  • Matt Merrell Hopes To Breed The ‘Win’ In Win-Tron Racing At Chicagoland

JOLIET, Illinois (June 2, 2011) – Anxious. That is probably the best word to describe Matt Merrell lately. The driver of the No. 32 Champion Oil Toyota Camry is anxiously awaiting his shot at triumphing in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards. He’ll have another shot Saturday at Chicagoland Speedway for the running of the Messina Animal Wildlife Stopper 150.

Merrell, the Portland, Texas native has been enjoying a stellar season which has consisted of three top-fives, four top-10s and five top-15 efforts. After tacking a road course for the first time two weeks ago at New Jersey Motorsports Park, round six of the 2011 season will once again yield a new track for the Win-Tron Racing development driver.

While the former USARacing Pro Cup Series standout has competed at some of the series’ most signature tracks like Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway and Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, he has little experience at the likeable cookie-cutter mile and a half speed plants. With one prior start at Kentucky Speedway, a facility similar to Chicagoland Speedway, Merrell is eager to get on the track and put his Mike Chafee-led No. 32 Champion Oil Toyota Camry up front.

“I may never have been to Chicagoland, but I have one of the best teams in the ARCA garage that can help me adjust real quick,” said Merrell, who currently occupies third in the championship chase. “The team had a strong run last year and I would like nothing more than to get some redemption on our last lap bad luck at New Jersey and reward ourselves with a victory lane celebration.”

Knowing that Chicagoland offers a perfect opportunity to gain some ground in the championship standings, Merrell is hoping that his night in Chicagoland will be imitating a night in Las Vegas after successfully striking rich at the Blackjack table.

“I’m just ready to win,” offered Merrell. “I feel like we’ve had our chances a couple times this year but different circumstances have kept us from putting a period to one of our biggest goals to the season. I want the win for these guys on this Win-Tron team who continue to stand behind me and give me 110 percent every single race. It also would incredibly satisfying to take our Champion Oil Toyota Camry to victory circle for their first time. They’ve been a great supporter of this team and I continue to be appreciative of their confidence in my driver ability.”

Nate Thiesse, co-owner of Win-Tron Racing offered his thoughts on Saturday’s race. “We’re all looking forward to Chicagoland. Over the years, we’ve enjoyed much success there and we expect nothing less this weekend. Time and time again, Matt has raised the bar for our expectations from him and undoubtedly, I know he’ll impress us even more on Saturday night.”

The first intermediate contest of the year signifies the fifth race that Champion Oil will heed the role as the primary sponsor for the Lakeville, Minnesota-based team. Headquartered in Clinton, Missouri Champion Oil, a division of Champion Brands LLC produces and blends more than 300 products including fuel, oil and engine additives and lubricants for the automotive, heavy truck, agricultural and specialty markets.

Merrell will make his 19th career start in the ARCA Racing Series presented Menards at Chicagoland Speedway this weekend. In his previous 18 outings, Merrell has eight top-fives including runner-up finishes of second at Berlin (Mich.) Raceway and Pocono (Pa.) Raceway (August) in 2009 and 10 top-10s. His best start position for Win-Tron Racing occurred at the tricky triangle of Pocono (Pa.) Raceway where he qualified his No. 32 CollinsHope.org Dodge Charger second in June of 2009.

The Messina Animal Wildlife Stopper 150 (100 laps / 150 miles) is the sixth of 19 events on the 2011 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards schedule. The 11th ARCA event held at Chicagoland Speedway is a two-day show. Practice begins Friday, June 3 with a one hour and twenty minute practice session planned from 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Menards Pole by Ansell qualifying is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 4. The field will take the green flag shortly after 5:00 p.m. The event will be televised same-day delayed on SPEED beginning at 10:00 p.m. CST / 11:00 p.m. EST. CORNELIUS, N.C. — No. 00 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota driver Brett Moffitt racesSaturdayat Bowman Gray Stadium. Moffitt tested at the 1/4-mile stadium in May witheight-time modified track champion and MWR suspension manager Tim Brown. Moffitt, a Grimes, Iowa native,  leadsthe K&N Pro Series East standings after victories at Greenville-Pickens and Iowa Speedways in 2011. Moffitt leads the Toyota contengine of drivers that have won all four events in the East Series. Last weekMoffitt participated in “The Next Nine” at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte—two media days focused on promoting NASCAR’s next top drivers.

    MOFFITT QUOTES

BOWMAN GRAY STADIUM: “We’re really looking forward to going to Bowman Gray. We don’t really know what to expect going there because our series has never running a race there before, but our car was really good at the test a few weeks ago.  We just focused on getting the car to turn in the middle of the corner and have decent forward-drive off. I think it was very useful being able to go to that track to test and get that experience. Personally, I learned a lot on how to get around there. Tim Brown came out to help us a bit and I have to thank him for that. We learned a lot and we are hoping to go back and use all of that information.”

NEXT NINE: “The Next Nine was a really cool event we did at the NASCAR Hall of Fame for a few days last week. It was a great opportunity for fans to come out and get autographs. It was also a great opportunity for us as drivers to get media experience and get our names out there a little bit more. It was fun for me and I was glad to be chosen as one of the nine drivers NASCAR invited to the event.”

TOYOTA DOMINATION: This year the Toyota cars are running really strong in the K&N Pro Series East. They’ve won every race so it’s a good start to the season for them. I know we couldn’t do it without their backing. They’ve provided us with a strong engine and it’s shown on the track with our two wins. Hopefully our MWR team can continue on that success for them this weekend.”

  • Chad Hackenbracht; CGH Motorsports Look For More In Windy City

JOLIET, Illinois (June 2, 2011) – – Still thriving on their first career top-10 performance at New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP) in the most recent ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards race, CGH Motorsports’ pilot Chad Hackenbracht and his family-owned team head to Chicagoland Speedway this weekend looking to continue their uphill season climb.

After embracing some tough luck in the first and third race of the season, the last two ARCA races have seen a tremendous breakout for the Mooresville, North Carolina-based team giving the New Philadelphia, Ohio some much needed momentum for this weekend’s Messina Animal Wildlife Stopper 150.

The team also returns to the “Windy City” looking for vengeance after a promising run was halted when a cut tire saw a top-10 run result in a disappointing finish. The cookie cutters mile and a half tracks were also a strong point for the CGH Motorsports team in the qualifying department where they delivered 11th and ninth place starting positions in the final two 1.5-mile tracks of the year.

“I cannot wait to get back to Chicagoland this weekend,” said 19-year old Chad Hackenbracht. “The team has been steadily preparing for this race. I feel this place owes us one after our bad luck there last year.”

Despite the Holiday on Monday, it’s been an extremely busy week for the CGH Motorsports team. The team departed North Carolina on Wednesday afternoon and headed to Winchester, Indiana to test at Winchester Speedway in preparation for the short track event later this month.

“We felt like this was a prime opportunity to go to Winchester,” Hackenbracht explained. “Everyone saw how much good the testing did us at Salem, so we knew that we needed to do the same for Winchester, especially after how intimidating everyone says the track is.”

But, before the 2008 National Asphalt Legends champion can focus on the Winchester ARCA 200 presented by Federated Auto Parts on June 25, he knows has to keep his momentum building in this stretch of four consecutive races, especially after climbing into the top-10 after their outstanding performance at NJMP.

“We’re not done yet,” offered Hackenbracht in regards to his recent uphill swing in their chase for the championship. “I know we still have a long way to go, but we’re not going down without a fight. This team is tough and full of heart. A good run on Saturday will be the key to continuing on success on track.”

CGH Motorsports is actively seeking additional marketing partners for the full 2011 ARCA Racing Series schedule. Single, multi and full-season placements are available on the team’s No. 58 entries. Interested parties are urged to contact Jordan Dahl at 570.234.5449 or

  • Maryeve Dufault; Tony Marks Racing Ready For Chicagoland

JOLIET, Illinois (June 2, 2011) – – ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards Rookie of the Year contender Maryeve Dufault and her Tony Marks Racing (TMR) team will make their inaugural intermediate track debut Saturday afternoon when she takes the green flag in her No. 12 VR-12 / Dodge Motorsports Dodge Charger in the Messina Animal Wildlife Stopper 150.

Currently sitting 11th in the ARCA championship standings, the TMR is focused on having a solid run that will only propel the team’s confidence and hopefully vault the freshman team into the top-10 in their quest to run for a championship.

Thus far, Dufault has experienced her fair share of ups and downs, but with that being expected for any rookie driver and team in their inaugural season, the Mooresville, North Carolina-based team continues to march on with their head held high.

While the team did not participate in the recent open-test at Chicagoland Speedway, the Sorel, Quebec Canada native is relying on the wealth of experience from her team to guide her towards the front in the sixth race of the season.

“I’ve been anxious to get back to a bigger track, because I really enjoy competing on them,” said Dufault. “I’ve been learning as much as I can about Chicagoland by watching old races and talking to other drivers. I know I’m going to learn a lot this weekend – but I know that we’ll have a fast No. 12 VR-12 / Dodge Motorsports Dodge Charger which hopefully should ease our learning curve a little bit.” Coming off a respectable finish in her ARCA road racing debut, Dufault is anxious to have some luck on her side and show how potent her TMR team really is.

“This is a great operation with a lot of great support,” sounded Dufault. “VR-12 and Dodge Motorsports have poured their faith and trust in our young team to go out there and produce good finishes. We’ve had those but we’re looking for more. Hopefully Chicagoland will be a race that we can find ourselves competitive right out of the box and earn our first top-10 of the year.”

For car owner Tony Marks, the continued trust of his leaders at TMR and his confidence of Dufault have him thinking extremely positive for Saturday’s race.

“We’re looking forward to our first mile and a half track this weekend,” said Marks, a racer himself. “The whole team has been focused on making sure we go to Chicagoland with a mission to show that our team is capable of running up front and staying there. It will be another weekend of learning for us, but in the end we’re hoping for a great finish for VR-12, Dodge and all those who support TMR.” The Messina Animal Wildlife Stopper 150 (100 laps / 150 miles) is the sixth of 19 events on the 2011 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards schedule. The 11th ARCA event held at Chicagoland Speedway is a two-day show.Practice begins Friday, June 3 with a one hour and twenty minute practice session planned from 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Menards Pole by Ansell qualifying is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 4. • Gus Dean Making Noise On And Off The Race Track

BLUFFTON, South Carolina (June 2, 2011) – – Quietly Gus Dean has been making a name for himself in 2011. Competing in a mixture of Late Models and the Pro All Star Series (PASS) has seen the Bluffton, South Carolina native show maturity and patience while learning the ropes of some of America’s stoutest short track competition.

In addition to the wealth of knowledge he is digesting in the race car, Dean has also been hitting the books hard back at home which included not long ago taking the Scholastic Assessment Test, otherwise known as the SAT.

While the PASS South Series was taming South Boston (Va.) Speedway, Dean elected to stay focused on his academics. The hard work paid off when Dean received a whopping score of 1587.

With a welcome boost, Dean participated in the most recent PASS event at the Motor Mile (Va.) Speedway this past Saturday night. Guidance and coaching from USARacing Pro Cup Series driver A.J. Frank allowed the youngster to continue to shine during the event which resulted in a lead lap 10th place finish.

Itching for more, the Gus Dean Racing team will head to Orange County (NC.) Speedway (OCS) this weekend for the running of the Orange Blossom Special 125 in his familiar No. 56 Whirlpool Cooling and HeatingChevrolet Impala.

To the 16-year old’s advantage he has plenty of experience at the North Carolina bullring. The tight and treacherous short track is the site of Dean’s first of two wins in the Allison Legacy Series. Now, Dean is hoping to rekindle the magic of those nights with a Late Model win on Saturday, June 4.

“It’s been a good couple weeks,” said Dean. “It’s always hard to give up what you love to do (racing) to hit the books but when I opened the envelope and saw the SAT score I knew I made the right decision. That push carried over to the race at The Motor Mile and I know we can definitely continue our momentum at Orange County.”

The former American Kart Racing Association’s Junior II National Points Series champion continued, “A.J. (Frank) and the boys really don’t receive enough credit. They are the ones that help make this No. 56 Whirlpool Cooling and HeatingChevrolet Impala a rocket ship when the green flag drops. I’m just the lucky one that is able to drive. I know the entire team with our past success at OCS feels that we have a good of a chance as anyone Saturday night to take our No. 56 Whirlpool Cooling and HeatingChevrolet Impala to victory lane.”

Frank has been equally impressed with his pupil’s performance.

“I can’t say enough about Gus,” boasted Frank. “It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with him. He really is adapting to these heavier cars well. With each race Gus learns something new which shows with his performance on the track. Everyone is eager for Orange County this weekend and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate Saturday night other than in victory lane.”

In addition to PASS South Series competition, Dean and Co. will run in the Late Model (LM) and other Super Late Model (SLM) events across the Southeast all year long.

  • CHAD MCCUMBEE KICK STARTS THE SUMMER AT CHICAGOLAND SPEEDWAY

ModSpace No.1 Ford Looking to Heat Up the Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 150

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 31, 2011) — The Chicago Bears, Bulls and Cubs have their big games in Chicago, and ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards’s local presence is located 40 miles southwest of downtown in Joliet.

As the summer heats up, Chad McCumbee and the No.1 ModSpace Ford for Andy Belmont Racing (ABR) is getting ready for his own big game – Saturday night’s Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 150 at the Chicagoland Speedway.

“Our goal is to maximize all we can get this weekend,” McCumbee said. “We are going to approach Chicagoland Speedway like any other weekend we have be approaching this season. Hopefully now that we have a top-five finish under our belts, repeating that performance will come easier. I want to keep that momentum rolling and that is what it takes to win a championship.”

McCumbee qualified seventh in last year’s race, but a crash on the sixth lap resulted in a disappointing 33rd-place finish. The NASCAR veteran was able to notch a seventh-place finish in 2005 after qualifying second in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and hopes to use that as experience to build on for a possible trip to Victory Lane this Saturday as well as to continue building momentum for the rest of the season.

As the ARCA Racing schedule hits the first intermediate track of the season Saturday, the ABR team has prepared a Roush chassis nicknamed “Barney” for the 100-lap event.

Based on past qualifying performances at the track located south of the “Windy City,” team manager Andy Belmont says he likes his team’s chances heading into the sixth stop on the ARCA Racing Series schedule.

“We feel like our team has some unfinished business at Chicagoland Speedway,” Belmont said. “We were pretty good last year, but we got taken out in an early race incident. Now, we are looking for redemption with our car Barney.”

In preparation for his third career start in the ARCA Racing Series at Chicagoland Speedway, Memorial Day Weekend was not an off-weekend for the series regular McCumbee. The Supply, N.C. native raced in the SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup event at Lime Rock Park as part of the Grand-Am Road Racing Series Memorial Day Classic. Making his debut in the No. 29 ModSpace/Mazda MX-5, McCumbee finished eighth on Saturday and fifth on Monday in his first weekend of MX-5 Cup competition.

““ModSpace is excited to see Chad McCumbee back on a speedway after his podium finish at New Jersey Motorsports Park,” William Mann, the director of motorsports for ModSpace said. “Andy Belmont Racing and the No.1 ModSpace Ford team continue to work hard and are getting great results.”

“We are going back to this track with a lot of confidence,” McCumbee said. “Hopefully we can open up our intermediate (track) program with a good finish.”

McCumbee enters Saturday night’s Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 150 at Chicagoland Speedway fifth in the standings and 185 points out of the lead. With four top-10 finishes this season, including a top-five at the ModSpace 150 at New Jersey Motorsports Park with a third-place finish, McCumbee is looking to continue the growing momentum.

The Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 150 gets underway at 5 p.m. ET on Saturday with live coverage provided by SPEED. The ARCA Racing Network will cover all the on-track activity for the ARCA Racing Series with live streaming audio and scoring of practice, and qualifying at http://arcaracing.com/ ARCAracing.com.

  • Spraker Racing Announces K&N Berth For Martinsville Speedway President Campbell

Spraker Racing Announces K&N Berth For Martinsville Speedway President Campbell

    [media-credit name=”Spraker Racing Enterprises” align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]
No. 08 Mountain Dew Chevrolet Impala driven by Martinsville (Va.) Speedway President Clay Campbell)
MOORESVILLE, North Carolina (May 31, 2011) – – Spraker Racing Enterprises (SRE) formally announced today that Martinsville Speedway president Clay Campbell will drive the remainder of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East (NKNPSE) schedule beginning with this weekend’s Army Strong 150 at Bowman Gray (N.C.) Stadium.

Campbell will drive the No. 08 Mountain Dew Chevrolet Impala as he attempts his third career NKNPSE start on Saturday, June 4. The Pepsi-brand soft drink will carry its signage for the remainder of the year with Spraker Racing Enterprises owner Jeff Spraker calling the shots as crew chief.

“We are very humbled but yet excited about this announcement,” said Spraker Racing’s Jeff Spraker. “Clay undoubtedly has a passion for racing and this opportunity for us to pair with him and Mountain Dew is huge. We’re eager to advance Clay’s program to a full-time effort and we’re hoping to find some great success on and off the track with this new program.”

The 51-year old Campbell is eagerly excited about the opportunity to pair with Spraker and his team.

“It’s truly been a dream come true to drive for Spraker Racing Enterprises this year,” said Campbell. “I feel Jeff and I have a lot in common in that we both grew up in this sport. We both have a passion and love for racing which really aligns our thought process perfectly. When I first started looking to get into the K&N Series, everyone told me to go talk to Jeff Spraker. I think that says a lot. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him and Sue (Spraker, wife). I can say this, if he tells you something, you can take it to the bank.”

When Campbell was asked how a now-full time driving role may affect his duties at the legendary Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, he offered this explanation.

“The K&N Pro Series East schedule fits nicely into my work schedule at Martinsville Speedway. Most of the races are in the summer months and our big races at Martinsville are early in the year and late in the year. I’ve been driving late model stock cars in the summer months for a long time so now I’m just taking it another step up and traveling a little more. It doesn’t interfere at all with my day job though. In fact, I hope it works to my advantage by getting Martinsville Speedway some more attention.”

    Spraker agreed with Campbell’s sentiments.

“The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East schedule works well for a lot of different reasons,” Spraker said. “Not only is it a great developmental series that races on some of NASCAR’s most ideal race tracks but it’s schedule offers a lot of flexibility to allow someone like Clay to focus on some of the bigger items off on the race track. We’re going to have everything taken care from a competition side, so all he has to do when he shows up at the track is drive.”

Mountain Dew, a long-time fixture in the NASCAR community will continue its relationship with Campbell from a business standpoint at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway but now leans on a new enterprise to back his racing endeavors.

“We couldn’t be more pleased than to have Mountain Dew come on board as our sponsor. For so long that Mountain Dew logo was so iconic in this sport and to have them on our car is just phenomenal! The fine folks at Pepsi have been associated with me and Martinsville Speedway for a long time and I’m just thrilled they will now have their colors on my race car,” sounded Campbell.

With no prediction and guarantee on results on the race track both driver and team are on the same page knowing that giving 150 percent will boast a package that cannot be broken.

“The NASCAR K&N Series is very competitive right now, probably one of the most competitive divisions in all of NASCAR,” added Spraker. “This team has shown that it can run up front and we believe in Clay’s ability to drive a race car. With that being said we know that if we stick to our game plan and give all we can that results will come.”

The Army Strong 150 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East at Bowman Gray (N.C.) Stadium is set for this Saturday, June 4 with a set liftoff at 8:00 p.m. The event will be tape-delayed on SPEED airing June 9 at 6:00 p.m.

Mike Bliss, Dexter Bean, Drew Brannon, Kerry Earnhardt, Joey Gase, Ron Hornaday Jr., P.J. Jones, Alex Kennedy, Brandon McReynolds, Steve Park, David Ragan, Scott Riggs, David Reutimann, Michelle Theriault, Darrell Waltrip and Smokey Yunick are just some of the drivers that Spraker, who also has starts for himself in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series (NKNPS), NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) and NASCAR Nationwide Series has been affiliated with in one capacity or another through SRE.

    – Start of a new era for Turner Motorsports… The 2011 season marks the start of a new era for Turner Motorsports.  The team has expanded in 2011 from a two-truck operation in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) to become the largest stand-alone multi-series team in NASCAR’s top-tier touring series, fielding three entries in the NCWTS and four entries in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS). Three of the team’s regular NNS drivers (Jason Leffler, Reed Sorenson and Justin Allgaier) have been pegged as viable contenders to win the 2011 NNS driver championship.

Mikey Kile on getting back behind the wheel at Chicagoland Speedway “I am excited to get back behind the wheel of the No. 30 Impala. I learned a lot in Nashville about the Nationwide cars and communicating with the team and I will be able to expand upon that this weekend. I’m proud to have our great new partners, Battery Tender and STP ® on the car this weekend and hopefully bring home a solid finish for them both.”

  • Kimmel Racing Prepares for Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 150

Cornelius, NC – There has never been a two-time winner for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards in the 11 years that the series has competed at Chicagoland Speedway. On Saturday, June 4th during the Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 150, Frank Kimmel will look to change that history. It’s been eight years since Frank Kimmel stood in Victory Lane at Chicagoland Speedway, but if his recent finishes are any indication of what is to come, then the future looks bright.

The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards returns to Chicagoland Speedway this Sunday for the Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 150. This mile-and-a -half concrete oval with wide sweeping turns has been one of Kimmel’s best tracks. He has an average finishing position of eighth and he has finished in fifth and fourth place the past two years, respectively.

Kimmel will be driving the Roush-Yates powered No. 44 Ansell-Menards Ford next weekend. He recently had a strong sixth-place finish on May 22nd at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Frank Kimmel will also try to make up ground in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards overall standings. He trails the current leader, Ty Dillon, by only 90 points.

Activities for Frank Kimmel begin with two Menards store location visits on Thursday, June 2, as the driver is set to sign autographs, pose for pictures, and even offer a special promotion to store customers. Kimmel will appear at the Crest Hills Menards store near I-55 – 17441 Weber Road – at 4:00 p.m. He will then visit the Joliet location off of Highway 7 – 2524 W. Jefferson Street – at 6:30 p.m. Each appearance will last 90 minutes. Store visitors can take advantage of a special promotion at either location, simply by purchasing a pair of Ansell gloves inside the store. Those purchasing Ansell gloves inside Menards will receive a voucher for a free second pair of gloves, personally handed over by Kimmel outside the store.

“We have fun at the Menards locations and fans get excited to take photos by the #44 Ansell-Menards Ford. I always encourage everyone to come and hang out with me while they’re doing some shopping at Menards,” said Frank.

Finally, on Saturday night, Kimmel looks to make history by becoming the first two-time winner in the Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 150 under the lights at Chicagoland Speedway. Frank Kimmel will try to change history by harnessing his skills of blue-collar work ethic, veteran experience, and unwavering tenacity.

“We put in a lot of hours over the off-season working on our mile and a half program, so I’m looking forward to seeing how our Ansell-Menards runs in that first practice session. We’re always in the hunt at Chicagoland and it would be nice to put the Ansell-Menards Ford back in victory lane for Messina Wildlife, Ansell and Menards,” concluded Frank Kimmel.

Watch for Frank Kimmel as he goes for his second win at Chicagoland Speedway driving the No. 44 Ansell-Menards Ford on June 4th for the Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 150 in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards. Also, be sure to visit a Menards location to purchase your next pair of Ansell Gloves. • Wheldon sent packing on Victory Tour

Waiting for the initial volley of early-morning TV and radio guest appearances, Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon reflected on the hectic race that transpired a few hundred feet from his victory podium perch at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

His milk- and champagne-soaked firesuit washed overnight for a photo shoot, Wheldon also put into perspective his place in the race’s history.

“For me, winning the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 is very special,” said Wheldon, 32, a resident of St. Petersburg, Fla. “I love this racetrack. I love this race and what it’s done for my career even before being a two-time winner. That is an emotion that didn’t come into it before, and because I’m more experienced I’m able to appreciate this more and you have more time to appreciate it.

“It’s certainly different from the last one. I remember I was out for most of the night with my sponsor, Jim Beam. Last night, I went to a driver party for about an hour and then I retired to bed. (Two-year-old son) Sebastian crawled into bed with us about 4 o’clock in the morning and kind of took over the bed.”

Wheldon, who started sixth in the No. 98 William Rast-Curb/Big Machine car for Bryan Herta Autosport with Curb/Agajanian, overtook the sliding, crippled car of rookie JR Hildebrand just before the start/finish line to become the 10th two-time champion of the race.

“They’re both obviously very good and it’s an amazing achievement by everybody,” Whedon continued as he was given the two-minute cue for “The Early Show” on CBS. “This one was definitely more emotional; there was a lot more going on. A lot of things have changed in my life since 2005.”

In the succeeding years, he exchanged marriage vows, has two young sons and is coping – along with his extended family – with his mother, Sue, having Alzheimer’s disease. He championed the Alzheimer Association’s message of early diagnosis and risk-factor education during the month.

“For me, there’s a lot going on back home with my family and it was certainly nice to win,” he said. “It was very emotional and different from the last one because of that but nevertheless very good. This also is potentially my only race of the season. It wasn’t one of the races with one of the big, powerhouse teams; it was with (former teammate and longtime friend) Bryan Herta. We didn’t do this deal because we were friends. We would have still been friends even if we hadn’t done this deal. We did it because we believed in one another and we believed that we could win.”

Soon after the media obligations at the Speedway, Wheldon went shopping for clothing for the multi-city Victory Tour that starts May 31 – among his appearances will be a visit to “Late Night with David Letterman” on June 6 — and a suit for the Victory Banquet later in the evening.

“I didn’t think I’d need one,” he said of the improbable victory.
