the Monster Mile with the last one coming earlier this year.

Race weekend at Dover Speedway the OHS will be reminding fans that driving under the influence of alcohol is not only dangerous, it’s illegal. The OHS will have an interactive display in the Monster Mile FanZone where race fans can pledge to either always drive sober or be a designated driver. Fans can test and compare their motor skills against Jeremy in various games such as simulated impaired cornhole and the impaired tricycle track. Jeremy Clements will also make guest appearances at the display to meet with fans and sign autographs. Prizes such as Team Clements Drive Sober T-shirts and lanyards will be given away to those fans who participate in weekend activities.

The OHS is now in its 15th year. Checkpoint Strikeforce is a six-month statewide enforcement campaign that features an increased number of DUI checkpoints and patrols every weekend from July 1 through Dec. 31. The goal of Checkpoint Strikeforce is to stop impaired driving throughout Delaware. Any driver who fails a field sobriety test and is found to be over Delaware’s Blood Alcohol Concentration Limit of .08; will face severe legal and financial consequences. There is no leniency for first-time offenders. In fact, just one DUI can change your life. The OHS wants everyone to drive safe and Arrive Alive. Visit www.DUIrealtime.com for public information on the campaign.

Team Clements is scheduled to be on track with the “Drive Sober” No. 51 machine Friday Oct. 2 for final practice from 1:30 p.m. – 3:25 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 3 for qualifying at 12:15 a.m. and take the Green Flag at 3:46 p.m. in the Hisense 200.

  • Kyle Busch Outruns Teammate Matt Kenseth for Chicagoland XFINITY Win

Kyle Busch Outruns Teammate Matt Kenseth for Chicagoland XFINITY Win

    By Reid Spencer
    NASCAR Wire Service

JOLIET, Ill.—In a race where teammates raced like archrivals to the checkered flag, Kyle Busch surged ahead of Matt Kenseth with a crossover move on the next-to-last lap and won the Furious 7 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series race by .791 seconds over his Joe Gibbs Racing stablemate at Chicagoland Speedway Saturday night. The two JGR cars were the clear class of the field, but after they swapped the lead three times on Laps 176 through 178, Busch pulled out to an advantage of more than one second over Kenseth. With Busch trying to save a half-lap of fuel, however, Kenseth closed the gap in the waning laps and roared past his teammate on Lap 199, as both drivers were trying to dodge the lapped car of John Wes Townley. With Kenseth powering his No. 20 Toyota deep into Turn 3 after making the pass, Busch was able to cross over and retake the lead to the inside as Kenseth lost momentum.

Busch pulled away on the final lap to win his fourth XFINITY Series race of the season, his fourth at Chicagoland and the 74th of his career, extending his own series record.

Busch’s car, however, was too low on all four corners when the ride height was measured during post-race inspection. NASCAR is taking the car to its tech center in Concord, N.C., for further evaluation. If penalties are warranted, they will be announced next week.

Darrell Wallace Jr. used fuel-mileage strategy to perfection in finishing third, coaxing 67 laps out of his last tank of gas. Paul Menard ran fourth, followed by Ty Dillon, who moved into second place in the series standings, trailing leader Chris Buescher (seventh on Saturday) by 25 points.

Defending XFINITY Series champion Chase Elliott ran 14th and dropped one position to third in points, 28 behind Buescher.

Busch thought he had control of the race when he passed Kenseth for the lead on Lap 178 of 200 and began to pull away.

“I thought when I got to him and I cleared him and drove away by a second-plus, it was over, and I said, ‘OK. Thank you—I can breathe a little bit,” Busch said. “Then he started running us back down, and I tried to go back to the top and I was loose up there again when I went back there.

“Just had to battle through there. He was right there, though… Once he lost his momentum off of (Turn) 4, it was over. That was some fun racing, though.”

Kenseth, who thought he had the faster car, was understandably disappointed with the outcome.

“I had the best car tonight, and I got beat by a better driver,” said Kenseth, who also would have preferred for Townley not to have been in the mix when the outcome of the race was decided.

“It would have been nice if he’d gotten the heck out of the way, I’ll tell you that,” Kenseth said. “Chase (Elliott) was very courteous. He was already a lap down, and he moved down and gave us the top because he knew that’s where we were racing…

“Clyde Torkel (a reference to Townley derived from the movie Stroker Ace), he just stuck it right between us. I got around him, and he passed me back when I was trying to race Kyle for the win. That was disappointing.”

Wallace’s third-place finish was a career best for the driver of the No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford, who is battling sixth-place finisher Daniel Suarez for Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors.

“I try not to let (the rookie contest) worry me too much, but I would say it’s good seeing me pass that 18 (Suarez) on the restarts every once in a while,” Wallace said. “As long as we’re finishing ahead of him, it will be a close battle all the way to the end.”

Suarez currently leads the points battle 251 to 225.

  • Jeremy Clements Chasing Best Season of his Career

Jeremy Clements Chasing Best Season of his Career

Jeremy Clements is in the midst of his best season since he began racing full-time in the XFINITY Series in 2011. He is currently 11th in the points standings, chasing Ryan Reed who is 66 points ahead in 10th place.

Eleventh place may not seem like anything to brag about until you realize that everyone ahead of him has Sprint Cup backing. Surrounded by names like Roush Fenway Racing, JR Motorsports, Richard Childress Racing and Joe Gibbs Racings, Jeremy Clements Racing is David to their Goliath.

This small organization is based out of their hometown, Spartanburg, South Carolina and is owned by Clements and his father, Tony. Another family business, Clements Automotive, provides the racing engines for the team.

Building their own engines cuts their costs and, as Clements explains, is “really the only reason we can race.”

Clements, driving his No. 51 Chevrolet, has eight career top-10s including a 10th at Dover International Raceway in May. He has also earned nine top-15s this year showing a consistency that has been missing in previous seasons. His previous best ranking at year end was 14th in 2012.

The improvement this year, says Clements, is because “We’ve had more sponsorship here and there to buy the things we need to make the cars better. We’re running the R07 engines this year that we built over the winter time, just running better stuff and not having parts failures.”

“It’s not like I’ve just started figuring out how to drive better,” he quipped, “our equipment is better.”

While most of their earnings are funneled back into the team, more sponsorship has enabled them to elevate the team to a more competitive level.

“We race off the purse and when we have more funding available, we use it to buy tires and for upgrades. Jim Sealy with US Petroleum and guys like AllSouthElectric.com, St. Clair Foods and  RepairableVehicles.com have helped us out a lot.”

“It’s a money game,” Clements continued, “and all the big teams are in the top 10 and to beat them is really hard to do. Eleventh is wonderful. All we can do is keep trying to improve and doing the best we can.”

As Clements works toward breaking into the top 10 in points, his competitive season has caught the eye of a new sponsor.

“We’ll have a big sponsor for Dover (International Speedway), the Dover DOT, the biggest sponsor we’ve ever had. It’s exciting and I’m looking forward to see what we can do there.”

Though family owned teams are rare in today’s NASCAR, Jeremy Clements Racing is proof of what can be accomplished with talent, determination and perseverance.

  • Chase Elliott Captures First XFINITY Win of 2015 at Richmond

Chase Elliott Captures First XFINITY Win of 2015 at Richmond

Chase Elliott won the 2015 Virginia 529 College Savings 250 after holding off pole sitter Kyle Busch in the final 20 laps. Elliott finally broke both a 22 race Cup driver winning streak at Richmond and a personal 39 race winless streak, gaining momentum on both a repeat championship and his ascension to Jeff Gordon’s 24 car next season.

Busch dominated early in the first 81 laps before losing the lead for good from Brian Scott. The rest of the race was led entirely by XFINITY series drivers, beginning with Brian Scott leading almost all of the middle portion. Scott led 62 straight laps before fading after lap 143. Elliott would ultimately take the lead on lap 167, and held it for the rest of the way.

Scott frustratingly finished third after leading 63 laps, while Joey Logano uncharacteristically quietly finished fourth. Erik Jones rounded out the top five.

One of the biggest stories of the night was Josh Berry. The JR Motorsports driver, in just his third start in the XFINITY series, constantly ran ahead of Cup drivers. A bad pit stop before the final restart doomed him to a seventh place finish. Berry has no more XFINITY starts planned but wants to compete full-time next season.

There were six cautions for 48 laps, one of which was a multi-car wreck on the very first lap between John Wes Townley, David Starr, Jimmy Weller, Joey Gase, Benny Gordon and Carl Long.

In championship points news, Chris Buescher, who finished 10th, continues to lead Elliott by 21 points, followed by Ty Dillon (-27 points) and Reagan Smith (-49 points). The all important Owner’s Championship features the Penske 22 (Logano this week) leading the JGR 54 (Busch this week) by 82 points.

  • Denny Hamlin Captures XFINITY Win at Darlington despite Pit Stop Miscue

Denny Hamlin Captures XFINITY Win at Darlington despite Pit Stop Miscue

Denny Hamlin won the 33rd Annual VFW Sports Clip Help a Hero 200 Saturday afternoon at Darlington Raceway, claiming his 14th series victory in 152 XFINITY Series starts. It marked his third victory and eighth top-10 finish in 2015.

Hamlin led 117 of 147 laps, dominating the race with a seven second lead on the field by Lap 20. Kevin Harvick was Hamlin’s biggest threat on the track but was only able to take the lead three times for 15 laps.  However, a mistake on pit road after a caution on Lap 72 left Hamlin short on fuel which meant he would have to pit early for the next pit stop.

Kyle Busch, who had started in 40th also proved to be a factor in the VFW Sports Clip Help a Hero 200. By lap 17 he had moved into the top 10 and at the end of the competition caution, Busch came out of the pits in fifth place.

Hamlin made his final pit stop on Lap 123 and with fresher tires was leaving everyone behind, forcing his rivals to pit. Daniel Suarez, who was competing for the Dash 4 Cash remained on the track with old tires, conserving fuel, and was able to hold the lead for 14 laps. But luck was on Hamlin’s side as the remainder of the race remained caution-free giving him enough time to overtake Suarez for the victory.

Kyle Busch also passed Suarez for second place giving Joe Gibbs Racing a 1-2-3 finish. The third place finish was enough for Suarez to win the Dash-4-Cash $100,000 bonus as the top finisher among those eligible.

After the race, Hamlin referred to not getting enough fuel as a “blessing in disguise.”

“We didn’t get the car completely full on the last stop. We had to short pit there,” he continued, “and with that short pit, I scraped the wall 10 laps before we pitted and I thought I had significant damage and almost a cut tire so it forced us to pit road early. Then the only kind of thing that kind of burns you there is getting caught on the racetrack when a caution comes out.”

“We were able to get through that. I didn’t think anyone could make it on fuel and then I saw those guys stretching it. The pace that we were running I knew it would be close,” Hamlin said.

“It was obviously high drama but, he noted, ”Joe Gibbs Racing obviously had pretty good odds there at the end of the race.”

Kyle Busch summarized the race, stating, “We passed a lot of cars today and kept it in one piece. Fought hard there at the end and just pit strategy kinda got mixed up a little bit there. Denny I guess was short on fuel, didn’t get it full the previous stop so stopped early and that won him the race. It got him away from all of us far enough that he could just kind of cruise there those final laps, didn’t really have to push hard and just kinda bide his time and  just allow us to catch him. There wasn’t enough time for us to catch him so we come home second.”

Kevin Harvick finished fourth followed by Chris Buescher in fifth. Buescher remains the XFINITY Series points leader, increasing his lead to 29 points over Ty Dillon who finished 15th. Chase Elliott is third in points, 35 behind Buescher after engine problems led to a 24th place result.

The NASCAR XFINITY Series heads to Richmond International Raceway for its next race on Sept. 11 with television coverage on NBCSN.
