INDYCAR NEWS AND NOTES – July 3, 2013

Today’s IZOD IndyCar Series, Firestone Indy Lights and Mazda Road to Indy headlines:

    1. Andretti hopes to add to family history at Pocono

    2. Sullivan welcomes Indy car return to Tricky Triangle

    3. Of note

    1. Andretti hopes to add to family history at Pocono: Before the June 25 manufacturer test session at Pocono Raceway, Marco Andretti hosted Andretti Autosport teammates Ryan Hunter-Reay, James Hinchcliffe and E.J. Viso plus Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan at his home in Nazareth, Pa.

It was a lighthearted time following eight consecutive weeks of on-track activity to close the first half of the IZOD IndyCar Series season.

“They are never serious at any point and time,” Andretti said of his house guests. “We’re smiling, joking and laughing all the time. That’s what life is about.”

There’s been a positive vibe within Andretti Autosport, too. Following up its 2012 championship with Hunter-Reay, it has been the dominant team through the 10 races with five victories, including a field-high three by Hinchcliffe. Hunter-Reay is nine points behind championship front-runner Helio Castroneves of Team Penske entering the July 7 Pocono INDYCAR 400 Fueled by Sunoco. Andretti is third and Hinchcliffe is fourth in the standings.

Andretti desperately wants to earn his third career victory, and doing so at his “home race” at Pocono Raceway would be special.

The Andretti family history at “The Tricky Triangle” includes Marco’s grandfather, Mario Andretti, winning the 1986 Indy car race in which his father, Michael, won the pole. Mario won the pole for the 1987 race shortly after Marco was born.

Andretti has eight top-10 finishes, but he said those results aren’t indicative of the strength of the No. 25 RC Cola team. Andretti pointed to his ninth-place finish at Iowa Speedway on June 23, where he was running among the leaders until the right-rear shock failed.

“We’ve been almost dominant the last two races, but had something go wrong,” he said of the Milwaukee and Iowa short ovals. “If we execute and everything goes right, we can win.”

    2. Sullivan welcomes Indy car return to Tricky Triangle: Danny Sullivan says that Pocono Raceway was made for IndyCars and vice versa.

Sullivan won the last Indy car race at Pocono Raceway in 1989 and is excited for the IZOD IndyCar Series’ first event at “The Tricky Triangle” on July 7 in the Pocono INDYCAR 400 Fueled by Sunoco.

“I think Pocono is an ideal track for IndyCars,” said Sullivan, who also won the 1984 race. “With all of the upgrades, improvements in safety, you should see a great return from the IndyCar Series.”

Sullivan holds the 500-mile race record of 170.720 mph average speed in the CART-sanctioned 1989 race on the 2.5-mile tri-oval.

“A great layout, and three distinctly different corners makes a good setup difficult,” Sullivan added. “Pocono used to be rough, but that added to the challenge. My races there were always close and competitive. Winning it twice was special.”

    3. Of Note: Dario Franchitti will be driving the black and orange No. 10 Energizer car for Target Chip Ganassi Racing at Pocono Raceway. … Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing’s Charlie Kimball will be featured in the July “Athletes Give Back” issue of Sports Illustrated Kids.

    ***

The next IZOD IndyCar Series race is the Pocono INDYCAR 400 Fueled by Sunoco on July 7 at Pocono Raceway. The race will be televised live at noon (ET) by ABC and broadcast by the IMS Radio Network, including on Sirius and XM Channels 211, www.indycar.com and the INDYCAR 13 App for most smartphones and tablets. The next Firestone Indy Lights race is the Pocono 100 at 4 p.m. on July 6 at Pocono Raceway. NBC Sports Network’s coverage of the race will be telecast at 7 p.m. (ET) on July 12.

  • Bobby Tolton finishes 16th and seventh at Sunset Speedway

Bobby Tolton finishes 16th and seventh at Sunset Speedway

To say the bad luck continued for Bobby Tolton would be an accurate fact as he would fail to start Saturday’s feature, while wrecking on the last lap of Sunday’s feature.

He would start the night off by finishing seventh in the first heat. The second heat would be where he would run into trouble as the clutch would break, causing him to miss Saturday’s feature. He would be credited with a 16th place finish.

Sunday would start off to a much better note as Tolton would finish fourth in both of his heats.

As a result, he would start 11th in the feature that night. He would avoid the first two wrecks to move up to the eighth position. However, he would have to go to the back of the field on lap four after going for a spin.

Tolton would begin to make his way through the field – avoiding trouble along the way – to move into the fifth position by lap 20.

Tolton wouldn’t finish the feature, though, as on the last lap, Barry Newman and Brad Pearsall would get together, blocking the track, collecting Tolton in their mess.

Special thanks to Eloquip, Engines from Hal, Knightwork Designs, Bolt-On Performance, Amsoil, Crazy Bill’s Paintball, Tri-Country Sandblasting, At A Glance Screenprinting, Black Magic Racing and Around the Howse Contracting for their support.

Photos from the night can be viewed on Bobby Tolton’s website at http://bit.ly/bobbytolton.

The next race for the OSCAAR Modifieds is Sauble Speedway on July 13th.

  • Sean Cronan finishes eighth and 11th in Don Biederman Memorial features

Sean Cronan finishes eighth and 11th in Don Biederman Memorial features

Sean Cronan would finish eighth and 11th in the pair of the features that made up the Don Biederman Memorial weekend at Sunset Speedway.

He would start off the afternoon by placing 11th in time trials, laying down a lap of 13.791 seconds.

As a result, he would line-up third in the third heat. However, he would not end up running the heat due to pulling on the track with a flat right front tire. As a result, he would have to run the b-main. He would finish third in the b-main to transfer to the a-main.

Cronan would start the feature in the 18th position and quickly beginning making up position, running 14th at lap 10. By the first caution at lap 17 for Maginnis and Owen getting together, he would be up to the 11th position.

However, trouble would strike Cronan, ending his progress, as he would go for a spin on lap 21 to bring out the second yellow. The restart had been a little messy, with contact made throughout the field. Cronan would restart the race at the back of the lead lap cars, ready to make his climb through the field once again.

By lap 37, two cautions later, he would be up to the 15th position. Another caution would fly on lap 45 for Glenn Watson getting into George Wilson. By that time, Cronan was running just outside the top 10 in 12th. On the restart, he would climb up into the top 10 – eighth – following an incident involving Charlie Gallant, Jeff Hanley and Todd Campbell.

For the final five laps, Cronan would keep himself solidly in eighth, finishing eighth for his first top 10 of the season.

As a result of his eighth place finish, he would start third in his heat on Sunday afternoon. He would avoid trouble and battle hard side-by-side for the lead for some laps, finishing second at the end.

As a result of his solid heat finish, Cronan would start fifth in the 50 lap feature later that night. He would slip back to sixth after being passed by Rob Poole on lap four. He would continue to run sixth till he was passed by Derrike Tiemersma on lap 35. He then get passed by Hanley on lap 36 to bump him back to eighth.

On a restart with nine laps to go, he would drop back to the 11th position after being passed by Andrew Gresel, George Wilson and J.R. Fitzpatrick.

Cronan would keep himself solidly in 11th to pick up his third straight top 15 finish of the season.

Special thanks to The Lockeroom Sports Bar and Grill, Spira Fire Protection, Women in Stride, Supercuts, Gunk Canada, Plumbtech Plumbing Inc., Speedy Auto Machine, Fox’s Bakery and Deli, Sturdy Power Lines, Bourque Transmission, Paul’s Auto Body, Sophie’s Place Restaurant and Home-Tec Exteriors for their support.

  • Kevin Cornelius finishes second overall in Don Biederman Memorial

Kevin Cornelius finishes second overall in Don Biederman Memorial

By: Ashley McCubbin/KDR Motorsports PR – After a pair of second place feature finishes over the course of the weekend, Kevin Cornelius would finish second overall in the Don Biederman Memorial.

On Saturday, he started the night off well, posting the second quickest time in time trials at 13.540 seconds, four tenths off of Dwayne Baker’s quick time of 13.503.

As a result of his time trialing effort, he would start on pole for his heat, where he would finish second behind Brandon Watson.

When it came feature time, the second-place time trial effort would put him on the outside of the front row for the green flag for the 50 lap feature.

When the green was dropped, Dwayne Baker would grab the lead ahead of Cornelius. Cornelius would run second all the way till the first caution at lap 17 for Shane Maginnis and John Owen getting together.

There’d be three other cautions that would follow over the course of the next 20 laps and each time, Cornelius was able to hold the second spot behind Baker, in front of Brandon Watson. Watson would get underneath of Cornelius for second at lap 42, though Watson then got loose causing him to slip back in line.

With five laps to go, there’d be a pair of back-to-back cautions. On the second of the two restarts, Watson did get underneath of Cornelius for second, while Gresel would get to the outside of Cornelius. Down the backstretch, contact would be made within the tight battle, causing Gresel to bounce of the wall. Heading down into turn threes and four, Cornelius was able to pull ahead of Watson and Gresel to keep the second spot.

Cornelius would hold on to second to score his best career OSCAAR feature finish and third top 10 in three features to that point (seventh at Sunset in May, fifth at Barrie).

“It is awesome,” Cornelius said of the finish on Saturday night. “I felt the last time that we were here we left something on the table so I really wanted to get back out here. I didn’t know that we were three-wide there. This is awesome.”

On whether he had anything for Baker, Cornelius said, “There was just nothing left in the tires. We are trying a different tire strategy than everybody else and I’m not sure it’s working. We were out of tires at about lap 2 so I was just trying to keep it out of the wall, keep my momentum up and keep the guys behind me.“

As a result of finishing second in Saturday’s feature, Cornelius would start on the pole for his heat on Sunday. He would go on to win the heat to pick up his second heat win of the season following a heat win earlier this month at Barrie Speedway.

He would once again start outside pole in the feature and be alongside Baker for the lead on lap one, though Baker would grab the lead off of turn four. Cornelius would run in the second position all the way to the first caution on lap 29 after Kyle Passer would get sideways off of turn four, making contact with the side of Glenn Watson, causing Glenn Watson to hit the outside wall.

On the restart, Cornelius would get by Baker to take the lead, before the caution flew a lap later for Brad Corcoran spinning. Cornelius would clear Brandon Watson on the restart to keep the lead and held it all the way till a caution with 10 laps to go for J.R. Fitzpatrick spinning.

On the restart, Brandon Watson would grab the lead from Cornelius as Cornelius would bounce the No. 17 Super Late Model off of the backstretch wall. The caution flag would fly once again three laps later as John Owen would run into problems.

On the restart, Brandon Watson wouldn’t go, giving Cornelius the jump. Cornelius would then slow up, causing Baker to get into the back of him, followed by everybody getting into each other behind them. The result would be Cornelius catching the front stretch wall with the left front corner while Baker would get spun around. Due to it being a false restart with Watson not going, they would give everyone their spots back for the restart.

The second attempt at a restart would be a go as Watson would grab the lead while Cornelius and Shane Maginnis battled side-by-side for second. Cornelius would clear Maginnis with six laps to go.

Cornelius was unable to get by Brandon Watson in the closing laps as he would finish second once again for his third top five and fourth top 10 of the season thus far.

Cornelius would make mention that the contact with the backstretch wall on the restart would cause the toe be knocked out.

“I’m not sure what happened there,” he added. “We had the restart there and the car just wouldn’t turn and Brandon got by us there. I had no choice. I had to take the outside. I couldn’t get the run off of the bottom that late in the race. I don’t think I made the wrong call, but man, should have won that one.”

Big kudos were given to Mike McColl for the changes made between Saturday night’s feature and Sunday night.

“That guy is a magician,” Cornelius said. “He and his guys were here again and made it a ton better. I mean, the 48 was just walking away from us last night and we stayed with him tonight so the changes they made were great. I can’t thank those guys enough. They put an awesome chassis underneath me. It’s up to me now to wheel it.”

The Don Biederman Memorial Champion was to be given to the driver that had the best average finish across the two days. Cornelius tied with Watson and Baker as each of them had an average finish of second. OSCAAR officials would use the finishing order from Saturday’s feature to determine who would get the crown. As a result, Dwayne Baker was crowned Don Biederman Memorial Champion with Cornelius second and Watson third.

Lastly, thanks to the fans that came out to the track both days for two fun filled days of racing, as well as the on-track autograph session. We appreciate your support.

Following Saturday’s feature finish, Cornelius spoke with OSCAAR TV’s Clayton Johns about how the night went. The video is available on OSCAAR’s youtube page, along with race videos that you can watch if you missed this weekend’s action (or want to relieve it). The next race for the OSCAAR Super Late Models is at Sauble Speedway on July 13th.

“Racing with the best of the best in Baker and Watson here, and I’m really excited to get back to Sauble,” Cornelius said. “It’s been a long time since I raced there. I got my start there.”

We hope to see everybody at Sauble in two weeks. :)

  • Baker Wins 15th Annual Don Biederman Memorial

Baker Wins 15th Annual Don Biederman Memorial

Stroud, ON – Dwayne Baker’s (No. 48 Zancor Homes) win on Saturday night at Sunset Speedway followed by a third-place finish Sunday night with the OSCAAR Super Late Models gave him his first career Don Biederman Memorial win.

For the first time in OSCAAR history, the series used 50-lap feature events on back-to-back days to determine the Biederman Memorial winner.

In becoming the 10th different Biederman Memorial winner, Baker earned an additional $1000 prize on top of the usual series payout. The weekend points fund, courtesy South Shore Services, McGunnegil Engine Performance, McColl Racing Enterprises, Stefko Racing Engines, and Sunset Speedway, also awarded an additional $500 to second place finisher Kevin Cornelius (No.17 Halton Crushed Stone) and $400 to third place finisher Brandon Watson (No.9 Shear Metal Products). The sponsorship allowed each driver in the field an additional payout of at least $200.

Baker’s dream weekend started Saturday afternoon when he earned the Knightworks Design Fastest Qualifier award in time trials with a lap of 13.503 seconds around the 1/3-mile oval and took home a $500 bonus as a result. The strong qualifying run locked the Stayner, Ont. driver in to the front row for Saturday’s feature where he would prove too tough to beat.

Cornelius earned an additional $250 as the second fastest outlaw in attendance, while Shane Gowan took home $100 as the Hard Luck qualifier.

Baker was unstoppable Saturday night, leading all 50 laps from his pole starting position. The veteran pilot was only challenged on a handful of restarts by second-place finisher Cornelius. Despite Cornelius’ best efforts, Baker simply had the car to beat.

“I’ve never had a car that good. It was a rocket,” said Baker. “We never really changed much from opening night. All we did was put new tires on it.”

Cornelius’ second-place finish was his first finish on the podium in his OSCAAR rookie campaign, which he said was a good boost to team spirit.

“Last time we were here, and even at Barrie, I felt we left something on the table,” said Cornelius. “Finishing second here feels like a win. I had nothing for Baker at all. He was on rails tonight. I’m happy with our finish.”

The track position benefitted Baker has a number of drivers waged war behind him.

John Owen’s (No. 2 Owen Performance Engines) night ended on lap 17 after he was hit from behind by Shane Maginnis (No.03 Budds GMC Cadillac) in turn three. The contact sent both drivers sprawling to the grass infield.

On lap 36, Mike Beyore (No. 54 Stemac/Millenium Crane) made contact with Gary Passer (No.13 Jenco Equipment) in turn two, which put Beyore in to the inside retaining wall. Beyore later explained the contact shifted everything from the car’s radiator and forward.

Beyore said he didn’t feel anything was intentional, but rather he was a victim of circumstance and bad timing.

The worst wreck of the night came five laps shy of the 50-lap goal when Charlie Gallant (No. 40P South Shore Services) hit the inside retaining wall on the front stretch. Gallant was touched coming off of turn four by Jeff Hanley (No. 70 Raylene Racing) which sent the veteran pilot spiraling towards the inside wall.

Gallant’s car was not in good shape as it was carried off the track. He was unable to repair the car for Sunday’s event.

Brandon Watson turned in an impressive showing to finish in the final podium spot. Andrew Gresel (No.81 Sauble Falls Trailer Park) drove from his tenth starting spot to an impressive fourth, while Derrick Tiemersma (No.7 Wayfreight) maintained his starting position to finish fifth.

Sean Cronan (No.8 Lockeroom Sports Bar/SuperCuts) earned the VP Racing Fuels Hard Charger award with an eighth place finish after starting 18th.

The drivers were forced to regroup for another 50-lap session on Sunday evening to determine the overall Biederman winner. After finishing first and second, respectively, on Saturday night, Baker and Cornelius were once again locked in to the front row for Sunday night’s feature.

After several incidents in the qualifying heats as drivers attempted to ensure a starting spot inside the top 12, the A-Main event started without issue. The first caution of the event didn’t fly until lap 29 when Glenn Watson (No.22 Line-X/Rival Office Solutions) took the brunt of a mix-up on the front stretch. Glenn backed in to the outside wall after contact with Gresel and Passer. The incident would end his night.

On the ensuing restart, Baker, who had led every lap to that point, faltered allowing Cornelius to take over the lead and Brandon Watson to fall in to the second spot.

A caution three laps later in turn four when Brad Corcoran (No.05) spun would give Baker a chance to regroup.

Cornelius, however, held his own on the restart as Baker was shuffled back to fourth when Maginnis grabbed the third spot.

Caution came out again on lap 40 when J.R. Fitzpatrick (No.27 JR Motorsports/Passer Racing) spun in turn two. Cornelius chose the outside for the ensuing restart with Brandon to his inside.

As the pair came off turn two, Cornelius tagged the outside wall, allowing Brandon to take over the lead.

Another caution at lap 43, would force the final restart of the night. However, as the field came to the green Cornelius jumped the start, but tried to slow himself forcing a handful of driver to spin and avoid contact. Since the green was not thrown, drivers were returned to their spots.

Brandon got the start he needed with seven laps to go to retain the lead, forcing Cornelius to settle for second on consecutive nights. Brandon would go on to win his third feature in four events to start the OSCAAR season.

“We definitely had to make a few changes from (Saturday) night,” said Brandon. “it was tough getting up there. A few restarts came in to play at the end there. It really helped us out and we were able to hold on for the last ten or so laps.”

Baker would hold on to the third spot after Maginnis hit the outside wall with four laps to go during a battle for the second spot and would not finish.

Since the top-three drivers finished in reverse order from Saturday night, all three held an average finish of two. Baker held the tie-breaker as the top finisher in Saturday’s feature.

“It’s probably the biggest race in Ontario. It’s nice to have my name on the trophy,” said Baker. “There’s a lot of good names on that trophy.”

“We had some bad luck on the restart (with 21 to go),” explained Baker. “The car was still good.”

Baker becomes the ninth different driver to win the Biederman Memorial in the event’s 15 year history. His name will go down as the first driver to win the prestigious event under the new format.

Tyler Hawn (No.42 Belford Haulage/Fox’s Bakery) was the night’s VP Racing Fuels Hard Charger after finishing ninth despite a dead last starting spot of 22nd.

The OSCAAR Super Late Model tour takes a two week break before returning to action for their only stop of the season at Sauble Speedway on July 13, 2013. The event at ‘the Beach’ always offers a solid car count and an electric fan atmosphere. Stay tuned to www.oscaar.ca for schedule information.

  • Demelo Wins First Career OSCAAR Feature

Demelo Wins First Career OSCAAR Feature

Stroud, ON – Justin Demelo (No.82 EMCO Waterworks) used a late race restart to get by Brent McLean (No.7 Bowmanville Home Building Centre) to earn his first career OSCAAR Modified tour win on Sunday night.

“It’s about time,” said an excited Demelo. “I was tired of finishing second.”

Demelo’s win followed a fifth-place finish in Saturday’s feature. The London, Ont. driver said the team tinkered with the setup, but the biggest advantage they held was tires.

“We put some new tires on for Sunday, whereas we didn’t have any tires for Saturday,” said Demelo.

McLean held the pole for the second night in a row and led until a caution with 21 laps to go gave Demelo his best chance to earn his first OSCAAR win.

Restarting on the outside, Demelo was able to power around McLean to grab the lead for the final eight laps. The outside line was the preferred line for many drivers all weekend long and Demelo attributed his success to making the car work in the top groove.

“Being confident on the outside definitely helped us this weekend,” explained Demelo.

The race got off to an ugly start when the field accelerated down the backstretch coming to the green flag, a number of drivers checked-up and Ryan Dick (No.88 Johnston Bros. Sand & Gravel) got the worst. The damage didn’t appear to be significant, but Dick was unable to start the main event as a result.

When the race did get to green, it only took one lap for disaster to strike. A three-car battle for second between Brian McLean (No.47 Bowmanville Home Building Centre), Davey Terry (No.14 Wasteco/Brennan Haulage) and Gary McLean (No.8 Industrial Design) ended badly when Terry got pinched to the bottom and Gary had nowhere to go but in to the back of the No.14. Terry was sent hard in to the inside front stretch wall.

Terry was shaken-up, but would be okay. His Wasteco Camry suffered the worst of the damage, while Gary’s No.8 took significant damage to the left-front of the car. Gary was able to return to the track after some quick repairs by crew chief Greg Gibson, but finished several laps down in 12th.

The second caution of the night came on lap four when Bobby Tolton (No.13 Amsoil/Knightworks Design) spun in turn one, but avoided any contact.

The race ran green from lap 10 until the lap 21 caution. During the 11 lap run, Demelo had battled his way to the front from his 8th-place starting spot to run second behind Brent McLean. Brent McLean was able to break away from Demelo during the run until he was reeled back in by the yellow.

The caution came following turn two contact between Brad Pearsall (No.1B Plaza Kia/Syracuse Nationals) and Barry Newman (No.1 Vipond Fire Protection). With Newman on the outside, Pearsall drove hard in to turn one attempting to take the third spot. Pearsall slid up the track and when the open-wheels touched, Newman was sent in to the outside wall. It looked as though most of the damage to Newman’s car was suffered by the right-front. Pearsall was able to finish.

Demelo didn’t waste any time on the restart, quickly pulling away from Brent and cruising to the victory over the final eight laps.

Brent McLean’s win and second-place finishes combined with the unfortunate results for Gary McLean should vault the young driver in to the points lead for the first time in his OSCAAR career.

The OSCAAR Modified tour returns to action on Saturday July 13 at Sauble Speedway for round six of the 2013 tour and another 30-lap A-Main feature event. Stay tuned to www.oscaar.ca for schedule information.

  • Brent McLean Wins Second Modified Feature of the Season

Brent McLean Wins Second Modified Feature of the Season

Stroud, ON – Brent McLean (No. 7 Bowmanville Home Building Centre) took his pole starting spot on Saturday night and never looked back, leading all 30 laps at Sunset Speedway en route to his second feature win of 2013.

The young driver from Conn, Ont. rattled off an impressive win at Sunset Speedway, leading by nearly a full straightaway prior to a pair of cautions on lap 24.

“Before that caution came out, we were on cruise control,” said McLean. “My dad was telling me how many car lengths we were ahead so we could stay ahead, but so we didn’t use up our stuff in case that caution came out.”

With McLean leading Brad Pearsall (No.1B Plaza Kia) and Gary McLean (No.8 McLean Industrial Design), Brent did not want to see the late race caution caused by a spinning Branden Bullen (No. 67 Alliston Transmission) in turn four.

Caution flew one more time on the ensuing restart when Chad Strawn (No. 77 Canadian Heroes), making his first career OSCAAR start, got turned around in turn one.

Brent explained although they didn’t want to see yellow, the team quickly formulated a plan under caution.

“I knew the 8 car and the 1B were going to be there,” said Brent. “I knew I had to get a little bit of a jump on the restart to get by them and use the track that I needed.”

“We got the jump there, and we ended up with the ‘W’,” added Brent.

Brent did exactly as he planned, getting a great jump on the restart to pull away from Pearsall. Barry Newman (No. 1 Vipond Fire Protection) used the restart to get in to the third spot, as he moved around Gary McLean on the preferred outside line.

Pearsall would hold down the second spot, but didn’t have enough laps left to track down the No.7. Pearsall’s No. 1B looked to be tracking down Brent prior to the caution as the car improved on the long green flag run, but lost the momentum once the yellow flew. Regardless, Pearsall earned his second podium finish in as many starts this season.

“It’s frustrating when you’re having problems, but it’s so nice to overcome them,” said Pearsall on his early season success after a dismal 2012 campaign. “As for running with these guys, I’m having a blast. Gary McLean, that was a blast to run with him. I’ve never really had a lot of chances to run with him.”

Newman would hold on to the third position over the final six laps, holding off Gary McLean who would finish fourth. Gary’s fourth-place result was his first off the podium this season. Justin Demelo (No.82 EMCO Waterwoks/Demar Aggregates) rounded out the top-five.

OSCAAR Super Late Model points leader Brandon Watson made his first OSCAAR Modified start in the George Woods-owned No.34 and finished sixth.

The fast-paced, clean event was good news for all drivers in attendance with a full race night scheduled for Sunday as well.

  • Tracy Hines Wins Midget Race at Pikes Peaks; Finishes Third in Silver Crown 100-Lapper

Tracy Hines Wins Midget Race at Pikes Peaks; Finishes Third in Silver Crown 100-Lapper

NEW CASTLE, Ind. — June 30, 2013— Tracy Hines hadn’t turned a wheel at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Colorado, since 2005, but that didn’t faze him as was victorious in the Honda USAC National Midget Series portion of the Rocky Mountain Classic at the one-mile oval on Saturday, June 28. He followed that up with another podium finish with the USAC Traxxas Silver Crown Series.

In qualifying for the 25-lap Honda USAC National Midget Series race at Pikes Peak, Hines was fourth-fastest, turning a lap of 26.989-seconds. He started on outside of the second row in the Parker Machinery/Powered by Toyota Spike and ran among the top-five for the duration of the race. Hines was third with two laps to go when leader Kyle Hamilton ran out of fuel and second-place running Darren Hagen got boxed in, allowing Hines to take the lead on the high side of the track. He wouldn’t look back, powering to his first Honda USAC National Midget Series win of the season.

“These races are definitely never over until the checkered flag comes out and that’s why you have to drive every lap as hard as you can, because you never know what could happen,” said Hines. “It always feels great to win. I’ve been pretty fortunate over the years at Pikes Peak and have a good handle on the race track and the set-up it takes to be fast and run up front. It’s a long trip out to Colorado, but when you pick up a win, it makes that long drive worth it.”

The native of New Castle, Ind., started on the outside of the front row for the 100-lap USAC Traxxas Silver Crown Series event, after qualifying second with a lap of 25.687-seconds. Hines took the lead at the drop of the green flag from pole sitter Kody Swanson. He would lead the first four circuits, before Brian Tyler got around him to take the point. Hines would fall back to sixth just prior to the halfway point of the 100-lapper, before working his way back forward to finish third in the Lightfoot Racing No. 16.

“We had a great starting spot on the front row and took advantage of that at the beginning of the race,” he shared. “A lot can happen over the course of 100 laps, especially as the fuel burns off. Later in the race the car was a little different than it was at the start, but to come away with a podium finish, you can’t be upset with that, especially after the trouble we had at Gateway (Motorsports Park) a few weeks ago. It was good to get a solid finish.”

Hines is currently fourth in the Honda USAC National Midget Pavement Championship standings, just six markers out of the top spot. The series returns to action on July 27 at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, with the running of the Rich Vogler Classic. In the USAC Traxxas Silver Crown Series standings, the 2000 series champion is also fourth, only four markers out of third and 26 behind the point leader. The next USAC Traxxas Silver Crown Series race is slated for July 27 at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. Hines will be back at the track this week for three Honda USAC National Midget Dirt Championship events, along with a race for the USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series.

“It’s that time of the year when we are it just about 24/7,” Hines explained. “If we are not at the track we are in the shop getting cars ready for the next race. We have three midget races on the dirt this week and a sprint race as well, so we’ll certainly stay busy. As a driver, the more you race the better you feel and you can get into a good rhythm and keep it.”

  • Kimmel ties ARCA record at Winchester with 79th win

Kimmel ties ARCA record at Winchester with 79th win

WINCHESTER, Ind. (June 30, 2013) — Frank Kimmel was a bundle of emotion Sunday after he tied Iggy Katona’s ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards record for career victories with his 79th checkered flag, in the Herr’s Chase the Taste 200 at Winchester Speedway.

“Every once in a while you have one of those near flawless days,” the 51-year-old Kimmel said after a long post-victory celebration. “This was one of those days for us.”

It was a remarkable day for the Clarksville, Ind., native and his ThorSport Racing team, winning for the third time of the season in his No. 44 Ansell / Menards Toyota and the sixth time at Winchester. Kimmel led 158 laps of the 100-mile, 200-lap event and at the end, had to hold off a hard challenge from teenager Austin Wayne Self in the AM Technical Solutions Dodge, who finished a length away.

“He had a fast car,” Kimmel said. “But I knew if I didn’t make a mistake, held my line and stayed in the middle and didn’t spin out or something that he would have a hard time passing me.”

Kimmel took advantage of his points lead, which grew to 175 points over Mason Mingus, who was involved in an accident while leading and fell to 12th; to start on the pole when Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell was rained out on Saturday.

Kimmel led the first 106 laps after the race started under the green-and-yellow flags as track drying was completed. The hot conditions caused his car’s handling to change, but it was at its best in the end.

Mingus finally tracked down Kimmel and made the pass for the lead on lap 107, but got caught up in a lap 128 multi-car crash in Turn 2. From there, Kyle Weatherman inherited the lead, then pitted for four tires, as did all of the lead-lap machines, including Mason Mitchell, who won the race off pit road.

Kimmel came out on the tail-end of the lead lap cars after a lengthy pit stop for a missed lug nut. Mitchell led for 15 laps until Kimmel took over the lead for good on lap 149.

Kimmel was presented a framed photo collage by ARCA Racing Series officials in Victory Lane, commemorating the 79th win. Kimmel said he started to think about win No. 79 just before the end of the race.

“It crossed my mind, but then I told myself not to think about it too early,” Kimmel said. “When I saw the checkered flag, it was a sort of a flood of emotion. It is a big deal.”

Kimmel got his first ARCA Racing Series victory in 1994, also on a half-mile track, at Toledo Speedway.

“This is really something to enjoy,” Kimmel said. “There were some family and friends here. It’s Indiana, my home state. Any win at Winchester is great, but this one I’m really going to enjoy.”

The ARCA Racing Series will next travel to Chicagoland Speedway for the July 21 ActivArmr 150.

The Herr’s Chase the Taste 200 from will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network at 11 p.m. Aug. 1, the first of several tape-delayed ARCA short-track events this season.
