  • Chase Elliott captures the UNOH 200 pole at Bristol

Chase Elliott captures the UNOH 200 pole at Bristol

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie driver, Chase Elliott, paces the field in qualifying for the UNOH 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Elliot in just his fifth career truck series start became the youngest pole winner in the history of the series turning a lap of 125.183 mph around the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile”

Elliott, son of former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Bill Elliott, has scored four top-10 finishes in his first four starts. A very impressive record for a driver who is still young to compete on some of the series faster speedways.

Another second generation driver, Ryan Blaney, will start second turning a lap of 125.028 mph. The past few weeks for Blaney have been an emotional roller coaster after winning the Pocono Mountains 125 at Pocono Raceway, then crashing on lap 1.  A week later in the National Guard 200 at Michigan International Speedway. Blaney currently sits eighth in the series standings, 85 points out of first.

Driver of the No.3 Bass Pro Shops Chevy, Ty Dillon will take the green in third, with Timothy Peters and German Quiroga rounding out the top-5

The green flag will fall on the UNOH 200 at 7:30pm EST at Bristol Motor Speedway.

  • James Buescher wins Michigan National Guard 200

BROOKLYN, Mich. (August 17, 2013) – Defending NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion James Buescher executed a perfect pass of Kyle Busch in the closing laps to win the Michigan National Guard 200.

Overcoming a problem in the pits, Buescher sat third with four laps to go. With a perfectly timed pass, Buescher wheeled by both second place Brendan Gaughan and leader Kyle Busch in turn four. The defending champion then was able to pull away and take his first victory of the 2013 campaign.

Busch did not go quietly as stayed on Buescher’s back tailgate for the last three laps. But Buescher countered every Busch move.

For Buescher the risky move was a must, mentioning that the season has not gone according to plan. The victory brought him within one point of second place Jeb Burton and 52 points behind points leader Matt Crafton.

“It’s a good way to start that turnaround,” Buescher said. “It’s no secret that it’s not the season we’ve been expecting.”

Busch, Ty Dillon, Joey Logano and Miguel Paludo rounded out the top five. For Busch, it was his fourth second place finish during an NCWTS event at MIS. He has won on the two-mile oval in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and the Nationwide Series, but is still seeking his first win in the trucks.

Busch gave Buescher credit but was still unsure how the move worked.

“How the 31 (Buescher) could get a run on the 62 (Gaughan) who got a run on me is beyond me,” Busch said. “It blows my mind.”

Earlier in the day in NCWTS qualifying, Jeb Burton and Gaughan broke Joey Coulter’s track record of 184.101 mph. Burton ran an average speed of 185.759 MPH while Gaughan timed at 184.120 MPH.

Jimmie Johnson has continued to chase that elusive victory at MIS, one of only five tracks where the five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion has never won. Johnson was in control during the final NSCS practice Saturday but a mistake wiped away any momentum the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet driver had. Despite posting the fastest speed of final practice of 199.457 mph, Johnson crashed nose first during the session. Johnson, who qualified third, will now start from the back of the field in Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400.

Juan Pablo Montoya, Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch and Austin Dillon rounded out the top five. Dillon is in his first race as a substitute for injured Tony Stewart.

Joey Logano, the pole sitter for Sunday’s race, ran 22nd in final practice. Logano set a track record qualifying lap at 203.949 mph.

Austin Dillon won the Inaugural Mudsummer Classic for his fifth victory in 53 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races. Kyle Larson, Ryan Newman, Joey Coulter and Brendan Gaughan rounded out the top five.

“It’s amazing,” Dillon said in victory lane. “I love this dirt racing. It’s so much fun. I want to thank Tony Stewart and NASCAR for coming here and my grandpa and American Ethenol for the opportunity. This is real racing right here – that’s all I have to say. Thanks to everybody back at RCR and ECR Engines.”

    Heat Races:

Kenny Schrader led the field to the first heat and led all 8 laps for the victory. He will start in the pole in the feature race. Jared Landers started on the pole in the second heat and was getting a ton of pressure from Darrell Wallace Jr. Wallace Jr tried to get the middle to work but could not and spun with 3 laps to go and the caution came out. The green came back out and Matt Crafton went to the very bottom of the track and battled Landers for the win in the heat. Landers got him with a lap to go and took the win. Timothy Peters led the field to the green flag on heat 3 and pulled away from the field to win the heat. Larson beat Jason Bowles for the spot to be locked in for the feature in a great back and forth battle. The 4th heat was won by Kenny “Herminator” Wallace when he led the field to the green and was in the top spot for all 8 laps. The 5th and final heat race was won by Jeb Burton with  Newman finishing second and clinching his spot in the feature. There was a last chance race where 10 drivers completed and only 5 of them made the feature race. Before the green flag, The truck did a 4 wide salute like the sprint cars and other do at dirt tracks.

    Main Feature

Schrader led the 30 trucks to the green flag at the PACKED Eldora speedway. Peters, who had barely any experience with dirt at all, was battling with Dave Blaney and Schrader for the lead on lap 13 but could not get it done. He used a slide job on Schrader on lap 14 and took the lead while Schrader fell to 3rd. Larson got to 13th to 5th in about 20 laps and took the lead on lap 38 and never looked back. He lapped 10 cars until the first segment ended or else he would have lapped the whole field!

Larson led the field to segment 2 and they were 4 wide behind him! Larson pulled away from the field but got caught up to lap traffic and Dillon caught up to him. He got caught up with the #77 and Dillon got past him. Larson said not so fast my friend and tried to get the lead back but the caution waved for debris on lap 92. They went back to green on lap 97 and Newman went three wide to take 2nd. Larson was gaining on him and over took the #34 truck on lap 102. Larson was about to take the lead over Dillon but the caution came out for the end of the second segment.

We went back to green with 40 laps to go in segment 3. Dillon led easily to the green flag while Blaney and Larson battled Blaney for second but then the caution came out for the #6 of Landers getting together with the #3 of Ty Dillon and the #98 of Johnny Sauter.

We went back to racing with 5 laps to go but that did not last long as the caution waved with 2 to go for debris coming from the truck of Larson. They tried it again and Dillon pulled away while Larson barely got passed Newman for second.

Matt Crafton leads the point standings by 48 points over Jeb Burton.

  • Ken Schrader wins pole for Mid Summer Classic at Eldora

Ken Schrader wins pole for Mid Summer Classic at Eldora

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is going back to it’s roots by returning to the dirt on a Wednesday night. Though NASCAR history was also made when Ken Schrader scored the pole for the Mid Summer Classic, becoming the oldest NASCAR pole sitter at the age of 58.

Dirt racer Jared Landers qualified second in his first truck start, followed by Timothy Peters, Kenny Wallace and Jeb Burton.

Usually NASCAR would line the trucks up for the main event based on the qualifying results. However, things were changed. NASCAR went with a dirt track format with five heat races that took three locked in drivers and one non-locked in driver per race, followed by a last chance qualifier that took the top five.

As a result, Ken Schrader would start on pole in the first heat and led all eight laps to take the victory. He’ll start pole come tonight’s A-Main.

Jared Landers would start on pole in the second heat and lead seven of the eight laps after being challenged by series regulars Darrell Wallace Jr. and Matt Crafton. Darrell Wallace Jr. pressured Landers for the lead, though spun with three laps to go; Wallace Jr. would get back to fourth. After the restart for Wallace’s spin, it was Crafton was pressuring Landers and using the very bottom of the track, however he would come up short and finish second.

Timothy Peters would lead all the laps in the third heat.

In the fourth heat, Kenny Wallace led the field to green and like those before, led all of the laps.

The last chance qualifier saw Brennan Newberry pick up the win. However, behind Newberry, the excitement was on in a battle for fifth between Norm Benning, Jimmy Weller III and Clay Greenfield. The three of them bumped and banged for the second half of the event with Benning bouncing off the wall coming to the line grabbing the final spot.

“I’ve been looking forward to this race since the day they announced it!” Benning said.

Known as the underdog story, Benning is a series regular, however is not known for running upfront as he typically runs near the back of the pack with his unsponsored No. 57 truck.

  • Ty Dillon passes Kyle Busch late to win UNOH 225 at Kentucky Speedway

Ty Dillon passes Kyle Busch late to win UNOH 225 at Kentucky Speedway

“This could be the start of something good…” Ty Dillon said on the radio as he crossed the finish line.

With 26 laps to go, Ty Dillon would pass Kyle Busch to take the lead and never looked back, taking the victory in the UNOH 225 at Kentucky Speedway.

“First things first, I got to thank the Lord,” the driver of the No. 3 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet said in victory lane. “I was praying on the last restart. Got to thank him first. This couldn’t be a better day. So proud of Marcus Richmond and all of these guys.”

It marks second victory of Dillon’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series career, the first of this season.

“We got a strong team,” the 21-year-old added. “We won’t give up. We’re going to put our superman cape from here on out.”

After battling hard with a really loose truck mid-race, Brad Keselowski would come back to finish second.

Busch would finish third after struggling with a loose truck late in the race.

“I was loose before the stop,” he commented. “We tried to tighten it up but it was loose. It seemed like clock work in the test – 9 o’ clock comes and it gets loose. Can’t believe we messed it up that bad.”

James Buescher would finish fourth while Ryan Blaney had to settle for fifth.

With 32 laps to go, Blaney was side-by-side with Busch for the lead, though would make contact with the outside wall.

“I was really excited about the run we were having – everybody did a good job at getting this truck better as the race went on,” he said. “I was running the bottom really good and I knew it was only a matter of time before I caught Busch. I went to the outside, he got loose, got up into me and put me in the wall. It just damaged the outside of the truck too much.”

“I got out of the throttle, turned it all the way to the left, but it kept taking the air off my spoiler and sliding up,” Busch commented on the contact.

Timothy Peters would finish sixth, followed by Miguel Paludo, German Quiroga, Jeb Burton and Matt Crafton. Crafton leads the points, still, 22 points ahead of Burton.

Joey Coulter was battling for eighth on the last lap when his truck got loose, causing him to make contact with the outside wall. As a result, Coulter finished 16th.

Darrell Wallace Jr. dominated the first half of the race, though would get loose on lap 86 while underneath Blaney and spin around, making contact with the outside wall.

“Just came around,” he said. “Just barely had room there. I mean, I’m not pissed off of Ryan. We’re good friends. Just frustrated. Haven’t been able to figure out these trucks yet. It seems everytime I get behind someone, I get really loose.”

  • Jeb Burton scores first career victory in WinStar World Casino 400

Jeb Burton scores first career victory in WinStar World Casino 400

After taking the lead on a restart with 24 laps to go, Jeb Burton would hold on to lead the final laps and beat Ty Dillon to the line to win the WinStar World Casino 400 at Texas Motor Speedway. It’s the marks the victory of the 20-year-olds career.

“It’s freaking awesome,” he said in victory lane. “I’m just a little old country boy from South Boston living a dream. Just have an awesome team behind me. These guys right here, damn, that’s the best team I have ever had the privilege to drive for.”

Burton has been strong so far this season, though has come up short each weekend – till now.

“It’s huge,” Burton continued. “I’ve been telling everybody that once we get one, they’re going to start stacking up. I’m ready for Kentucky in a couple weeks. It’s been a lot of blood and tears to get here so it means a lot.”

Burton is the son of 2002 Daytona 500 winner Ward Burton, who said this is the biggest day he has ever experienced in racing.

“We got so many people to think,” Ward Burton said. “Can’t say enough about them all. Steve Turner and Harry Scott – they’re providing awesome resources for my son. Mike Hilman Jr. is guiding him, helping him. The Burton family is really lucky.”

Ward Burton was up on the spotter stand for the race and noted that he wished he had a parachute to get to victory lane quicker.

For crew chief Mile Hilman Jr., it marks his first win with Turner-Scott Motorsports and first win with a driver other than Todd Bodine. Hilman Jr. scored his 19 previous wins with Bodine.

“Everybody works hard at Turner-Scott Motorsports day in and day out,” Hilman Jr. said. “It’s nice to get them back to victory lane where they belong.”

Ty Dillon would lead much of the race at Texas, though fell up short as he finished second.

“One more lap, one more turn is all I needed,” Dillon said afterwards. “We shouldn’t had that at the end. We were the dominant truck and should have had it. We’re going to win a lot of races this year. I wanted to win this race at Texas – I’m a little heartbroken.

“I just didn’t have the help on the restart. Crafton was shoving the 4 (Burton) on the restart and they just went by on the backstretch.”

NASCAR Mexico Series Champion German Quiroga would score his best career truck finish with a third.

“I want to thank the whole team, Red Horse Racing,” Quiroga said. “The truck was great. I knew we were fast. We just need to work on pit tragedy; I just need to get better. I’m very proud of the team and everybody in the shop.”

Running up front, Quiroga noted that he earned respect and had fun racing Crafton in the final laps.

“He was giving me room,” Quiroga noted. “I want to thank him for that. it was good for us. They had a lot of respect and I appreciate that.”

Crafton would finish fourth to keep the points lead, now 23 points ahead of Burton.

“We just missed it a little bit,” Crafton commented. “We just didn’t have the speed on the short run – we were just decent. But man those guys would just drive away on the restart. We finished top five. Definitely not what we wanted, disappointed a little bit with it.”

Brendan Gaughan would round out the top five in fifth after leading the middle portion of the event.

“The track freed up too much in the end and we just didn’t adjust enough to it,” Gaughan noted. “I got behind our teammate, trying to give him a push and lost the nose and Buescher got a run there and took advantage.”

Darrell Wallace Jr. finished sixth, followed by pole sitter Johnny Sauter, Ryan Blaney, James Buescher and Miguel Paludo.

Besides Wallace’s top 10 finish, the Kyle Busch Motorsports truck would find trouble in Texas.

Making his first start for KBM, ARCA standout Chad Hackenbracht would wreck on the backstretch on lap 42 after getting loose while trying to split Jennifer Jo Cobb and Ty Dillon.

“Not what I wanted,” Hackenbracht tweeted. “The @KBMteam guys worked way too hard for that. Waited too late to get around the lapper.”

Then 12 laps later, his teammate Joey Coulter would spin in the corner and back the truck into the wall.

“I was doing good, pointed in the right direction and then suddenly pointed in the wrong direction,” Coulter said. “Can’t tell whether a shock or not. It just happened so quick. I heard something break and it just came around and that was it.

“I hate it for these 18 guys. We had a really good truck and thought we could work our way through there. We’ll get it back together and go and get some points and win the championship at the end of the year.”

There would only be three cautions during the event with the third caution coming on lap 138 when Brad Keselowski Racing driver Ross Chastain got into the wall.

The trucks will have most of the month off before heading to Kentucky Speedway on June 27th.
